Amal Clooney: In Conversation with Nick Clooney, Toronto in June
This is from an annoying website that doesn't actually give many details. Not sure if it's part of the Luminato festival in Toronto in June, or something different.

“I am a refugee,” Amal Clooney said to a pin-drop quiet Roy Thomson Hall. “If I had not had a hand extended to me by the U.K. government when my family was escaping the war in Lebanon, I wouldn’t have been able to grow up in a safe environment, get the education I have, or do any of the things that I have done.”
And then, to loud applause from the sold-out crowd: “I am so grateful to have been able to enter a country that showed compassion to me. I wish that were happening in more places around the world.”

Friday night marked the international human rights lawyer’s first appearance in (and first ever visit to) Toronto. She was here as part of Luminato, the city’s international arts festival, in an event in partnership with the Economic Club of Canada. Sophie Gregoire Trudeau opened the evening.
Speaking “in conversation with” her father-in-law, veteran broadcaster Nick Clooney, Amal Clooney touched on a highlight reel of some of the world issues she has championed, including the refugee crisis, the March For Our Lives movement, fighting sexual violence against women and the freedom of the press. She also weighed in on the U.S. separation of immigrant children from their families.
“It’s shameful. It’s not just illegal, it’s immoral,” said Lebanese-British Clooney, before attacking the recent executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump for “not solving the problem” and continuing the “zero tolerance” policy, which she said is “really zero humanity.”
Earlier this week, the Clooney Foundation for Justice, founded by Clooney and her husband, George Clooney, made a $100,000 (USD) donation to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, a frontline organization that works to represent unaccompanied and separated children in court.

One bright spot, for Clooney, is the “bits of good news” in the advancement of women’s equality around the world.
“Feminism to me is women having choices,” she says, adding that the challenges women face will depend on where they are born. “In some parts of Africa, you’re fighting not to be genitally mutilated. In some parts of Asia, you’re fighting to choose who you marry. In the West, you’re still fighting for equal pay for equal work.” She went on to call the #MeToo movement “a powerful force for change.”
There were also moments of levity in the evening. Clooney recounted the incongruity of staying at a hotel full of “honeymooners” while in the Maldives working to free political prisoner Mohamed Nasheed.
“It was depressing,” she laughed. “They were all there with umbrellas in their drinks and I was on my way to court and to prison. I think I’m the only person to visit the Maldives who didn’t dip a toe in the sea.”
Nick Clooney also brought up his daughter-in-law’s “celebrity.” She cringed at the word before acknowledging that her marriage to an A-lister changed things “dramatically.”
Speaking about the early days of her courtship to George Clooney, she remembers him calling her flat in Notting Hill a “disaster” because it opened right onto the street … and the waiting paparazzi.
“I was like, ‘Well, I selected this apartment because it’s next to my favourite Italian (restaurant), near Portobello Market.’ I wasn’t thinking of the pap exposure issue!” she said with mock-outrage.
When pressed for a positive about her new status, she said: “You can turn a spotlight and put it on something important, and you can help people by raising awareness. The worst things happen in darkness, and as a famous U.S. jurist said, ‘Sunlight is the best disinfectant.’ ”
And then Clooney was off, headed straight to the airport. “I have some twins to attend to,” she said, referring to her year old son and daughter, Alexander and Ella. “This is my longest absence from them, which is two nights. But it was worth it to come to Toronto.”

“The worst things happen in darkness,” Amal Clooney told a sold-out room at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall on Friday night.
The international human rights lawyer used her first public appearance in the city to bring awareness to several causes such as the current Syrian and Iraqi refugee crises, reporters who have been jailed around the world, and the separation of children from their families in the U.S., which has recently grabbed international headlines.
“Listening to audio recordings of these children … and the images of those children in cages, you cannot believe you’re talking about the United States of America,” Ms. Clooney said to her father-in-law, long-time journalist Nick Clooney, whom she was in conversation with at the event. At least 2,300 children have been separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border since May under the government’s “zero tolerance” policy on illegal immigration.
Ms. Clooney said the separation of the children from their parents is immoral, constitutes child abuse, and violates international law. U.S. President Donald Trump has since signed an order to stop the separation of families, a move that Ms. Clooney said was possible in part due to the efforts of journalists and activists who raised attention to the issue.
Much of the conversation was also focused on reporters who have been jailed around the world. The cause has been the subject of much of Ms. Clooney’s work as a human rights lawyer. She previously represented Canadian-Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who was jailed with his colleagues while working at the Al Jazeera English bureau in Cairo.
“I could immediately see the sham that was being brought against him,” Ms. Clooney said of the charges Mr. Fahmy faces, which included the “tarnishing of Egypt’s reputation” through his reporting. Mr. Fahmy was jailed for over a year, and was released after receiving a pardon from Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Ms. Clooney said Mr. Fahmy’s case was important to her as it had the potential to set a precedent for the treatment of reporters in the region, and was one that sent “shivers down the spine of every journalist in the Middle East.” She continues to represent journalists facing persecution, and spoke about her current work on the case of two jailed Reuters reporters in Myanmar.
The Lebanese-British lawyer also spoke of her personal connection to fleeing hardship, as her family left Lebanon when she was a toddler in the midst of turmoil. “I am a refugee,” Ms. Clooney told the Toronto crowd, and added she has been impressed with Canada’s private refugee sponsorship program, crediting it as an “amazing contribution.”
Ms. Clooney’s life has been well-documented in the spotlight as of late. She admitted her life has changed “dramatically” since her marriage to husband George Clooney. Yet, she maintains the spotlight has been beneficial when used to shed light on causes she feels are important. “Sunlight is the best disinfectant,” she said.
Also present at the event was Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who gave opening remarks. Ms. Clooney’s visit to Toronto was part of the city’s Luminato International Arts Festival, and was in partnership with the Economic Club of Canada.

Re: Amal Clooney: In Conversation with Nick Clooney, Toronto in June
I think it is outrageous for Amal to identify and refer to herself as a refugee and I will be posting this on other sites.
The Alamuddins were - and are - wealthy and well connected. They did not flee because their lives were under threat, their homes destroyed. They got on a plane and started a new life in the UK. In an affluent area and obviously the parents were well off enough to send their daughters to really good schools. When the situation changed in Lebanon, Amal's father was able to return. Amal Clooney's delusion is that she thinks it compares to the horror and desolation of what being a refugee is like in 2018. Having to make dangerous journeys where your life is at risk at every turn. The boat might sink in the ocean. Your child may be taken away in the US. Your family may be stuck in a filthy camp for years and years. That is what being a refugee is like in 2018. Amal is getting away with a "technicality" and everyone just laps it up as she flicks her hair extensions and parades in another outfit she will only wear once.

I see what you mean, but technically she's right - here's the definition:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Yes, she was fortunate enough to have a father who was on the board of Middle East Airlines, but reports of the war in Beirut at the time and particularly the airport were far from ideal as it was being bombed constantly.
She did not have a private education. She went to a state school - and was bright enough to get into one of the best.
And most of the clothes she wears are borrowed from designers who are falling over themselves to dress her, and very many of her clothes are vintage so not as expensive.....
In a conversation with Angela Merkel and a family who had managed to escape from Syria her husband also claimed he was a refugee from Ireland

Re: Amal Clooney: In Conversation with Nick Clooney, Toronto in June
Refugees from all walks of life around the world have their own stories to tell. Some are more perilous than others. It’s obvious that Amal’s family was better off than many but it doesn’t make her family’s situation in Lebanon at the time any less dramatic or dangerous on some level. We don’t know the particulars of her family’s ordeal. I doubt Amal is delusional about what she experienced. And I think if anyone asked her the particulars she would have a compelling story to tell.

Maybe it's worth remembering how much the Clooneys are giving back to refugees less fortunate than themselves.....and that includes the education of several thousand children in an ongoing project in Lebanon over a number of years. They are very well aware that they have a privileged lifestyle..........

Re: Amal Clooney: In Conversation with Nick Clooney, Toronto in June
Last year, one of my collegues said that her daughter had a new classmate, a refugee. 'But he can't be a real refugee because he wore a quite expensive watch'. My reply was: 'When there's a war going on in your country, wealth may protect you for a while. And at a certain point you realize that you have to leave to save your life'. She had a different opinion on that and we didn't have the time to discuss it, but for many people refugees have to be poor or they are no refugees.
About Amal: I remember having read an interview with her mom who said that they always thought the civil war in Lebanon would end soon and that they were safe. Until one day, Amal and Tala's school bus didn't return at the usual time, they were delayed for hours because the parts of Beirut they usually crossed were bombed and they had to use other routes which led through war zones. The kids were shocked and cried, and that was the moment when their parents decided to leave their home and their native country. Quite understandable, I guess.
And again: Their money protected them for a while and also will have helped them to establish a new life in the UK. But if the school bus had been bombed and their kids had been injured or killed, their wealth hadn't protected them...

I have no problem with Amal claiming to be a refugee - albeit a privileged one - but George? Gimme a break! His grandparents? Maybe. Him? Not so much. I know some men have sympathy pregnancies and sympathy labor pains with their wives. But sympathy refugee status? That's pushing it a bit. (Unless now he considers himself a refugee from the US.)
Refuges or not, they've done a lot to help real refugees around the world.

As I recall I thought George in the meeting with Merkel was referencing his ancestors who came over from Ireland to escape the famine. That may have been what PAN meant.

Gee, folks! Lighten up! I know George was talking about his ancestors leaving Ireland. Of course he doesn't consider himself a refugee (unless, like I said, he's a refugee from the US now). I was kidding around. Where did you guys put your sense of humor?
