MONEY MONSTER: this Jodie Foster directed George Clooney movie looks like it could be a 70s film dragged into the present day.

Re: Money Monster trailer

Re: Money Monster trailer
My guess is that it's a teaser trailer that includes one scene or a couple of short scenes.
I'd still bet on a short 2015 release in NYC and LA to make it eligible for awards, with it going wider in 2016.

"Money Monster"
Jodie Foster's thriller about a CNBC-esque pundit (George Clooney) who is held hostage by a disgruntled fan (Jack O'Connell) looks very, very good. Sony does not want this movie to be perceived as an awards picture (one reason they keep sticking to the 2016 release date), but once you throw in Julia Roberts as Clooney's producer this looks like a borderline prestige play. Think "Inside Man" without the bank robbery and masked gunmen.

Favorite stuff from the Sony panel was footage from @Sethrogen's new movie X-MAS & the tense '70s era vibe from Jodie Foster's Money Monster

Re: Money Monster trailer
Why wouldn't they want the movie to be considered an awards picture? "Please don't think our film is excellent!" Sony: continuing their tradition of good decision-making.

Re: Money Monster trailer
It makes no sense to me that they wouldn't want this considered for awards season....especially since everyone who's seen footage of it says it looks excellent. Wtf is Sony doing?

Re: Money Monster trailer
I think (I hope) what they're saying is that the movie isn't "awards bait," which means it was made purely or mostly as a prestige project for an actor and/or director, without much hope of a big box office. In other words, they think it's a good movie whether it gets awards or not.
I'm hoping that's what that statement meant.

Well, we saw what thinking that a movie is an "awards season type" had done to Monuments men, I think it is a good idea to market the movie as it is, not as what might sell more..

It wasn't George's intent nor did he plan on marketing MM for award season. He answered that question long before the movie came out. He said as much before they moved the release date to February. From his quotes I read he just wanted it to be an entertaining film and to tell an interesting and little known story from WW11.
But of course the media and movie critics will make their own assessments of what is awards worthy, sometimes contrary to the director/producers intent.

Re: Money Monster trailer
George always says that. I believe 100% that MM was planed for the Award season the way it was presented in the press during the making. See the links below. And in the last link below you see an article that sony even denied another article which said MM was not made for the Award season and was open for it. I'm sure it was planed but then things change.
And then during making of the movie, it came out that they don't finish in time for the award season. I'm sure George was disappointed that he couldn't finish in time. I'm pretty sure they were hoping for at least a bit.

Re: Money Monster trailer
Not only was MM not ready on time, but I think someone quietly took George aside and pointed out that it wasn't award-worthy either. When he was filming it, there were 'leaked' articles about how MM would gather awards for this and for that (same stories as we're getting now) but I think when it was finally edited, it became clear that it wasn't really good enough to compete.

Re: Money Monster trailer
I'm not convinced. Every link I read pretty much proves my point. It's bring interpreted that George was talking out of both sides of his mouth. The articles never quote George intention of marketing this movie for awards season. It seems tho that some cynics are saying of course he was. The move to delay the release was because George knew there were problems with the film and he needed more time to address them. And I don't think he wanted to put MM out there during the holiday season when the competition with other movies could be disastrous.

Re: Money Monster trailer
I think when he went into MM he was really high on the project and carried everyone along with him. His enthusiasm probably led SONY to expect more from the film than he ultimately was able to deliver.
Every time he directs a film he tries something new. Since he's learning as he goes, maybe he'd have more critical success if he stuck to one genre for a while - at least long enough to get the feel for the rhythms and technical tricks that make that genre work well. He does political dramas really well.
I like his movies, but have to admit he still has room to improve.

Re: Money Monster trailer
Lizzy I feel too that George was really high on this project and so was Sony. And so were the critics in advance of its release. Clooney directing. Star-studded cast. George had great expectations and a lot to prove to himself. And I think as I'm sure he does too that each new project is a learning experience for him. Obviously George was very humbled by the outcome of MM but in hindsight it's probably a net positive for him. Note to himself "Pitfalls to avoid next time around". But I think he will continue to explore different genres.
We're going to get into trouble for posting these MM comments here.

Oh dear...am I too late to add to the MM comments ?
Sorry but.....
I just wanted to say that I wondered if the fact that they all had a happy time
making MM made George happy anyway ?
Hope it did.

As much as I'm interested in all things Clooney, I have to say, that picture of Daniel Craig at the link nearly made me fall off my chair. Geezus that man is gorgeous in that shot!

Re: Money Monster trailer
Well since Nicky AND Katie participated in the off topic commentary about MM then neither can say anything.
"I" at least, went to the Monster trailer info and commented on something I saw there. Also off topic yes, I admit, but I didn't get sucked into the MM awards season scenario topic. HA!
