Prior Oscar cred: One statuette, for best supporting Actor in Syriana (2005), and four other nominations. Three ways in which Clooney’s Descendants character descends from previous Alexander Payne protagonists: (1) he’s a cuckold who confronts the “other man” (like Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt); (2) he has issues with a headstrong teenage girl (like Matthew Broderick in Election); (3) he dresses hideously (like all of the above as well as Paul Giamatti in Sideways). Degrees of separation from this year’s honorary Oscar recipient James Earl Jones: Three—Clooney’s aunt was Rosemary Clooney, who was married to José Ferrer, who co-starred with Jones in Blood Tide (1982).
