A bid by the family of a South Sudanese general to lift a police-imposed freezing order on their $1.5 million Melbourne home has been rejected by the County Court.
Australian Federal Police allege General James Hoth Mai was involved in money laundering to pay for a luxury home in Narre Warren and European cars for his children.
The police interest in his movement of money was sparked by a 2016 report on the siphoning of assets from South Sudan co-authored by Hollywood star George Clooney.

Actor George Clooney's organisation The Sentry was critical in uncovering the alleged hiding of assets by General Mai.
At a hearing last month it emerged that General Mai’s family had allegedly claimed $470,000 in welfare benefits from the Australian Government at the same time as they paid for their Melbourne house with a $1.5 million cheque.
General Mai's family resorted to legal action to get a police order freezing their assets lifted so he could put the property up for sale for $1.9 million.

The family's lawyers claimed police did not have reasonable grounds for suspecting anyone had committed a serious offence.
But Judge Robert Dyer on Monday dismissed their application, saying it “lacks significant factual basis upon which it could succeed”.
General Mai did not swear an affidavit or give evidence in his case. Nor did other members of his family.

COURTS
Mr Clooney is a co-founder on The Sentry, a non government organisation which investigated the financial interests of senior military figures in South Sudan.
The AFP believes the Melbourne assets accumulated by General Mai's family were likely purchased with the proceeds of corruption from his time as the chief of staff of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army between 2009 and 2014.
General Mai's wife and two adult children have not declared any income since 2009. But Centrelink records show the trio have received more than $470,000 in welfare benefits since 2006 and lived in commission housing for years until the $1.5 million purchase of the Narre Warren house in 2014.
General Mai's son was 22 years old and had no job at the time he paid $1.5 million to settle on the house. Immigration records show General Mai visited Australia when the contract of sale was signed in June 2014.
Australia's financial criminal intelligence agency, AUSTRAC, has identified five transfers ranging from $621,838 to $58,978 during 2014-15 from African companies into the local bank account of an Australian firm directed by General Mai's son.
A further hearing will be held on costs.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
Interesting how life unfolds... Australia, journalist's, "money" in Australia, Sudan, and George Clooney the "name used" to drive this narrative.
Interesting...
I've known the intent of evil doers to use Australia as the center point to impose terrorist attacks as well as the jump off point to throw Global financial markets in flux. Before you pounce on my post. I've done the research and I've express this opinion on many, many post here.
What I love most, is the heart of George Clooney to want to make a difference. It's unfortunate his effort is being used by the media to drive a narrative connected to evil doers.
Note: Somebody is listening, included at the end of this article is a "focus" on the investigation of this journalist.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
Just a note -
George isn't being used to drive the narrative.
George himself is instigating the narrative by following those from South Sudan who caused the war and utter devastation and certain death to millions, and who further lined their own pockets while they were at it, and it is they who will be accused of corruption.
This is his initiative - just as Satellite Sentinel was.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
George is not alone in this project, however, his NAME is front and center. The NARRATIVE in this case is dirty money, associated with a "Sudan" Army Gen., connected to Australia, associated with a project George Clooney is involved in.party animal - not! wrote:Just a note -

There are MANY PLAYERS at work in Sudan including Saudi Arabia, China, U. S. Oil/Corporate, the U.S. Political Right, the U.S. Religious Right, and I'm sure there are others. This story and it's narrative is targeted for people who don't know the back story.
Out of all these players you can't convince me an Army Gen. from Sudan is the main character here. You can't convince me George Clooney was not approach because of his name, fame, and most of all his heart to lend an ear and a hand to trusted advisers. Those who haven't done the research might by this story and the it's continued NARRATIVE. I DON'T.
By the way when I was doing this research over 10 years ago Amal Alamuddin's name came up in conversations. Long before any relationship association with George Clooney.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
a) George was not approached. It was his idea.
And of course this army general is not the 'main player here'. Nobody said he was. He is just the tip of the iceberg and this is just the start.
The journalist is an award-winning one as you can see.

And possibly Amal's name came up because she was working for Kofi Annan, the head of the UN at the time

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
George was not approached to do anything as pan said it was his idea.
If I remember correctly he saw something on the news about Sudan contacted his dad and they went to see
first hand what was happening. He has been involved ever since. He started Not On Our Watch with Don Cheadle and others.
He also formed the Sentry.

The Sentry Project was George Clooney's idea? Meaning, George Clooney came up with the Sentry Project idea and presented it to others?party animal - not! wrote:a) George was not approached. It was his idea.

ladybug, where do you gather your information in all the research that you do? You seem to miss a lot of easy-to-find facts that would be integral to any opinion you'd put forth.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
I've did my research over 10 years ago. What I've stated is what I know to be truth. I would love to tell you the exact sources, however my computer with the information is not accessible. It's hard for me to believe this project is George Clooney's idea, I did a brief search, however I could not find anything that states George Clooney authored this Sentry Project. God bless his soul if that information is accurate.Way2Old4Dis wrote:ladybug, where do you gather your information in all the research that you do? Um, did you try thesentry.org ?
Maybe think about updating 10-year-old research before posting an opinion. The world changes.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
That is taken from the mission banner on the home page. It's the first sentence from a more detailed description. The rest of that paragraph, from the 'About' page (emphasis mine)...
There are also numerous press reports and releases about George being the founder and funder.
Co-founded by George Clooney and John Prendergast, The Sentry is an initiative of the Enough Project and Not On Our Watch (NOOW), with investigative support from the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS). The Sentry currently focuses on the corrupt transnational networks linked to those most responsible for deadly violence in South Sudan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and the Central African Republic.

Re: George and The Sentry Score!
Yep.You only have to look on this forum in the 'George's charities' thread.
Your research ten years ago would not have thrown up The Sentry anyway. George set it up in 2014/15.
What was already in existence and has been for several years is the Satellite Sentinel Project which George funds on a daily basis and has since 2011. He uses his fees for his Nespresso ads to keep it in the air.
You could do no better, Ladybug, than to the George's causes and charities thread on here. Loads and loads there - he does so much - and it goes back to 2010!

The AFP will continue to hold assets belonging to the Melbourne family of a South Sudanese military official as they’re suspected of being proceeds of crime.
Titchiang Hoth Mai failed in her attempt in the County Court to prevent the AFP from restraining a $1.5 million house at Narre Warren and an Audi as they investigate financial dealings of her brother Ngouth Oth Mai.
The siblings are the children of James Hoth Mai, a former chief of staff of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army, who is suspected of siphoning assets from South Sudan.

The investigation centres around a company called Sportscars, which was revealed during a hearing last month to have never traded or had any income.
Ngouth Oth Mai is a director and major shareholder of the company.
The Narre Warren home was paid for from the company’s account.

An AFP agent also gave evidence that in August 2015 $28,600 had been transferred into the company’s bank account and the same day $28,595 was withdrawn by cheque.
The following day, the cheque was used to pay for an Audi for Ms Mai.
He alleged the vehicle was the proceeds of an indictable crime, being “avoidance of paying tax on the money that was pushed through the company account”.
He later suspected the property was also involved.

Judge Robert Dyer on Monday said it was clear the agent maintains the suspicions which underpinned his original application.
“The case advanced on behalf of (Ms Mai) in my view lacks a significant factual basis upon which it could succeed,” he said.
The case has been dismissed.
The allegations were first raised in a report by The Sentry, an organisation co-established by American actor George Clooney to investigate the financial interests of senior South Sudanese military figures.
