With the listing of threads there are 2 columns of numbers. Could you please tell me what they denote?

As it says at the top of the columns (if you mouse over it), one column is for the number of posts in the thread and the other is for the number of people who've read the thread.

These are different numbers because of course not everyone who reads a thread will post in it.

Just in case anyone's interested, I believe that if you look at someone's profile, you can see how many + (positive markss) or - (negative marks) they've given to other posters as well as how many they've received.
