The White House yesterday declined to comment on whether the US President and his First Lady will attend.
Democrat Clooney, who is due to wed human rights barrister Amal, 36, in September, has hosted several fundraising dinners for President Obama.
He is thought to be planning to join the 2018 race to become governor of California.
A source said: "The Obamas would be the jewels in the crown of a celebrity guest list that already reads like a Who's Who in Hollywood."
Clooney, 53, has already budgeted more than £1million for the wedding at his palatial villa on the shore of Italy's Lake Como. Almost half of that will be spent chartering private jets to fly in guests from all over the world.

Another source close to Clooney said: "Their big day will be refined and sophisticated - unlike other celebrity weddings."

Others on the guest list include Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, his partner Angelina Jolie, U2 frontman Bono, former supermodel Cindy Crawford and Sandra Bullock.

The actor is said to have promised his bride-to-be that they will later throw parties in London, New York and LA for friends unable to travel to Italy.

It is believed the couple are considering the Seychelles for their honeymoon.

Oh there're so many rumours and guesses to keep George and his friends amused now.
