I don't care what the critics said about this film. It may only have been a "good" rather than a "great" movie, but its aftereffects have been really impressive. George and Grant should be really proud of this film.

Totally agree, Lizzy, and I'm sure the UN's intentions are good. But which blue helmets will be asked to stand over the wreck that is Palmyra....?.
Wish they'd acted earlier really.......but I guess to get a (un)ified response is pretty amazing

I'll second that Lizzy. The story behind MM will always be relevant as long as historical sites and artifacts are at risk in war torn countries.
Very cool. And yes George and Grant should be proud!

Re: UN to deploy 'Monuments Men'
My father had studied history and always told me stories of art historians who were on airplanes of the RAF and US air force and told them what they could blow up and what not. So many historical cities and castles etc. were preserved. This story wasn't new to me and I never understood why Hollywood never picturized it. I was actually quite astonished that it was an unknown story because I thought if we in Germany knew about it everybody else did as well. Especially since it was mostly Americans and Brits who did preserve the art.
Quite a lot if the movie was filmed nearby and my kids told me a few times that they were late for school or came home late because the traffic was stopped 'due to funny looking soldiers coming out of the bushes and crossing the streets'. And when I watched the movie I actually liked it. It surely wasn't George's greatest movie but it also wasn't as bad as many critics assumed. And since it really seem to have a lasting impact I agree that Grant and George should be proud of it.
