Amy Winehouse - Dies at age 27 Empty Amy Winehouse - Dies at age 27

Post by Guest Sat 23 Jul 2011, 21:27

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14262237

Singer Amy Winehouse, 27, has been found dead at her north London home.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that a 27-year-old woman had died in Camden and that the cause of death was as yet unexplained.

The Brit and Grammy award-winner had struggled with drink and drug addiction and had recently spent time in rehab.

Her record label Universal called her "a gifted musician, artist and performer", adding: "Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans."

She pulled out of a comeback tour last month after a disastrous appearance at her first gig.
Jeered at gig

Winehouse cancelled the European tour after being jeered at the show in Serbia, when she appeared too drunk to perform.

For 90 minutes, she mumbled through parts of songs and at times left the stage - leaving her band to fill in.

BBC News in Camden

Dozens of bouquets and candles have been left on the railings at the end of the road where Amy Winehouse lived.

Around 70 people, many of them under the age of 18, have gathered here at Camden Square, the place where neighbours say the singer had recently bought a home.

Most people here say they are fans of the singer who - despite a troubled personal life - was admired for the talent that shot her to fame. At least four people have claimed to be friends of the Winehouse family. All have appeared deeply distressed, asking officers for information.

Eyewitnesses say two ambulances arrived at the address just after 1600 BST and that police cars arrived shortly afterwards. Well over a dozen police officers are now quietly standing guard outside her home.

A car arrived earlier with four or five people who were visibly upset. The indication was that they seemed to know the singer as they were actually allowed through into the road.

A statement by the Metropolitan Police is expected shortly.

She had recently finished a course of alcohol rehabilitation in London and at the time was under strict instructions not to drink.

A section of the road where the singer lived was cordoned off on Saturday evening, as journalists, local residents and fans gathered at the police tapes.

Forensic officers were seen going in and out of the building.

Winehouse had won widespread acclaim with her 2003 debut album, Frank.

But it was 2006's Back to Black which brought her worldwide stardom, winning five Grammy Awards.

The record's producer Mark Ronson said in a statement: "She was my musical soulmate and like a sister to me.

"This is one of the saddest days of my life."

Hip-hop producer Salaam Remi, who also worked on Winehouse's albums Frank and Back To Black, paid tribute to her on Twitter saying: "Very Very Sad Day. Just lost a Great Friend and a Sister."

He added: "RIP my baby SiS Cherry Winehouse. Love ya always."

News of her death has also prompted other tributes from other celebrity friends.

TV presenter Kelly Osbourne tweeted: "i cant even breath right now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!"

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood announced he is to dedicate his Saturday night show on Absolute Radio to Winehouse. He said: "It's a very sad loss of a very good friend I spent many great times with".

Crowds gathered near Amy Winehouse's home in north London

He added a reunion performance by his former group The Faces in Hurtwood, Surrey, would also be dedicated to the singer.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton wrote: "Can not believe the news. Amy was a special girl. The saddest news."

Daily Telegraph rock critic Neil McCormick said he was "utterly shocked" at her death.
Last appearance

He said she had appeared focused when giving an "incredible performance" for a recent studio recording of a duet with Tony Bennett.

"It's deeply sad. It's the most completely tragic waste of talent that I can remember," he added.

Doug Charles-Ridler, co-owner of Winehouse's favourite Camden pub The Hawley Arms, called her "a special person with a good soul," adding, "this should not have happened".

Winehouse made her last public appearance on Wednesday night when she joined her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield on stage at The Roundhouse in Camden.

The singer danced with Bromfield and encouraged the audience to buy her album in the impromptu appearance before leaving the stage.

At the time she pulled out of the tour, her spokesman had said everyone wanted to do everything to "help her return to her best".

Extremely sad - a very talented young woman who got sucked in to drink and drugs, her album Back to Black is and will always be one of my favs Sad [i]

It almost seems as if she didn't want to recuperate (as if she had a death wish). I was never a fan of hers but it's so sad to see someone go like that such a early age.

She couldn't control or give up her addictions, it's so sad when people can't live without drugs, or live for the high! Too young, too talented what a waste, just like so many others before her.

TV news is reporting about other stars who've died during their 27th year because of drug abuse. Jimmy Hendricks, Curt Cobain, Janice Joplin. 27 seems to be a bad age for stars.

When I first heard one of Amy's songs I was floored at the style of it. The curse words were also so novel from a female singer whose style sounded to me like some one from a girl group from the sixties.

I got her CD and was amazed at her talent.

So very sad that she was unable to control whatever demons came out from her drug use and abuse.

My prayers to her family.

Yes it is sad but expected. Surprising she lasted so long. Amy has left 2 albums and she will always be remembered sadly not all of it will be good. Thoughts are with her family and friends who tried to help her but couldn't simply because she really wasn't ready.

http://astrodynamics.net/blog/2009/05/25/the-27-club-and-the-progressed-lunar-return/

Here's an article on the 27th year Lunar Progression. Yeah, it's an astrology article, but basically according to most astrologers, most people don't really mature or basically grow-up till their late 20's, and interestingly enough brain research shows that the human brain, especially the frontal cortex that manages consequences and logic isn't fully developed till 25. There's one catch though, if you drink or do drugs as a teen or in your 20's, it actually delays the development of this part of the brain, which I think explains both Britney and Lilo.

@anon4, that's a fact, something I had to except as a parent, my son kept getting into trouble which led to therapy, probation, classes we took together and apart, anyway it was one of the first things I was taught. Took me a while to except it, there were times I just wanted to say what the hell are you thinking with! He's 21 now and has finally started thinking before acting, but it took awhile.

Lucy, yes, that is a fact. When my son was a teenager he was always in trouble. If there was trouble he was right there. To avoid drunk driving charges he went into the Navy, stationed in San Diego he met a girl, got married, got into booze and drugs, left her, drove back to NJ (several times), eventually stayed here. When he was in his 20's he straightened out, went to college, got his Masters degree from NJIT. It was a long haul for him growing up, but it happens.

I thought about sharing this article with you.

Amy Winehouse and the Pain of Addiction
By Maia Szalavitz Sunday, July 24, 2011

Another addiction death comes at age 27, with Amy Winehouse joining Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and most aptly, Janis Joplin among the rock icons who died from their disorder at the same point in their young lives. And sadly, her passing also presents another occasion for well-intentioned people who misunderstand addiction to push counterproductive solutions.
Janis Joplin once said that she made love to 25,000 people at her concerts, but went home alone. It's that yearning for love and acceptance, that aching but unanswered need for connection that underlies both the drive for fame and the pain of addiction, which may be why the two are so often found together.

The pain that infused Winehouse's voice seemed inextricable from her talent and was one thing that allowed her to move so many so profoundly. In counterpoint, her joyous sounds seemed that much more uplifting. It's that deep and complex mix of feelings that helped her fans connect to her even as she herself never benefited from that connection. That paradox is at the heart of the addiction.

(PHOTOS: The Life and Times of Amy Winehouse)

Here's why: a key pillar of addiction is often self-hatred and an inability to see oneself as worthy of love. In songs like “You Know I'm No Good,” and “Back to Black,” Winehouse made those feelings painfully plain. If you're an addict, that belief has probably always been with you. You may make a desperate attempts to pile up evidence otherwise—Look at my million-selling songs! My stadiums full of adoring fans! My husband who tolerates whatever I dish out! But it can't possibly be enough. You know that if they really knew you, they'd hate you.

For obvious reasons, this makes relationships almost impossible. The stress of being unable to take in love and social support feels unbearable and can warp the personality. Indeed, research suggests this may be one of the worst forms of stress we can experience, since our emotional systems are designed to be buffered by social contact and cannot balance themselves without it.

Is it any wonder then that drugs seem like the answer? Physiologically, alcohol and opioids like heroin replicate the chemistry of relational connection, with opioids acting directly on the brain's bonding systems and alcohol having a more indirect effect. The relief and comfort that children get in their parents' arms is mediated by the body's natural opioids; this same attachment system later creates the bonds between lovers and friends.

Cocaine and stimulants like methamphetamine, in contrast, produce a sense of power, motivation and worthiness. Put them together, as Winehouse seems to have done and as I did during my own period of addiction, and you get moments of intense euphoria and satisfaction interspersed with simple stress relief and the ability to comfortably tolerate being in your own skin.

(MORE: An Addict's Battle With Painkiller Addiction Reveals Outdated Rehab Tactics)

That is, of course, when you can get the drugs, get enough of them and they work, before chasing tolerance, legal hassles or other circumstances interfere. Contrary to popular belief, however, it's not the euphoria that hooks you. Instead, it's the ability simply to feel OK, the silencing of that voice of self-hate and the small sense of adequacy that comes in those quiet moments.

Only if an alternative method of reaching that state can be achieved is recovery possible. For me, that came in learning that my belief in my own unlovability was a delusion and that my pain could be reduced by sharing it. Unfortunately, you can't forcibly teach this. Even if Winehouse hadn't said “no, no, no” to many rehabs, no therapy would be able to reach her if she couldn't first come to believe that her intolerable pain could end without self-medication.

And that's why rehabs that use coercive tactics are often so counter-productive and why trying to force abstinence can backfire. We know that the British system of addiction care offers more access to “harm reduction” programs that don't require abstinence — but we don't know whether Winehouse was offered this approach, what the circumstances of her death were and whether anything could have prevented it.

Over the next few weeks, I'll continue to cover policies and practices that might reduce overdose deaths, and they do exist. One thing, however, is certain. Blaming drugs or Winehouse's “enablers” for her death misses the point: what she needed was compassion, most of all from herself.

Thanks for sharing LL, have had some experience with addiction, and the sad thing for the loved ones of the addict is it has nothing to do with how much you love someone, you have to want to stop, change for yourself. People are always saying if you love-ed me you would give up this addiction, IMO that isn't true, you can love family, friends, and your addictions.

Thanks LL for a fine iterpretation of addiction.

This could also go on a smaller scale, like drinking and smoking. I've been trying to kick the smoking habit for ages. I found it's easier to give up drinking than smoking.

@Cindi, you're welcome. I found her article at time magazine very helpful and made me understand from another point of view.
@Lucy: Thanks for your input! I never had to experience it, but I believe it might be really really difficult to deal with it, it affects everyone surrounded the person with the addiction.

I've been addicted to smoking it will be 2 yrs. in Sept. since I last smoked. This was the 4th time I quit, first 3 times I was pregnant great motivation to quit, the 4th time I had been smoking for 16 years when I became very ill and couldn't breath(COPD) another great motivator. Still it was tough to kick the addiction, drinking and smoking go well together IMO you can't drink if you are trying to stop smoking.
