Never heard of Stephen Colbert before but he seems to be the guy who is replacing Letterman and George is his first guest in 32 days.

Stephen became well known for his work in the Daily Show with Jon Stewart (who had his final show last night).
Stephen went on to get his own show called The Colbert Report that ran from 2005 to 2014. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I really like Stephen's shows and I think George intends to get along with him more since Jon and Letterman both retired now, He would have to be on Stephen's Late Night show in the future to promote his films.
Stephen is a terrific host and should have great interactions with George, Looking forward to this debut.

Yeah I've thought of one of the jokes George and Stephen might share on the show:
GC: Last time when I was on this show, I was handcuffed. So you won't know what I've got this time....

Re: George Clooney Guest on Colbert Late Show Sept 8 2015
I read that George was also the inaugural guest on both the Rosie O'Donnell and Jimmy Kimmel shows.
This should be interesting. Everyone stateside is curious how Colbert will be as a late night host. As himself. On The Colbert Report he wasn't himself. Ever. He played the part of a diehard Republican on every show. And he did it very well. And this is the way we know Colbert. As this persona. This show is a big change for him. So the dynamics with George on his first show should be very interesting.

The response to the news of George as the first guest has been disinterest, to put it nicely. But Colbert is a comic genius, and George is his mancrush. If George is his usual interview self, it will be a good time.

Re: George Clooney Guest on Colbert Late Show Sept 8 2015
I kind of wish George would have been on his previous show. It would have been fun to see George play off the "Stephen Colbert" character, which was essentially Bill O'Reilly on steroids.
I don't think the "disinterest" in George's appearance is a reflection on him as much as of the reality that most people don't watch late night television anymore, certainly not in real time. Most viewers wait to see clips of shows or bits the next day online. It'll be a high rated episode only because everyone is curious what Colbert will be like out of character. I think he's terrific, and can't wait for the new show.

Way2, where are you reading the negatives about George's appearance?
It should be a good interview. What will be interesting to see is how Colbert fills his new role as host. What will be his style of interviewing? Will he have a cynical edge? More jovial? Sarcastic? Smart ass? Hard to know since we have only seen him in character for so many years.

Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell used to work with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show .... which just ended its 20 something year run just last week. They are all terrific comedians. Colbert is particularly politically savvy, much like Stewart but they have completely different styles.

D-Marie, the comments in the articles in the industry-oriented media (Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Studio System News, newsletters and blogs that cover movies and TV, etc) are decidedly on the side of George as an uninspired and maybe even detrimental choice as a first guest.
George and Colbert are both funny and savvy performers. It will work. And Colbert is probably not going for the usual star interview anyway.

Re: George Clooney Guest on Colbert Late Show Sept 8 2015
I just heard that Jeb Bush is going to be another one of his guests that night. Seems like an odd combination of guests - a dyed in the wool Republican and George! If they share screen time and actually converse it could be a very interesting show.
I'm just wondering what demographic Colbert is aiming for. Maybe he's going to skew towards the older, more politically savvy viewer to contrast with the two Jimmys.

Jeb Bush is a dullard. The old Colbert persona would have had a field day with him. Wonder what the 'real' Colbert will do.

I'm kind of excited by this? Maybe? If you've ever heard the "real" Colbert interviewed himself, he is super sharp and smart, and I almost can't believe Jeb agreed to this interview. Colbert (in character) famously eviscerated George W. as host of the White House Correspondents Dinner a few years back, standing just feet away from the president while he did it. There really aren't words to describe how incredible (and SO SO FUNNY) it is to watch this politician who hasn't had anyone tell him the truth about anything in YEARS, be told all about himself by a comedian.
I think Jeb might be misunderstanding what's about to happen to him. He won't be "jamming the news" like he did with Fallon a couple weeks ago. This could be ugly/amazing. I just hoped Colbert isn't too reined in now that he's at CBS versus Comedy Central.
PS: Here's Colbert with W at the Press Correspondents dinner in 2006. Totally on topic because George was present at the dinner (believe he was there as Kristof's guest re: Darfur) It's 25 minutes, but totally worth it. Stay with it at least until he compliments the Bush administration by comparing it to the Hindenburg disaster.

I can't wait for his first show. This is new territory for Colbert so we don't know what to expect. Hope he doesn't drool all over George. You know. That man crush thing.
And hopefully Colbert can stir Jeb up a bit. Bring out his wild side. Does he have a wild side? Even his brother George could make me laugh ..... unfortunately for the wrong reasons.

Re: George Clooney Guest on Colbert Late Show Sept 8 2015
I guess you can't blame Bush for taking advantage of the opportunity. I wonder if he checked with Colbert first. It doesn't sound like it. It just seems a little like being invited to a party at someone's home and then putting the address on the internet. Kind of disrespectful of the host.
I know others, including George, have done this sort of thing, but it was usually for charity not political fund raising. I wonder if Colbert will say anything about it. I can't see him saying anything on the show itself because the contest winner will be there and I don't think he'd want to embarrass them.

Well, let's see where CBS stand on it, because it sounds like political manipulation on the cheap and that CBS are being used for just that.
They'd have to balance it up with something along the same lines for the Democrats wouldn't they?

PAN - I was wondering if the Fairness Doctrine would apply, too. I'm sure CBS has it's lawyers scrambling to see if they're going to have a problem with the law or the other candidates.
It isn't as if CBS is running the contest. The Bush camp is doing it with tickets given to them by the Colbert Show (standard practice) for their personal use, so I guess they can do whatever they want with them. I doubt there's anything illegal about it, but it just doesn't feel right.

It could be perceived as CBS backing the Republicans couldn't it?
I don't really know the technical side of how an American election is run - I know it's a long process and that you need a lot of money to campaign for so long - but I'm pretty sure that in the UK that that tactic wouldn't be allowed

It's pretty iffy over here, too. I wouldn't be surprised if other candidates complain to CBS. They might even go the legal route and try to sue - although I don't know what grounds they'd have. And I don't see how CBS could level the playing field for the other candidates. They can't run contests for them all to raise money. Maybe they'll ask Bush to cancel the contest.

What a wonderful, diverse line up, Elon Musk, Jeb Bush...
& George Clooney.
Of course, comparisons to David Letterman will always be made about Colbert's show. Maybe he could capture a similar audience...
But it'll never be like the original with similar ratings; a new & popular show, though. Time slot....
Hope George Clooney focuses on himself. His work & humanitarian efforts. It should really be about him.
Not as a billboard poster boy for others....

here it is, the interview video
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
George Clooney Promotes Fake Movie On “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” (VIDEO)
George Clooney appeared as the first-ever guest on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday, but because the actor didn’t have an actual movie to promote, he decided to play clips from a fake one called Decision Strike. Watch the funny video below!
Clooney was rocking a goatee for the interview, prompting Colbert to crack, “Thank you for coming dressed up as your evil twin.” Jokes aside, Colbert was touched that the actor would come on his show without any agenda, since Clooney doesn’t have a film coming out soon. “I’m just here to see you,” Clooney told the new talk show host. “And I think that’s why everyone else is here.” With that, the studio audience chanted “Stephen! Stephen! Stephen!”
Even though Clooney had nothing to plug, Colbert told him, “We can pretend that you have a movie. Let’s say it’s some sort of action thriller.” The host then came up with the title, “Decision Strike,” and said that in it Clooney plays “a tough no-nonsense secretary general of the U.N.” Clooney liked the pitch, adding, “The whole world is on the brink of destruction, and my character is the only one who can stop it.”
Colbert then played a “clip” from Decision Strike, which featured someone knocking on Clooney’s dressing room door. The actor came out in a full tuxedo, and yelled, “Not now damn it! I’m defusing a nuclear bomb.” Colbert praised the “scene” from Clooney’s non-existent movie, and went on to show a romantic clip from the film. The footage also featured someone knocking on Clooney’s dressing room door, but this time he emerged yelling, “Not now! I’m making love to a woman. It’s very romantic!”
A third clip from the fake movie was an “action sequence” and featured Clooney hanging from an “airplane door,” which was really just the door to the same dressing room. Colbert was excited by the footage, saying, “Don’t tell me what happens next.” Clooney responded, “I won’t, because the movie does not exist.”
Watch the video below of George Clooney promoting his “new movie” Decision Strike on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and tell us what you think.

This interview was very superficial, too many themes plus three trailers in less than ten minutes?
I think George is a very easy guest to talk to so in my opinion the hosts didn't do a very good job. But I don't know him so I can't compare it to other interviews he had done before.

Re: George Clooney Guest on Colbert Late Show Sept 8 2015
I like Stephen Colbert and I love George, but the interview last night was disappointing. It's going to take Colbert time to get used to the pacing and timing of the show. Last night he zoomed through the show as if he was afraid to stop talking for even a second. He hardly gave his guests a chance to respond - asked questions and barely listened to the answer before he moved on. He seemed very nervous to me - very manic.
I wish George had waited until Colbert was more comfortable hosting before he came on the show. It might have been a better interview.
PS-hathaross and annemarie - We were right! The extra jacket was for a skit!
