David Starkey takes a swipe at Mrs Clooney: Historian tells her to 'shut up', claiming Human Rights Act has gone too far

Amal Clooney, 37, who is a respected barrister specialising in human rights and international law, was told to 'shut up' by David Starkey
David Starkey has taken a swipe at George Clooney's lawyer wife, telling her to 'shut up' and accusing her of working in a 'human rights industry'.
Amal Clooney, 37, is a respected barrister specialising in human rights and international law.
But Dr Starkey, 70, said judges and lawyers have hijacked the European Convention on Human Rights and expanded it beyond the purpose proposed by Winston Churchill after the Second World War.
The result has been a society where people are too concerned about their human rights and do not think enough about their duties to society, he claimed.
The balance between the two, dating back 800 years to Magna Carta, has been thrown off-kilter said Dr Starkey, who recently published Magna Carta: The True Story Behind The Charter.
He said it could be restored if 'the Amal Clooneys and Shami Chakrabartis would shut up', also referring to the director of human rights campaign group Liberty.
Mrs Clooney may have shot into the public eye when she married her actor husband in a lavish Italian ceremony last year, but she has forged a notable career as an international human rights lawyer.
Among her previous roles she served as an adviser to Kofi Annan in his role as a United Nations special adviser for Syria.
She also represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in his extradition proceedings.

Re: David Starkey takes a swipe at Amal Clooney re human rights
I didn't understand where this was coming from all of a sudden so I looked up another article that gives a bit more background concerning the situation, although I still don't find it entirely clear, so if anyone could explain, please do! Does anyone know who this man is exactly? Why is he as a historian attacking the human rights system in the UK? I don't think he should call out specific lawyers, like Amal, only because she's more known than other human rights lawyers. That's quite unfair.

Amal Clooney is widely regarded as one of the most engaging and successful barristers in international law.
The top human rights lawyer may have shot to world fame following her marriage to George Clooney in Venice last year, but only after she’d served as a special advisor to then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and represented the likes of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, among others.
Dr David Starkey, however, is less than impressed by her achievements. The historian went as far as to accuse Clooney of promoting human rights “beyond the purpose proposed by Winston Churchill after the Second World War”.
The result, the Mail Online quotes him as saying, is a society in which people are so hyper-focused on human rights that they’ve forgotten about their own contributions and duties to society.
The balance, he reportedly said, between human rights and duty has been lost, and could only be restored if “the Amal Clooneys and Shami Chakrabartis would shut up”.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] According to the article, he also referred to human rights campaign group Liberty as a source of the apparent “problem”.
The Magna Carta: The True Story Behind The Charter author’s comments come amid debate about Prime Minister David Cameron’s plans to scrap the European human rights laws.
The 1998 Human Rights Act incorporates into British law the European Convention on Human Rights, which is enforced by the Strasbourg court. Strasbourg has the power to overturn rulings made in British courts and the Supreme Court in London.
The women who are shaping our world
A number of cases causing controversy include foreign criminals who have won the chance to avoid being deported by successfully using their human right to family life.
The Human Rights Act also protects people’s rights to freedom of expression and worship, non-discrimination, life and to be treated humanely.
Starkey is yet to respond to request for clarification.

Re: David Starkey takes a swipe at Amal Clooney re human rights
Davd Starkey is a British constitutional historian (Cambridge, LSE) who tends to have what seem to be outrageous views, and I think this statement is vaguely linked to the fact that David Cameron is thinking about altering the Human Rights act in this country vis a vis the European courts.

If she were going to give up her job she would have when she married George, she has stated she will keep working.
Amal does her job all people have rights whether they are god or bad and they deserve to be treated fairly.

Re: David Starkey takes a swipe at Amal Clooney re human rights
I don't pretend to know anything about this issue, but one thing Dr. Starkey said did ring true for me. We have become more concerned with our individual rights than we are with our duties and responsibilities to society as a whole.
It isn't new. It's a level of self-involvement and entitlement that I've seen growing in my students over the years and I find it very sad. (That's why - in another thread- I expressed a hope that Disney would make the Tomorrowland challenge into a real program.) We need a reminder that having rights comes with responsibilities. We can't just take - we have to give back.

Re: David Starkey takes a swipe at Amal Clooney re human rights
First of all Mr. Starkey loses all cred with me when he calls out lawyers and tells them to "shut up".
He has strong opinions about an overemphasis of individual rights vs rights as a society. I don't know much about the law but I believe an individual, whether proven guilty or not, is entitled to be treated fairly and just while going through the court system. On a global level we always should strive to provide all just representation. That doesn't happen all the time so lawyers like Amal come in to rectify those injustices. I would hate to see the alternative that Mr Starkey is suggesting be the world view.
Well the guy know how's to get attention. Tell Amal Clooney to shut up!

Lizzy this isnt the right thread but just want to say I didn't know you were a teacher. A very honorable position. And a difficult one too! Thanks for all that you do. I am sure it is a challenge and I do agree that young people have a strong sense of self-involvement and entitlement. It is sad and it also is a rude awakening to them when they become adults in the real world.

Lizzy your right but also a lot of these kids are getting this attitude from the parents. The times have changed and not for the better I'm afraid.

Re: David Starkey takes a swipe at Amal Clooney re human rights
Donnamarie - As I said, I really don't know much about the Human Rights Act and wouldn't presume to comment on anything having to do with it. Dr. Starkey seems to think that the lawyers involved with the case are taking the focus in the wrong direction. For all I know he might be right - or wrong. I don't know.
To you and Annemarie - Yes, our kids are in for a rude awakening when they join the "real world" - and IMO it is the fault of all the so-called adults in the world who want to be "friends" rather than parents. I could go off on a real rant here, but it's just too nice a day. Get out and enjoy - I'm going to.
