GEORGE CLOONEY: «HOLLYWOOD PERDONA, LA POLITICA NO»

Al cinema interpreta il ruolo di candidato perfetto (almeno in apparenza). Dal vivo è ancora meglio (ha persino rassicurato la nostra cronista emozionata). Eppure George Clooney alla politica proprio non ci pensa: «Compromessi e scandali non fanno per me. Preferisco vivere».
Cappello di lana calato su occhi, naso e orecchie. Niente trucco. Giacca in piuma d’oca che mi fa sembrare l’omino della Michelin. Stivali di pelo a metà polpaccio e guanti a prova di gelo che sarebbero piaciuti a Reinhold Messner. Voi direte: «Ma ti sei conciata così per incontrare George Clooney?».
Già... Faceva molto freddo quella sera a Londra, ma non potevo perdere George, in città per presentare la sua ultima regia al London Film Festival. L’appuntamento è alle 18, a Leicester Square, davanti al Cinema Odeon. Io arrivo con un po’ di anticipo: tre ore.
Lo aspetto sul red carpet. Eccolo, arriva. Percorre la piazza accolto dal delirio delle fan stipate dietro le transenne («George! George!») e viene finalmente verso di me, bellissimo. D’un tratto mi dimentico le domande che dovrei fargli e quando si mette davanti a me, con quel sorriso mascellar-volitivo di simpatia travolgente e quel suo sguardo tutto occhioni neri e buoni con sopracciglioni folti e ammiccanti, mi cade il registratore dalle mani.
Ho la fronte imperlata di sudore, il volto paonazzo, la voce incrinata dalla disperazione, ma riesco ugualmente a formulare la domanda: «Guardando il suo film, Le idi di marzo, sembrerebbe proprio che, di questi tempi, non ci possiamo fidare di nessun politico. Che mondo infame, no?». Lui si china, raccoglie il registratore, me lo porge e dice: «Come, scusi, può ripetere?».
Il mio sorriso già pietrificato per l’imbarazzo si trasforma quasi in una paresi, ma George, accarezzandomi teneramente il braccio, mi incoraggia: «Non si preoccupi, mi rifaccia la domanda».
Eh sì, è andata così. L’emozione gioca brutti scherzi. Da quella sera porto in giro il mio braccio sinistro come una reliquia e lo faccio toccare alle amiche. Quando mi chiedono: «Ma com’è George?», dico loro che è una meraviglia d’uomo. Però la verità è che, da vicino, non è come te lo aspetti: è più basso e più magro, minuto, quasi piccolo.
Sotto il vestito niente muscoli. Non è certo il prototipo dei sogni proibiti femminili. Quel che ti fa davvero innamorare di lui, probabilmente, è la sua capacità di stare al mondo, la sua comunicatività e l’assoluta empatia del suo sguardo. È un uomo che sa ridere di sé e che non se la tira da divinità sexy o da grande attore.
Pur essendo, ben inteso, entrambe le cose. E molto di più. Per esempio, un vero regista e un abile selezionatore di attori: Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood e Paul Giamatti, i protagonisti di Le idi di marzo (nelle sale dal 16 dicembre), presentato anche al Festival del cinema di Venezia, sono bravissimi.
Dopo Confessioni di una mente pericolosa, Good Night, and Good Luck, In amore niente regole, Clooney ha scelto un thriller politico sulla corruzione. Niente scene mozzafiato né toni sopra le righe, in un lungometraggio dove spicca l’interpretazione di Ryan Gosling nei panni di Stephen Meyers, giovane in carriera, mente della campagna elettorale del governatore democratico in corsa per la nomination presidenziale. Naturalmente, il super-candidato altri non poteva essere che Clooney stesso.
Perché ha voluto dirigere e interpretare un film sulla corruzione politica, per di più all’interno del Partito democratico, che lei ha sostenuto in passato?
«Mi piace fare film che pongano delle domande, senza necessariamente dare delle risposte. Sono cresciuto negli anni in cui in America succedevano cose straordinarie: la lotta per i diritti civili, per l’emancipazione e l’uguaglianza delle donne, i movimenti contro la guerra nel Vietnam, la cultura alternativa e, sì, anche quella della droga. Negli Anni 60 e 70 Hollywood rifletteva nei suoi film quello che stava accadendo nel Paese. Io provo a fare lo stesso».
Quindi, quali domande dovremmo porci?
«Ne vale la pena? Se il candidato in corsa migliora la sua posizione, ma danneggia quella di qualcun altro, dovremmo credere in lui ugualmente? Se sappiamo che è l’uomo giusto e che la sua elezione porterà conseguenze positive nel Paese, possiamo accettare di modificare la verità - anche solo un po’ - per difenderlo da uno scandalo? È un uomo per cui vale la pena di correre tutti questi rischi? Non sono domande retoriche, guardate che la risposta potrebbe anche essere “sì”. Questo è il tema di Le idi di marzo».
Quanto è attuale il tema della moralità?
«Gli scambi di favori, gli accordi e i compromessi tra politici sono all’ordine del giorno quando si tratta di conquistarsi un posto nel governo. E gli scandali non sono rari in politica. Avevamo appena finito la sceneggiatura, che sono scoppiati i casi di John Edwards (ex senatore democratico che ha usato i fondi della campagna elettorale per coprire la sua scappatella extraconiugale, ndr) e Anthony Weiner (deputato democratico, sposato, che spediva foto “hot” a una studentessa di college, ndr).
Si dice che il suo film sarebbe dovuto uscire tre anni fa, ma avete rimandato per non rovinare il clima di ottimismo che si era creato per l’elezione di Barack Obama. Oggi questo spirito è cambiato?
«Abbiamo solo avuto bisogno di molto tempo per realizzare le riprese. Tuttavia, è vero che la speranza portata dall’elezione di Barack Obama è stata in parte soffocata. In questo momento l’America sta facendo qualche passo avanti e qualche altro indietro, ma arriveremo alla meta. Sono ottimista e ho molta fiducia nella capacità di funzionamento del sistema americano».
Anche lei, come certi uomini politici, ha degli scheletri nell’armadio?
«E chi non ne ha? Il punto è essere leali. La lealtà è la qualità che più ammiro nelle persone. Ai politici direi: ormai ci sono così tanti tipi di media e ci sono numerosissimi modi per trovare informazioni, che i candidati dovrebbero ammettere fin dal primo giorno: “Sì, ho fatto questo, ho fatto quest’altro”. Altrimenti, se continuiamo così, non ci resteranno più politici. Insomma, chi non ha mai fumato uno spinello nella sua vita? Chi non si è mai ubriacato o non ha fatto qualcosa di imbarazzante? Prima che i media scoprano lo scandalo - o che ne inventino uno - ammettete subito le vostre debolezze».
Ha fatto delle ricerche sul campo per realizzare il film?
«Abbiamo lavorato su un documentario intitolato The Last Party, una satira su entrambi gli schieramenti, repubblicano e Democratico, e soprattutto sul meraviglioso Primary, un docu-film sulle primarie tra John Kennedy e Hubert Humphrey. Era il 1960, ma la politica non è cambiata molto da allora».
Quanto, invece, è stato influenzato dall’esperienza di suo padre che, nel 2004, ha corso per i Democratici in Kentucky?
«Ci sono alcune scene che hanno a che fare con i discorsi che facevo con mio padre quando discutevamo della sua candidatura al Congresso. È stato allora che ho visto quante mani devi stringere per ottenere i fondi necessari alla tua campagna elettorale. Per finanziare una candidatura in un piccolo distretto del Kentucky ci vogliono almeno un paio di milioni di dollari. E, se non sei ricco di tuo, devi accettare anche l’aiuto di gente che non ti piace».
Vince chi ha più soldi, le sembra giusto?
«No, ma il denaro fa ancora la differenza. Le cose stanno cambiando, però: ci sono movimenti nuovi come Occupy Wall Street o i Tea Party. Presto la gente incomincerà a eleggere i presidenti non per i soldi che hanno, ma per quello che sono».
Che differenza c’è tra il mondo politico e Hollywood?
«A Los Angeles il tuo lavoro parla per te. Certo, ci sono colleghi a cui vorresti tagliare la testa, ma la maggior parte degli attori e dei registi sono gentili tra loro. Sanno che sono lì non solo per il loro talento, ma anche per una moltitudine di felici coincidenze. Siamo dei privilegiati. Nell’industria del cinema c’è una certa generosità che non vedo nella politica. Hollywood perdona di più: non si aspetta che i suoi attori siano dei santi».

Pensa che si candiderà come suo padre, prima o poi?
«No grazie. Sono cresciuto con una coscienza sociale e politica molto profonda, sono sempre coinvolto: ora, per esempio, mi sto dedicando alla causa del Darfur. Ho una vita bella e molto più comoda di quella che fanno i politici. E poi loro sono più intelligenti di me. Li ammiro».
Lei è stato il protagonista assoluto del London Film Festival quest’anno, oltre a “Le idi di Marzo” ha portato “The Descendants”, di Alexander Payne. Che tipo di esperienza è stata per lei lavorare in un film indipendente?
«Quando passi i 50 anni, rischi di accettare ruoli che non ti corrispondono. Spero che a me non accada mai e di accettare sempre la miglior sceneggiatura disponibile: Alexander mi ha dato questa opportunità. The Descendants inizia con la morte della moglie del protagonista e finisce con la sua presa di coscienza: è un film struggente e divertente allo stesso tempo».
Può anticiparci qualcosa sul suo prossimo film, “Gravity”?
«Non voglio rovinarle la sorpresa, ma muoiono tutti... È un ottimo film di fantascienza: Sandra Bullock e io ci perdiamo nello spazio».
Altri progetti?
«Adesso voglio riposare e farmi un po’ i fatti miei».
Con la sua nuova fiamma Stacy Keibler?
