DO not judge a book by its cover, it is often said, but unfortunately our perception of people is often made on their physical appearance. Facial expressions can communicate a person’s emotions and impact their approachability and popularity factor.

One of the clearest signs of a happy, friendly person is one who is smiling and, as we all know, a person who is nice to be around is always popular. A sourpuss is not going to win any fans.

A person who is uncomfortable about how his or her teeth looks is unlikely to be smiling because of lack of confidence, and will make other people uneasy.

This is why in customer service and hospitality careers, a friendly smile is important.

“You have less than a few seconds to make a good first impression on those you come into contact with. Teeth are one of the first things a person sees when they look at you. How your teeth look can make or break a sale or you. Your perceived level of attractiveness by other people will be a significant benefit or detriment in your career and your life. It isn’t fair, but it is true,” said Wendy Lee, professional image consultant, Chapter One Asia Sdn Bhd.

Bad teeth can make or break a career. This is especially true in professions that require face-to-face interaction with customers — sales and customer service especially, or the acting or modelling industries where looking good is imperative, she said.

“Study after study reveals that how you look is critical to someone’s first impression of you. You can’t change everything about your physical appearance but you can definitely make changes that will give you a booster shot.

“Your teeth will tell a tale. If your teeth are yellow and look like you just ate, your face value will be greatly reduced. You need to do everything you can to keep your teeth pearly white and you will be perceived to be more attractive.”

People constantly in the public eye such as actors, models, celebrities and public figures also need to have good teeth and it’s a fact that many celebrities have had dental makeovers to improve their looks. Examples are American actor George Clooney, and English singer Noel Gallagher.

Clooney had porcelain veneers and crowns to improve his smile, while Gallagher had teeth whitening and dental surgery to improve their smiles.

Britain’s Prince Harry and American singer Gwen Stefani, on the other hand, opted for braces to straighten their teeth and to improve their smiles.
Why is it so important for public figures such as these to have that perfect set of teeth?

“Research studies tell us that the exposure principle increases our face value.

Specifically, the exposure principle says that the more often you are seen by someone, the more attractive and intelligent you appear to them. For celebrities and public figures where they are being watched at all times, it is even more critical to look as good as they possibly can on every given day. And having a good set of teeth is a major part of positive image management,” said Lee.

Not that he needed alot of help in being more attractive, Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney , who is rated a “10″ by most women, had a smile makeover in the past year that makes him look more energetic and more youthful.

Worn, shorter and yellow teeth shown in the photos below gave George ( a.k.a. Dr. Doug Ross) a more aged appearance. Without a doubt his improved smile is a great accessory to his image.

Usually when a smile ages like this, it is a sign of bite imbalances and/or the effects of grinding. Looks like George got some excellent help rebuilding the edges of lost enamel with porcelain veneers or crowns, possibly some laser care for his gums, and hopefully treating the cause first with some bite therapy.

Certainly ER becomes more important with Dr. Doug on the show tonight–giving all of us (especially George Clooney) plenty of more reasons to smile.

I know many "average" people who spend enormous amounts of money to whiten, straighten, cap, veneer their teeth. They do it for many reasons, to regain their bite, to regain their self-confidence, to look better when they smile. I hope that no one is equating this to plastic surgery done just for vanity's sake.
