It seems the wilder tales about economics are, the more audiences dig the material. Martin Scorsese turned the depraved tale of Jordan Belfort into a blockbuster hit with "The Wolf Of Wall Street," and Adam McKay's irreverent take on Michael Lewis' "The Big Short" is doing very well at the box office. And while Jodie Foster's upcoming thriller "Money Monster" isn't based on a true story, it seems to be pushing similar buttons.

Starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Jack O'Connell, the movie will follow Lee Cates (Clooney), a TV money guru who gets taken hostage on air by Kyle (O'Connell), an ordinary man who lost all his money thanks to a bad recommendation from Lee. That's certainly some powerful stuff that will not only lend Foster an opportunity to comment on financial types, but on the media as well.

I'm having a blank here - is this the one already filmed, right?

Right, Katie. This one filmed ages ago (with Jodie Foster at the helm). Apparently they've been working on it in post-production ever since.

There was a lot of media coverage of the filming because they were out on the streets of NY and Amal and the doggies came to visit on the set.

........although I'm guessing, Lizzy, that there's been quite a lot of studio work done since the location stuff in the spring in NYC. It didn't last that long really, did it?

PAN - The studio work was done in NY too, in a studio in Queens (one of NY's 5 boroughs) around the same time as the location shoots in Manhattan. I'd guess all told they were working here for several weeks.

This movie has been in post production a lot longer than it took to film. I really hope it isn't because they're having trouble with it. George needs a hit!

In the new thriller Money Monster, George Clooney plays Lee Gates, a Jim Cramer-style financial guru who uses his whiz-bang television show to tout stocks to viewers who can’t tell their bulls from their bears. But all bets are off once an angry investor turns up on set.

Distraught over losing his family’s life savings on a sure-thing fund that’s failed, the young man (Unbroken’s Jack O’Connell) hijacks a live broadcast, takes Gates hostage, and demands answers before the trading day ends. From the control booth, Gates’ formidable producer (Julia Roberts) tries to simultaneously save his life and manage the skyrocketing media frenzy.

Money Monster has been a years-in-the-making passion project for director Jodie Foster, who insists that while the topical story line taps into contemporary outrage over economic injustice, it’s about something more.

“The film is not a polemic,” she says. “It’s really about the brotherhood that forms between these two men who thought they were on opposite sides, who hated each other, until they realize they’re both fighting for the same thing.”

It also gave Foster a chance to work with Clooney, who is producing the film, and Roberts for the first time. The veteran actress was particularly struck by her leading lady’s innate star power.

“It’s something chemical,” Foster says. “She just sits in the chair and out it comes: It’s so real, so genuine, so effortless. In this movie, she’s got no makeup on, she’s got her hair yanked up. She’s practically wearing a sweatshirt and you can’t take your eyes off of her… [This casting] was all a bit of a dream for us.”

Money Monster will be released on May 13.

I wonder what's around his neck in that set shot with Foster....looks confusing...

maybe it's a sort of napkin which is used by hairdressers or make-up artists to protect the clothes.

Carolhathaway - That's what I thought, too - except George says he never wears makeup, so why would he need it?! Maybe he was wearing some sort of makeup to simulate a bruise or maybe he was just coming from eating a messy lunch.

LOL.  Maybe George was tackling lobster during  lunch!


I was thinking maybe he was shooting a scene in which his character is in "make-up" prior to going on the air.  They cut the scene and he and Jodie are talking between takes.

George said that he doesn't wear make-up but I think if his role requires it he won't refuse.

Carolhathaway - I'm sure he wouldn't refuse to wear makeup if the role called for it. As a matter of fact, I think Donnamarie is probably right. Maybe he's coming from a scene where his character is being made up to be on tv.

Too bad we can't just call him up and ask him.
