The River Thames burst its banks, sending floodwater cascading into the grounds of George Clooney's new mansion and threatening to encroach on the £10 million home that has just had a major renovation completed.
Other homes in Sonning-on-Thames, Berkshire, were also under threat as the flood-swoollen river topped its banks and the Environment Agency warned issued a flood warning for the village.
Clooney, the 54-year-old Ocean's Eleven star, and his barrister wife, Amal, live in a 17th Century Grade II listed mansion on the banks of the Thames in Sonning.
Following recent repeated deluges of heavy rain in the south of the UK, the water levels of the River Thames have risen dramatically and have gushed into the film star's garden - just yards from his front door.

The Environment Agency warned that the picturesque stretch of river running from Mapledurham to Sonning was likely to burst its banks and flood low-lying areas throughout the day.
An Environment Agency spokesman said: "Levels on the River Thames at Reading have risen in response to recent rain.
Showers on Monday may lead to flood water flowing out into low lying areas today."
The Environment Agency has released an image of the areas at risk to flooding.
The Thames-side Clooney mansion sits on an island in the river.
Building work at Aberlash house was mostly completed following renovations carried out to piece together a new pool house, but the remaining workers had to pack a set of wellies as a second massive pool was forming and deepening in the flat garden.
The slowly-rising flood, which is still free-flowing as more water pours in, can be viewed through gaps in the fenceline perimeter of the property from a public footpath running alongside the River Thames.
The flooded area is already larger than the house itself and covers a large patch towards the edge of the front garden, but has not yet reached the house.
From the air, it can be viewed in comparison to Clooney's newly-fitted outdoor swimming pool and is significantly bigger, swallowing the comparatively tiny leisure pond.

George Clooney's house in Sonning-on-Thames before the water levels had risen
The French Horn restaurant, on the opposite side of the river to the Clooney house, has river access steps where customers visiting by boat can moor and walk up to the garden.
However, the water levels had risen so much on Wednesday that the river waters were lapping against the top step ready to spill onto the garden.
Two years ago, the Thames flooded and cut off some of the surrounding villages, including Caversham and Sonning, as the Sonning Bridge was shut due to flood damage in February 2014.

The Clooneys moved in just months later, but were yet to experience the true ferocity of their neighbouring river.
Clooney hit the headlines recently after neighbours of his country manor spoke of their outrage at the noisy construction work taking place at the house as part of a project to install CCTV cameras and to build a cinema room and pool house.
Clooney and his wife bought their mansion in October 2014 after tying the knot in a star-studded ceremony in Venice.

The nine-bedroom listed building sits on a green patch of land straddling the Berkshire and Oxfordshire border in the picturesque quietude of the River Thames.
Set in four acres on the outskirts of the village of Sonning, the Clooneys' neighbours include Home Secretary Theresa May and Led Zeppelin founding member and guitarist Jimmy Page.

Hahaha PAN. LOL! Me think much to do ..... Doesn't look like it's really a threat to the house. But that pool! Quite a nice size for getting a good workout. 10 laps let's say?

Re: George Clooney's Sonning garden flooded - Telegraph
Looks damned serious to me. Take another look at the first photo, annemarie. The property is surrounded by water, which looks like it's about to burst forward onto dry land- namely his. Look beyond the "pond" and consider soil erosion, etc that goes along with flooding, and his Nibs may be in for a crap-load of trouble.
PS... that's really nasty looking river water- bacteria/waste from other flooded areas??????

Water can be as destructive as it is regenerative. Nothing ruins property long-term like floodwater. Fire is destructive, but it's quick and allows for almost immediate regrowth. Too much water lingers and seeps and soaks and saturates, and nothing can be right again until the water re-finds its level.

Way2 that sounds pretty awful!
Well maybe someone swindled our guy into buying what we here in the states refer to as swamp land.
This can't be the first time this has ever happened on this property.

Re: George Clooney's Sonning garden flooded - Telegraph
Way2Old - As usual you described the situation perfectly. It isn't just the floodwater. It's the aftereffects and the residual damp and mud and mold. Anyone who builds/buys a house near water - especially on a small island in the middle of a big river - should have a pretty good idea of what they're in for and prepare accordingly. George is smart. I'm sure there are pumps strategically placed on the property and other precautions taken. If not, well they won't get my sympathy.
We hear it every time there's a big storm and the beach houses in the Hamptons get beat to hell. If the people who own those houses don't follow guidelines to make their homes as storm-proof as possible - if they insist on building in flood zones - then the resulting problems they have are to a large extent their own fault. I'm tired of my tax money being used to rebuild those homes over and over again.
(Sorry for going off topic, Katie. )

I think the flooding was talked about when it was first revealed they bought the home.

Annemarie - You're right, it was. I wonder if they told him the extent of the flooding problem - or if this is worse than it's been before. Either way, I don't think he'd have bought the property if he thought they couldn't manage the problem.

There are trees still being uprooted from the soaked ground from the extended rain we had more than a month ago.
I don't think George would buy a property like his without knowing the possibilities. If he did, well, too bad. Get out the buckets and the squeegies.

Re: George Clooney's Sonning garden flooded - Telegraph
Right Way2. It seems that the area is known for flooding. I checked the House In England thread and found an article from a local paper about the Clooney purchase. It quoted a neighbor who said that 'the newlyweds should not be affected by the rising water. The water gets high and right up to the house - but not in it.'
George and Amal obviously know of the problem and probably bought lots of buckets and squeegies ... and wellies in case of emergencies.

Re: George Clooney's Sonning garden flooded - Telegraph
Well, girls, he's on an island in the middle of the Thames on ten acres of land This happens!
I wouldn't be surprised if he alludes to it in interviews, and he will know as well as anybody else in the UK that many people in the North of England and Scotland have lost their ehtire homes to flooding recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to castigate the Daily Mail once again on such an 'over-the-top' (sorry about the pun) story.........

Re: George Clooney's Sonning garden flooded - Telegraph
The main buildings look to be a bit higher up and less likely to be susceptible to flooding. The fencing around the bank of the river seems to be only a temporary structure so possibly the construction company were due to do some work on the bank to make it less likely to be flooded in the future. There is clearly still some work to be done on the garden area.

Its only a puddle in the area of the garden that gets flooded occasionally.
The River Thames is always a brown coloured river.
Check out any picture of London. Lol.
Great trailer for Money Monster !
