I'm guessing thus is George getting the possible bad headlines out of the way by explaining exactly what actually happened before anybody else tries to blow it up.

Yes, I think this all counts as publicity - and to counter the questions that everyone'll ask when he was one of the top names associated with the film originally and now isn't in it at all.

‘I wrote him this awful note’: George Clooney cut Josh Brolin from upcoming movie Suburbicon
AUGUST 15, 20173:10PM
IF YOU’RE looking out for Josh Brolin in the upcoming George Clooney film Suburbicon, you’re going to have a hard time spotting him.
Widespread reports had confirmed Brolin would appear in the ’50s-set drama but, after he filmed the scenes, Clooney — who directed the feature — made the tough decision to cut the actor completely.
And he did it in an “awful note”.
Clooney told Entertainment Weekly Brolin’s scenes were the “funniest in the movie” but they just didn’t work.
“We shot a couple of scenes with Josh [playing] a baseball coach that are really, really funny,” he said. “But after we did our first screening, the one thing that became really clear to me was that [the scenes] let the air out of the balloon, in terms of the tension in the film.
I had to write him this awful note where I just said, ‘You’re not going to believe it, but these scenes really don’t work any more.’ He felt bad, and he thought maybe something went wrong, and I said, ‘I’m sending you the scenes, so you can see, they’re actually the two funniest scenes in the movie.’”

Clooney — who co-starred with Brolin in the Coen brothers’ 2016 film Hail, Caesar! — said it was a difficult decision and recalled a similar situation that happened to him after filming scenes for the 1998 film Thin Red Line.
“I remember sitting there with the editor going, ‘F*ck! I can’t believe this!’ But I’ve sort of been in the same situation. I did a bunch of scenes in Thin Red Line and then got a call from Terry [Malick], saying, ‘We’re cutting out everything except the very last scene.’ I was like, ‘Please cut me completely out of the movie! Don’t leave me in one scene!’ But, [on Suburbicon], it is one of those where we were just, like, ‘There was no option.’ He was so great in the film. I never like talking about those kind of things because it can be really unfair to an actor, except to say he was just absolutely great in the movie.”
He may have been nixed from this project, but Brolin still has some other big movies coming out over the next 12 months including Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2.
Suburbicon — written by Joel and Ethan Coen — stars Matt Damon and Julianne Moore and hits Aussie theatres in November.

George Clooney Had To Write Josh Brolin An "Awful Note" To Tell Him He'd Been Edited Out Of SuburbiconThe actor and director explains why...
By Naomi Gordon
AUG 15, 2017
If you were excited to watch Josh Brolin's comical turn as a baseball coach in George Clooney's new movie Suburbicon, then we bring you some disappointing news.
Clooney has revealed that Brolin has been edited out of his dark comedy, but not because he wasn't funny - the scenes just did't work.
And to make matters even more awkward, Clooney let him know via an "awful note".
"We shot a couple of scenes with Josh [playing] a baseball coach that are really really funny," Clooney told EW.
"But after we did our first screening, the one thing that became really clear to me was that [the scenes] let the air out of the balloon, in terms of the tension in the film. I had to write him this awful note where I just said, 'You're not going to believe it, but these scenes really don't work any more.'"
Although the Deadpool 2 actor "felt bad" at being cut out, Clooney assured him that his scenes were the funniest, and sent them to him to watch for himself.
"He felt bad, and he thought maybe something went wrong, and I said, 'I'm sending you the scenes, so you can see, they're actually the two funniest scenes in the movie.' I remember sitting there with the editor going, 'F**k! I can't believe this!'" he explained.
Clooney admitted that he too has experienced being edited out of a film, adding: "But I've sort of been in the same situation.
"I did a bunch of scenes in Thin Red Line and then got a call from Terry [Malick], saying, 'We're cutting out everything except the very last scene.' I was like, 'Please cut me completely out of the movie! Don't leave me in one scene!' But, [on Suburbicon], it is one of those where we were just, like, 'There was no option.'
"He was so great in the film. I never like talking about those kind of things because it can be really unfair to an actor, except to say he was just absolutely great in the movie."
Suburbicon - written by Joel and Ethan Coen - is a satirical take on suburbia in 1950s America, and features Matt Damon as a typical suburban dad taking on mobsters and hit men after his wife is murdered.
Oscar Isaac, Julianne Moore and Glenn Fleshler also star in the comedy.

Hmm, so George cuts out the "funniest scenes in the movie" and then announces the film isn't a comedy . . .

Thing is, he's been criticized for spotlighting good performances to the detriment of tension and pacing in his films. It seems this time he's looking with a more critical eye to create a more effective film. If it's basically a noir crime film you want it as tight and tense as possible otherwise you dilute the efcect.

Oh Lord- is this going to be one of those films he's always talking about- where he does commercial films to earn money, so he and Grant can make the types of films they'd like to see, which means no one else wants to see or gets the point of the film.

PP - Maybe, but cut the guy a break! He's trying to make a rep for himself as a serious filmmaker - not just a sexy movie star. Hasn't gone super well for him yet so maybe he's trying little too hard.
(PS - the word in my earlier post should have been "effect". Can't spell, can't type either!)

The trailer looks kind of - I'm just shaking my head for now, but I'll wait with critics until I've seen the movie!
It seems to be just him, no matter if he is acting or directing you always feel his personality - maybe he should have rather become a comedian!
The comments on DM are going from emotional, stupid to ridiculous, mixing his private life with his professional life, but then, he is a top AAA celebrity and that's what fans or not fans tend to do!
I hope this Movie will not flop, starting to really pity him!

WTF, the trailer got more than 5M clicks on YouTube with overall really positive reactions or comments from YouTube and Reddit, and some of you are predicting nobody wants to see it!
The buzz is already there even Monuments Men didn't flop boxoffice-wise. Check out what happened to Ben Affleck's Live by Night.
I'll have this to make 50M+ domesticly and 60M internationally. Suburbicon is gonna be the biggest hit for him in years. Matt Damon just happens to be a major star with great boxoffice ability these years.

“Suburbicon” (October 27)
Stupid Matt Damon returns in “Oceans”/“The Informant!” mode in George Clooney’s ’50s bloody suburban dramedy “Suburbicon.” Clooney wrote the script with the Coen Bros. (his collaborators on “Hail, Caesar!,” “Intolerable Cruelty” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) and his producing partner Grant Heslov. Shades of “Double Indemnity,” Damon and Julianne Moore play a hapless husband and wife who are suspected of having offed her sister for the insurance money and are harassed by a suspicious insurance agent (Oscar Isaac). Launching in Venice and Toronto, Paramount is banking that the movie is more accessibly successful than Clooney’s last effort “Monuments Men” and promises a full awards push. According to the official synopsis: “This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices.”

I'm really hoping it's going to be a great film. The trailer really looked good. Just a little worried because of the seemingly change of direction and I don't think it's a good sign when the promotion of a film says one thing and the director says something else.

Yeah, basically promoting a film that doesn't exist. Sure way to disappoint some movie goers.Katiedot wrote:I'm really hoping it's going to be a great film. The trailer really looked good. Re: George drops Brolin from Suburbicon'
I hold hope for this...I will probably be the first here to see it...and promise a fair review....Do I have expectations? of course...but as I said it is more hope than certainly.....
From what George has said it feels like it has the vibe from the opening scenes of Tomorrowland.....The Disney park scenes where everything was sooooo American, so beautiful.... a golden age in wonderful Technicolour.....
Then it slides down to dark....
My hope here is Matt...One of my favourite all time movies is "The Talented Mr Ripley"......Matt in that movie was the epitome of dark and sinister, but the whole time hiding beneath a veneer of All American Charm.....He can pull sinister off- no sweat....
I can't wait.....

I really hope this isn't George's way to make the point that America was never that great to begin with, because we've had enough of that in the real world this last year. It looks like this movie is much darker and angrier than the original trailer made it seem. I'm not sure I want to see it now. I don't need more stress in my life.

The subplot is adapted from the true events happened in Levittown, PA.LizzyNY wrote:I really hope this isn't George's way to make the point that America was never that great to begin with, because we've had enough of that in the real world this last year. The main plot is original story about a murder &home invasion. Should be interesting.
If you don't want any stress, why did horror such as GET OUT hit massively? On the contrary only GIRLS TRIP did well as a comedy.
As far as I'm concerned, Suburbicon has funny moments mostly in the first half, it's just this specific Coens dark humor that is not for everyone.

Re: George drops Brolin from Suburbicon'
Sevens - Have you seen the movie? You sound as if you have. I don't know if the story is adapted from actual events in Levittowm, other than the fact that the place was supposed to be the perfect 1950's post-WWII suburb built to fulfill the American dream for returning veterans and their families. The main plot is, as you said, fictional.
Horror movies are hitting big because there are people who like them (mostly bored kids on vacation from school). I am not one of them. I don't need to go see some cheesy horror flick to get scared. The real world is scary enough.

Lizzy I didn't see the film that's just some teas I gathered from people who saw it. Hopefully that could give you some relief one person even claimed this is Clooney's best work as a director some others also agreed it's better than Ides of March. I'm looking forward to a clever, intense yet funny movie.LizzyNY wrote:Sevens - Have you seen the movie? You sound as if you have. Re: George drops Brolin from Suburbicon'
They went to test screenings as most movies do have those testings. Suburbicon seems to have only two public testings, one in March in LA one in a small town based on Levittown,PA a couple of weeks ago. Endless testings has never been a good sign cause they need to adjust the film more or less.

Re: George drops Brolin from Suburbicon'
Thanks for your insight Sevens.
I thought that the movie was supposed to be more dark and intense than funny so Im glad George was willing to cut the scenes with Brolin if he thought they didn't work. It sounds like it was a difficult decision for him but it also doesn't sound like Brolin had a big or pivotal role.
