Having been to the four day conference, without doubt she deserves this.........

Angelina Jolie is appointed a Dame for her campaign to end sexual violence

The Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has received an honorary damehood from Britain in recognition of her work highlighting the scourge of sexual violence in war zones.

The surprise award came alongside the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in which 1,149 British residents received honours. Recipients included actors Daniel Day-Lewis and Damian Lewis, author Hilary Mantel, the Wales rugby coach Warren Gatland and Stephen Sutton, the teenager who helped to raise millions of pounds for cancer charities before his death last month.

Ms Jolie’s accolade, which was awarded by the Foreign Office, rounded off a four-day visit to London to co-chair a summit on the problem with William Hague, the Foreign Secretary.

Mr Hague has faced some criticism for devoting so much time to meetings with the American actress, who has been accompanied by her husband Brad Pitt, but the Government insists her involvement has helped to focus attention on rape as a weapon of war.
Ms Jolie, who is a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said: “To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.”

Daniel Day-Lewis, the first man to win three Best Actor statuettes at the Oscars, said he was “entirely amazed and utterly delighted” to become a knight.

The 55-year-old actor, the son of the late Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, has received Oscars for My Left Foot (1990), There Will Be Blood (2008) and Lincoln (2013).

His near-namesake, Damian Lewis, received an OBE. The Old Etonian actor has become an international television star following his portrayal of American servicemen in Band of Brothers and Homeland. He said: “I decided to do the very un-British thing of accepting the compliment.”

The best-selling author Hilary Mantel, who has been made a dame for services to literature, said she saw her honour as "encouragement for the future”. The writer, whose novels about Henry VIII's adviser Thomas Cromwell have been critical and commercial hits, already has a CBE.

Damehoods have also been awarded to the fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, the golfer Laura Davis and the economist Katharine Barker.

The Oscar-winning star Dame Maggie Smith, most recently associated with roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, has been elevated to a Companion of Honour.

A knighthood has been awarded to the man who played a key part in highlighting the appalling treatment of patients at Stafford Hospital. Robert Francis, who wrote two reports on the scandal, was recognised for “services to healthcare and patients”.
Two long-serving Tory MPs, Nicholas Soames, the grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, and the arch-Eurosceptic Bill Cash are knighted, while the Labour MP, Dawn Primarolo, the Deputy Commons speaker, becomes a Dame.

Britain’s Winter Olympics winners were rewarded for their triumphs. Skeleton gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold, who won Britain's first gold medal of this year’s games in Sochi, received an MBE, as did visually-impaired skier Kelly Gallagher and her guide Charlotte Evans, who won Britain’s first ever gold medal in the Winter Paralympics.

An OBE went to Warren Gatland, who has presided over a series of successes for the Welsh national rugby team, while England women’s cricket captain Charlotte Edwards received a CBE.

Stephen Sutton had accepted his MBE before he succumbed to cancer and has been backdated to May 14, when he died.
Stephen, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer aged 15, drew up a 46-item bucket list, including the initial aim of raising £10,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. His appeal has raised more than £4.2m to date.

His mother, Jane, said he thought the award was an “incredible honour” and awesome. She said: “The MBE is a wonderful recognition of his amazing charity work and dedication to Teenage Cancer Trust while battling terminal cancer himself.”

Arise Dame Angelina: After days of hobnobbing at rape summit, starstruck William Hague hands Tinseltown's queen Jolie a gong

  • Foreign Secretary William Hague has made Hollywood actress a dame
  • Miss Jolie, 39, given surprise accolade as part of Queen's birthday honours
  • She and Hague have been working together at a summit on rape in London
  • Hugely unusual for an American citizen to receive an honour from Britain
  • Star of Tomb Raider said the gong meant a 'great deal' last night

Angelina Jolie has been made a dame by William Hague.

The starstruck Foreign Secretary, who has spent most of the week at the Hollywood actress’s side, bestowed the surprise accolade on her as part of the Queen’s birthday honours.

The pair have been working closely together at a summit on rape in London – despite the escalating political and military crises in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine.

Miss Jolie, the 39-year-old star of Tomb Raider, said: ‘It means a great deal to me.’

But eyebrows were raised at the headline-grabbing damehood, which seals two years of growing friendship between the A-list actress and Mr Hague.

As an American citizen, it is highly unusual that Miss Jolie has received an honour from Britain.

Foreigners are occasionally awarded them – there was an honorary knighthood for Bob Geldof, who is Irish, after Live Aid.

Labour MP Paul Flynn said that giving a top award to a celebrity with friends in high places rather than an unsung British hero undermined the credibility of the honours system.

‘The honours system is becoming increasingly discredited and this is another step in that direction,’ he said.

‘Angelina Jolie is doing creditable work but it is ridiculous to honour people who are already over-endowed with privileges and wealth.’

Critics also said damehoods are usually bestowed later in life, after a recipient has earned a lower honour such as an OBE or a CBE.

The honour to Miss Jolie, a UN Special Envoy, recognises her ‘extraordinary’ work to stamp out rape as a weapon in war zones, culminating in a landmark international summit in London to tackle the menace.

Mr Hague said she thoroughly deserved the award because she had ‘made a real difference and achieved lasting results’, referring to the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative the pair launched in 2012.

Miss Jolie said: ‘To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.’

She becomes an honorary Dame Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.

It is awarded to those who ‘render extraordinary or important non-military service in a foreign country’.

It can also be conferred for important or loyal service in relation to foreign and Commonwealth affairs.

Mr Hague and Miss Jolie have made a number of visits to war zones around the world together.

The Foreign Secretary has seemed bewitched by the actress all week, with he and David Cameron looking like awestruck schoolboys when they welcomed her to Britain on Tuesday.

Mr Hague gushed that she was ‘a pleasure to work with’, and said her ‘power to speak to the whole world’ and his ‘levers of decision-making and action’ were a formidable combination.

Whitehall officials confirmed Miss Jolie’s damehood was an honour ‘from the Foreign Office ... for services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end war zone sexual violence’.

The Foreign Office refused to confirm it was Mr Hague who had nominated Miss Jolie.

Yesterday Mr Hague was all smiles as he appeared at the closing session of the summit with Miss Jolie, who wore a grey kimono-style dress.

Her partner Brad Pitt and Mr Hague’s wife Ffion, who usually shuns publicity, were also present.

Later he said he and US Secretary of State John Kerry, who also attended the summit, had ‘obviously’ discussed the deepening conflict in Iraq.

Downing Street defended Mr Hague’s decision to devote a week to accompanying Miss Jolie.

Mr Cameron believed it was the ‘right thing to do’ to carry on with the ‘very important initiative’, said a spokesman, who insisted Mr Hague had not taken his eye off the ball on Iraq.

Dreadful Daily Mail take on what was a groundbreaking and long overdue world conference on a very necessary worldwide subject. A supreme effort on her part to pull all parties to the table to bring together a protocol.

Trivialising it indicates that the writer, or 'journalist' had no idea what he/she were talking about and just hoped for a by line and a sensational headline.........

Maybe this should go in the chit-chat section, but could the little girl in these pix be Maddox's English friend?

Home is where the heart is: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are accompanied by Zahara and Maddox as they return to LA after sexual violence summit

She's spent the week putting her worldwide super-stardom to good use by appearing at a sexual violence summit in London for the past week.

And Angelina Jolie returned to Los Angeles an honorary dame as she jetted into LAX Airport on Saturday after having her 'extraordinary' work formally recognised as part of Queen Elizabeth II's birthday honours.

The 39-year-old actress was spotted arriving back on home turf alongside her doting fiance, Brad Pitt, and two of their children, Maddox, 12, and Zahara, nine, after a busy week under the spotlight of the world's media.

Looking cool, calm and collected as she breezed through the arrivals terminal, the Maleficent star would have no doubt been looking forward to a few home comforts as the Jolie-Pitts made the way back to their California property.

Angelina kept a low-key look for her first outing after the news of her honorary damehood as she arrived at LAX with Brad and her brood.

The 39-year-old screen star was kitted out in an all-black ensemble as she made her way out of the car and carried some of her belongings into the London airport earlier on Saturday morning.

She may have a sketchy past but she's reinvented her life and has done something positive with her celebrity.

Angeline has become an honorary Dame but she can't call herself a Dame because she not a British citizen. Then what is the point of making her a Dame in the first place?!

So now that George is living in Sonning, which is almost confirmed right?, then maybee he could be knighted too. Sir George Clooney? And if he becomes an English citizen then he could use the title. Of course he will also have to pay English taxes. But that might be worth the Sir.
