January 2015 Chit Chat
Well, it's 2015 in most of the world right now. We've still got about 3 1/2 hrs left.

You Americans are always a bit late Melbert.
Just finished reading the December thread. Here is my take:
Nicky, English food is better then German food. But both German and English beer are good.
W2O4D, macaroni and cheese, yuck.
Hope Katie get lucky and Nicky too.
I have gained weight this Christmas and I haven’t eaten that much. I wonder if it's hormons. Well I am still frying pork chops for dinner with boiled potatoes and mushroom sauce and brocolli.

Re: January 2015 Chit Chat
My first day in the new year starts with a rescue.
A baby dove ended up on my balcony. I guess with all the fireworks it got scared and kind of ended up on my balcony. The whole day I'm trying that the dove is flying away but it can't.
Now I put some water there and wait. It cuddled itself now into a corner. I called the animal clinic and they told me that a baby dove will not survice the night on my balcony. So if this baby dove is still there in 2 hours (which I believe it will) I have to bring her to the clinic. Poor thing.....
My first good deed this year hehe

Re: January 2015 Chit Chat
Welcome to the forum Bellalique
To continue my story...the Baby dove is still on my balcony. It tried to fly this afternoon but didn't got far. And the animal clinic things that the mother might still be around and feed it. So we want to wait until tomorrow.
I put a big box with paper on the blacony so it has something to hide and keep warm but it is sitting just at the corner and looking around.
So let's see what happens tomorrow.
Normally, doves are like "flying rats" just dirty. Oh well...it is a baby.....

Welcome, Bellalique! It's always nice to hear a new voice.
Nicky - Would the dove let you handle it so you could put it into the box to keep warm? I hope it survives. You have a good heart to care about it so much.
PS - Has anyone heard from Theminis lately?

Nicky let us know how the baby dove makes it through the night. Such a good thing you're doing. I hate rats. I'm don't think of doves in the same way although they are messy creatures. But just a baby.

Re: January 2015 Chit Chat
OK so baby dove survived the night. We (yes Baby dove and me) were up around 6am. I read online that doves are blind at night and don't fly so later at 8am when it was brighter the baby dove walked around my balcony and the dove could see some other doves downstairs in the grass. And I could the the dove was trying to get ready to fly but didn't. And then after 9am it was gone. Went to look and saw it downstairs with the other doves in the grass :Yahooooo:and believe it or not but there was a white dove too in the grass
Now all doves are gone and flew away. Hope my baby dove has a long life ahead

I might see it this weekend. I really want to see it for the overall story, but I'm dreading the prison camp scenes. The book was so graphic, I had to put it down to make it through some passages.
How did Jolie handle that, in terms of the visuals and the proportion of time spent on it?

Wy2Old - Haven't seen it yet, but from what I've read the prison scenes are pretty graphic. You might want to cover your eyes.

Let us know what you think Way2. It has overall gotten good reviews but supposedly a bit stiff and one-note in its story-telling. I haven't read the book and did not know about the graphic prison camp scenes. Good luck

Saw it and enjoyed it. Didn't realize what a little hoodlum he was as a kid.
Though it does not cover the time when he returned to Japan to meet with his captors and forgive them.
- Spoiler:
- The prison scenes vary. Early right after they were captured and having spent 47 days at sea, they were emaciated and those scenes were difficult. They are held in a jungle type environment and the food they are served is teeming with maggots.
The scenes of the prison where he was tormented by Watanabe (the real name of the prison commander) aren't as graphic as you might think. For instance, one scene where Watanabe is beating him does not show the actual blows but the camera angle shows more so Watanabe's face and the sheer hatred he had for Zamperini. And while he is shown kicking him, again, the angle does not show the actual contact nor Zamperini - he's out of frame.
But it doesn't diminish the horror or how sick one feels seeing how consistently he was targeted for cruelty.
The psychological torment is very difficult to watch. You feel so helpless that no one could help him and that his fellow prisoners were also commanded to torture him. One scene in particular was very, very difficult for me as you could see the men who had to hurt him were sick about it but also had no choice.
The man who was the commander was portrayed as someone who was sick in the mind. In the book he is portrayed more as a sadist who took pleasure in inflicting the beatings.
I went to the film interestingly, with a man who was an airman who dropped food & supplies to the prisoners when the Japanese surrendered.
He said that the US was afraid the Japanese would stop feeding the prisoners all together so that's why he was part of the missions to drop food. He said they dropped anything they could find in the supply coffers so they'd drop things even like cocktail olives from the base officer's clubs in the South Pacific.
The conversation with this 96 year old man who was actually there right after the surrender was absolutely fascinating, and for me added so much more to the film.

Re: January 2015 Chit Chat
We also saw Unbroken and loved it. He led a very interesting life after he got back from the war but the movie only showed his early life and then wartime. I was kind of disappointed in that but then realized it would have to be an extremely long movie to show it all on screen!
The actor who played Louis was amazing. Also, this was one of the best movies I've seen in a while. If AJ doesn't get some award for this, I'll be pissed. Not all of the reviews are glowing for this movie, and it's almost like the critics are coming up with any picky thing to find wrong with it. So if a man directed this war film would there be these comments?

I remember bad comments about Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurst Locker and then she went on to win 2 Oscars and nominated for one.

Best Achievement in Directing The Hurt Locker (2008) Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director. |

Nicky, sorry it took so long to get back to you. We are in Season 6. I guess Season 5 is on DVD now. Well, you have a lot to look forward to in the 6th season and I won't reveal anything. That's the great thing about this show. Every season is almost better than the last. They are always coming up with compelling story lines.
Enjoy the German version. Which version do you enjoy more - English or German?

Thanks guys. Sounds like I should add to my list of movies to see before the Oscars. I actually have never seen an AJ directed movie. Sounds like this is her best effort so far.

Can't remember where we were talking about new year's resolutions, but I've upgraded mine to be: do more of what you enjoy.
That, um, includes sex so my original resolution to get laid still stands. I've just broadened my horizons a bit by including photography and yoga too. [And drinking, but I don't think I need to do more of that as it seems to come naturally already!]
