It all started during a routine scan of my friend Olivia’s wardrobe the other week. All of a sudden, I spied a fur like none I’d seen before. It reminded me of my drapey Rick Owens leather jacket, except in mink and sable. This Dennis Basso jacket stood out for its light weight, slender silhouette, and high-impact color-blocked stripes; the fox vests and mink bombers hanging nearby suddenly seemed slightly duller by comparison. The jacket became an instant trigger point for wardrobe exploration—especially during a spring when East Coast temperatures kept fluctuating between warm and cool. I begged her to let me borrow it.
“Wearing fur in the spring is as easy as any other material,” advises Carolyn Rowan, whose eponymous fur and accessories label is stocked by Moda Operandi and Neiman Marcus. “It makes any outfit just a bit more fun or glamorous.” The following day, as I offset shredded white jeans and a simple henley with my borrowed find, I couldn’t help but agree. At work meetings, it was immediately met with smiles and approving nods, while at a cocktail party that evening thrown by Georgina Chapman and Plum Sykes, It girls were pawing my sleeves. No one was surprised by the jacket on me per se; what drew attention was the concept of wearing fur in May.

Yet according to fourth-generation furrier Lysa Lash, furs don’t have to be strictly for keeping warm. In lighter weights and constructions, the material also provides a bit of “everyday opulence.” “Furs make an outfit stand out with a little glam and can be worn many ways,” she says. This holds true for Amal Clooney, Bella Hadid, and Jennifer Lopez, who have all adapted new ways to wear the onetime winter material, thanks to the Italian label Lilly e Violetta. “Spring furs are designed for glamour,” said Maria Murray, the designer behind the brand. “[They’re] ready to be thrown over the shoulders with jeans or paired with a spring dress.”

Murray also points out that her brand’s sustainably produced pieces are a smart investment—heirlooms to be passed down between generations or friends. As for my friend’s fur, not only does it represent a softer, cozier alternative to my basic leather jacket, but it also makes for an ideal cover-up in my overly air-conditioned office. And with New York temperatures about to slide back into the ’60s this weekend, it feels as timely as ever. Good thing I still haven’t returned it.[/size][/size]
