George and Amal Clooney begin renovations on £10million Grade II listed marital home
They tied the knot in September and now George Clooney and his new bride, Amal are preparing to move into their new marital home.
The couple recently snapped up a £10million Grade II listed mansion in a village in Berkshire, where building works have already begun.
Scaffolding can be seen placed up against the stunning Georgian property which boasts nine bedrooms.

All change: The happy couple tied the knot in Venice, Italy in September
The Clooneys are currently away on new year's break but no doubt are looking forward to settling into their new life in the property which sits alongside the Thames.
The couple were spotted enjoying the 500-year-old local village pub in October as they visited the local attractions.
With its own library, gym, spa, steam room and wine cellar, the mansion has all the creature comforts that a star such as Clooney, 53, might have come to expect.
And for high-flying human rights lawyer Miss Alamuddin, 36, it has the advantage of easy access to London.
The couple’s near–neighbours will include illusionist Uri Geller and Home Secretary Theresa May.

Making it their own: Scaffolding covers the stunning property as works begin
Clooney is thought to have become interested in the area after visiting the nearby Buckinghamshire village of Fingest while shooting scenes for his film The Monuments Men.
Meanwhile, George will no doubt have his work cut out for him as he is set to film new movie role, Hail Caesar, which is slated for release in 2016.
He is set to play as Baird Whitlock, in the film about a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s, who works to keep the studio's stars in line.
He will star alongside Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

Looks like they're having the ceilings and roof raised so that Amal can wear her hats indoors.

The first pic with the scaffolding is a different house (I think). I haven't seen this one before. Maybe an extra house on the property for employees or something like this. The second pic of the house with the scaffolding that looks to me like the mainhouse. That's what we have seen before. The roof looks the same to me.
I mean this one

I think the first image is the other end of the main house. The two top arched windows and the chimney in between the two but positioned higher on the roof looks the same. At least to me it does. The second image looks like the other end like Nicky said.

I agree DonnaMarie !
It looks like roof work or a repaint of the walls.....
or both.
It's been a bit frosty though lately.

I wonder if this is a re-design or maybe some sort of needed repairs? Are there restrictions on what kind of changes they can make? I can't imagine buying a beautiful historic home and then re-designing it. If it wasn't what you wanted, why buy it?

Re: George Clooney and Amal Renovating Their Home in Berkshire England
This is a Grade II listed building, and they would have had to apply to English Heritage to have their plans approved if they're trying to do anything which would change the nature and the era of the building. They will then have the house inspected as the work progresses and will consult them as they go along

Usually, here in the US, if your home is on the Historic Register you really can't make any significant changes to the exterior of the house. Often you can't change the interior architecture much either. It can be very limiting if you want to modernize - ie. add electricity or modern plumbing.

Yep, same in the UK. You need permission first (if you can get it) to make changes. But, if there are structural issues (think damp, rot, subsidence etc) then you can do things but the house has to look the same afterwards.

Some building where I work needed to be "upgraded" and there was major red tape with the Historical Society. Even the brick had to match in color. Hard to do with 140 year old buildings.

If this is structural, did George buy a lemon? Seems to me he paid enough for this house that he shouldn't have to do major repairs. He seems pretty financially savvy, and she is a lawyer. Maybe the cost of repairs was covered in the purchase agreement. Just wondering.

That's just what I was thinking. You pay double-digit millions for something and then have to fix it up? There must be a reasonable story behind this.

Oh, I think he fell in love with it and money's not an issue. Heard from someone in the area that he'd been out and about in the area looking for a while and they bumped into him early one Sunday morning coming out a newsagent.
The house has many the things he loves - huge grounds loads of trees, water, boathouse, it's discreet, and I'm sure the surveyor would have told them what's involved in bringing it up to scratch and how they want it

Being that it's an old house ( there's an understatement), perhaps renovations to make it more energy efficient ? Or super duper added security to detur peeping toms or press.

I guess they have 'people' to keep an eye on the renovations while they party in Cabo. I didn't even let the contractor do the tuckpointing at my piddly little house without me there to look over his shoulder.

That's an awful lot of scaffolding! They must be doing pretty extensive repairs. 'm guessing G&A won't be spending much time there until the work is done. Imagine waking up to workmen waving through your bedroom windows - not to mention the noise and mess! Renovations/repairs can be a nightmare.

I'd say it's a new roof, which would be quite
normal on a house of that age.
PP......it's a tad chilly, wet and windy
at the moment for sun bathing in the noddy. Lol.

Live in hope,of seeing George in the "noddy". Funny word Joanna .
I would think that they won't be back to the house until the major renovations are done. Who knows what they might be doing to the kitchen and baths. Beautiful home but wasn't crazy about the kitchen. Anyway assuming Amal still has her place in London she could stay there when needed.

George Clooney spends £1.5million on renovations

Associated Press
George and Amal ClooneyGeorge Clooney has spent over £1.5million on renovating his home.
The 'Monuments Men' star has reportedly splashed out the huge sum on he and new wife Amal Alamuddin's property in Oxfordshire, which cost £5million to purchase.
A source shared: "George and Amal have told friends they want this to be their long-term home so it's not surprising to see them pump money into it to make it even more comfortable."
The 53-year-old actor bought the Grade II-listed Aberlash Manor, which has its own island in the River Thames, as a wedding gift to the human rights lawyer.
However, he is now said to have forked out even more cash on improvements including a new roof and extensive work to the four-acre grounds. But the heartthrob is said to be willing to spend whatever it takes to make the property perfect for him and his wife.
The source added to The Sun newspaper: "When you have got their money you can make these sorts of improvements without much thought."
Other additions to the stunning property include extra lighting in the gardens, a fence around the perimeter to deter prying eyes, a panic room and a biometric security system that allows only George and Amal to open the front door. They've reportedly also had a planetarium built into the roof of the historic building so they can gaze at the stars with one another without leaving the house.

I agree Joanna. Sounds like it will be a wonderful home for them to enjoy hopefully for the rest of their lives. From the pictures we've seen when it was on the market its a beautiful and comfortable looking home. Not austentatious but warm and inviting. And the grounds are spectacular. With their busy careers it should be a comforting and serene haven for them. They both have worked hard for what they've achieved but they are still very lucky people. George has said he always reminds himself how lucky he is to be enjoying certain privileges in his life.

George Clooney, Amal Alamuddin Installing Panic Room in Home — Get All the Details on Their High-Security Remodel
Trespassers beware! George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin are renovating their Berkshire, England, mansion — and it’s going to be high-security, a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.
“They are having a panic room installed,” a source tells Us of the couple, who said “I do” in September 2014 and then spent their honeymoon in the 17th-century British manor house. “It’ll be fireproof, bombproof, and attack-resistant.”
As for why the husband and wife feel the need for the added protection? The insider tells Us it’s more for Clooney’s human-rights lawyer love rather than his own rabid fans
“Amal has high-profile clients in controversial cases,” the insider explains of the need for Mrs. Clooney, 37, to protect her files. “She needs to be secure.”
As previously reported by Us, the couple chose to spend their first two weeks as husband and wife at the estate after making it official in a lavish, weekend-long wedding celebration in Venice, Italy.
According to the insider, the manor is set back from the road in a remote countryside and is said to be luxurious, well-decorated, and super-private.

If accurate, it all sounds very well thought out.
They're are other high profile people living
around that area so maybe it's "the norm"
and George may even have followed their
example.
We know only too well that there are
many dangerous individuals in our
world today, unfortunately.

Re: George Clooney and Amal Renovating Their Home in Berkshire England
All the articles are saying they're putting in the panic room because of Amal's high profile controversial cases. No snark intended (really) but doesn't this sort of imply that their marriage has increased her insecurities? If she hadn't married George, would she be building a panic room in her London flat?
Not sure what I'm trying to say here. It just struck me that she'd be working on these cases whether she married him or not, and if she hadn't married him I doubt she'd have a panic room anywhere. Could this be George being over-protective?

Well, I thinkit's possibly a combination of both, Lizzy and Annemarie.
I think His Nibs is being protective. There are going to be times when he's not there so it's understandable. And we know for a fact that there are government ministers in the area so it could be standard practice - or looked at another way it could be safer becos of that!
Or it could be made up, or exaggerated - but they'd be crazy to deny it! I sense a 'No comment' coming along. Wonder who they're quoting - if anybody!
