George Clooney may be off-limits now that he's engaged but he's still being sought after by women, as director Jodie Foster is courting the Oscar winner to star in her financial drama “Money Monster,” multiple individuals familiar with the project have toldTheWrap.
Written by Alan DiFiore (“Grimm”) and Jim Kouf (“National Treasure”) as well as Jamie Linden (“We Are Marshall”), the story follows a TV personality whose insider trading tips have made him the money guru of Wall Street. When a viewer who lost all of his family's money on a bad tip from the money expert decides to hold him hostage on air, ratings soar as the entire country tunes in to this media frenzy.
Clooney is in early talks to star and should a deal close, the project would find him reteaming with producer Daniel Dubiecki, who received an Oscar nomination for “Up in the Air.”

“This story is so premature, I would be embarrassed as a journalist to even print it,” Clooney's publicist Stan Rosenfield told TheWrap, insisting that there was no deal in place yet. Representatives for Foster and Dubiecki had no comment.

Lara Alameddine will also produce for Dubiecki's Allegiance Theater, whose Tim Crane will executive produce with Stuart Ford of IM Global, the company that developed the project and will likely remain involved in some capacity.

“Money Monster” is already being shopped to high-end financiers, none of whom would discuss the potentially potent package on the record with TheWrap. Should Clooney prove unavailable, the project is expected to attract other A-list actors.

That was a big studio movie with a long shoot, and an indie film like “Money Monster” would represent a shorter commitment for Clooney, who is extremely busy on the producing side. With his Smokehouse partner Grant Heslov, Clooney has been developing ”Our Brand Is Crisis,” “The Yankee Comandante,” “Coronado High” and another “Monster” movie, “The Monster of Florence.” He's repped by CAA and attorney Michael Adler.

Foster, who boarded the project in October 2012, most recently directed “The Beaver” starring Mel Gibson. Her previous credits include “Home for the Holidays” and “Little Man Tate.” Earlier Thursday, USA announced that Foster would executive produce its pilot “Brand.” She's repped by UTA for directing.

No deal in place "yet" so it's not so much that he denied it but that there is no deal!

To me it sounds like someone has some wishful thinking that George would be attached to star and might be leaking in the hopes of moving George's decision peeps along!

Hard to say anything, but "money monster" title kind of puts me off.
I have no idea what it´s about so… maybe it´s brilliant.

I think she is a good actress, or was or… I don´t know.

Interesting to see the list of projects he and Grant are producing. If he's producing "Monster of Florence" I wonder if he'll be acting in it, too? I hope so. The four projects they list seem to have been in development for a long time. I hope his marriage doesn't slow them down even more.

About a year-and-a-half ago, it was announced that Jodie Foster was going to direct a financial world drama called "Money Monster" — and then, that was pretty much the last we ever heard of it. But we'd wager that the success of "The Wolf Of Wall Street" has made the genre temporarily cool, especially if it has handsome men in the lead doing bad things.

And so, The Wrap is putting the cart before the horse and reporting that George Clooney is in early talks for the film. How real is this? “This story is so premature, I would be embarrassed as a journalist to even print it,” his rep told the site flat out. So, yeah.... And really, with Clooney shepherding a small flock of projects — both as directing and starring vehicles — we'd wager the gig would have to be really good for him to take a detour. But admittedly, on paper, this does sound decent.

Penned by Alan DiFiore ("Grimm") and Jim Kouf ("National Treasure"), the story follows Lee Cates, a TV money guru who gets taken hostage on air by Kyle, an ordinary man who lost all his money thanks to a bad recommendation from Lee. And ratings soar as a result.

Sounds decent enough, but financing still has to come together (though we'd wager Clooney's name would be a big asset in that happening) and again, it seems like he's a long way from signing anything. So something to think about for now, and at any rate, it confirms "Money Monster" is still very much in the works.

TriStar beat out Focus Features for the film with its generous offer to finance “Money Monster” for $30 million. Open Road was also in the mix for the hot title.


As TheWrap first reported, much to his publicist's chagrin (don't worry, we still love you Stan!), Clooney will star as a TV personality whose insider trading tips have made him the money guru of Wall Street. When a viewer who lost all of his family's money on a bad tip from the money expert decides to hold him hostage on air, ratings soar as the entire country tunes in to this media frenzy.
Written by Alan DiFiore and Jim Kouf as well as Jamie Linden, the project reunites Clooney with Daniel Dubiecki (“Up in the Air”), who's producing via The Allegiance Theater along with Lara Alameddine, Clooney and his Smokehouse partner Grant Heslov. Allegiance's Tim Crane will executive produce with Stuart Ford of IM Global, the company that originally developed the project.


Production will begin next spring, as Clooney will shoot the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” first.

For those who may have been following the George/Loeb thread after the Nikke Finke article: Deadline is the company from which Finke was (wrongfully, IMO) fired and with whom she is still fighting. It was publicly ugly. Anyway, Deadline favors Sony in most of its reporting about the studios, whether the studio is doing well or not. Finke would probably have a completely different take on that last paragraph. I think Finke's article prompted the "Much is being written about Sony Pictures..." line.

Seems kinda shitty that the WOMAN WHO STARTED DEADLINE ends up being fired from it.

That's what happens when you bring in someone else - here she probably thought - oh good someone to help with financing and providing extra reporters and then she gets fired from something SHE started.

And it's me - if Hollywood Reporter is reporting it then its happening (unless some monkey wrench gets thrown in the deal - which could happen with any film).

Yep. She was the innovator, and she brought in a team that she thought would not only take her to the next level, but would have her back. She got to the next level thanks to her own hard work and someone else's money, but the deal she struck didn't cover her back, and they stabbed her in it.

But, playing devil's advocate, a deal is a deal. Like you said, shitty.

Great to hear it's confirmed. Sounds a very interesting story. Don't know if we could see three films starring George Clooney getting released next year!Would be a BIG year for him!
Although I'm pretty sure I will only see Tomorrowland in theaters here in my country as the other two aren't tent poles and we only introduce about 40 big foreign films a year to cinema.

Tom Rothman’s Tristar Productions has taken a major project off the independent table and acquired worldwide rights to the thriller in which Jodie Foster will direct George Clooney.

Jamie Linden wrote the screenplay about a broadcaster caught in a tangle of high finance lies after he is held at gunpoint live on air.

The project had been set up at IM Global before CEO Stuard Ford put it into turnaround.

Alan DiFore and Jim Kouf wrote an earlier draft of the script. Sources in the business have drawn parallels with Sidney Lumet’s 1976 drama Network.

Dan Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine developed the project with Foster and will produce together with Clooney and his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov.

Principal photography is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2015.

“It is impossible to resist saying that we at TriStar hit the talent jackpot today,” said TriStar Productions chairman Tom Rothman.

This has a 'made for George and Grant' look all over it doesn't it?. They both loved 'Network' with Peter Finch, and the producers, Dan Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine(!) worked on 'Up In the Air'.

Wonder if we'll see Amal's name as a producer on the credits one day?

Hey I really liked the plot but the name "Money Monster" always seemed a bit funny to me...now it makes sense if that's for the program...can't wait to see this one!
And Jodie Foster could play the woman producer in the film. We just need to find someone capable of "taking hostage of" Mr. Clooney!

Nicky the film is about Wall Street so it will likely be shot in NY.

They'll probably shoot exteriors in NY or Toronto and the rest of it in LA - wherever it's cheapest and they can get the best deal.

Sounds like a really great film, but I can honestly do without the self-righteous son of a newsman lecturing on the state of journalism press tour that is certain to follow.

Frankly I have quite a good feeling about this and this role just seems suits George so well that it could bring him that third Oscar!

I'm interested to see what would be the closest George has played to a villain. I've always thought he'd make an excellent bad guy, since it's so against type for him.

Now, do we have suggestions for who should play the hostage-taker? If we're drawing from the usual crew, I'd go with Matt Damon. Sam Rockwell would also be very good, I think.

I think this role may be more double sided. He could be digging some dirt in the business to save his life, but he would still be a bad guy behind some issues.
Recently our country's most internationally prestigious financial TV host-who has interviewed hundreds of most powerful and famous individuals on the planet and been right on his career prime and got millions fans around China- Rui Chenggang just got arrested by the authority. It was roumored that he helped his family use some giant PR company to profit from those high profile interviews illegally and there were all kinds of commercial corruptions around him and his leader.
That was horrible news. A total shock. His image has always been that positive elite and an iconic good example for the new generation. I never thought a host with his power and fame could break the law one day.
George's role might have something in common with him.

I think George could easily stretch in both roles.....Hostage......or Hostage Taker..... Sign of how good you are, when you could be up for, and effortlessly portray both.

I don't think they've cast the role of 'Kyle,' the hostage taker. This deal came together very quickly, as far as these things go. TriStar got it based on Foster being attached and the producers getting an LOI (letter of intent -- or interest --) from George's reps, if what I'm hearing is true. (Probably what drove Stan crazy. George wasn't officially attached.) With those two and this story, which will play well internationally, they will have no problems with pre-sales, and this movie might be paid for before they turn the cameras on.

Clive Owen can portray a charismatic baddy well enough and it would be good to see Jodie on screen
as the producer of the TV show.
But maybe as the director she wouldn't want dual roles in her film.

Way2Old - hope you're right about this one. He needs a moneymaker. Don't know why, but I keep seeing John Goodman as Kyle (he does a great scary bad guy) - if not him, then someone with that same middle aged/middle class persona.
I know Matt Damon is getting to that age, but to me he's too young looking - like the driver in "The Good German" (sorry, senior moment - can't remember the actor's name). His performance was good, but his baby face was distracting.(Ok, just checked - it was Tobey Maguire)

The trouble for me would be I that I could never
imagine Matt as a baddy !    

See, I'm thinking of the hostage-taker as the sympathetic one here. I swear I'm not a sociopath siding with a potential murderer (although that's what a sociopath would say, isn't it?) BUT, I'm thinking of George's character as being like Jim Cramer, who had a similar experience in terms of being a big insider-stock-tips guy on CNBC here in the states, and when it all went belly-up, got TONS of flack because he was telling people to buy Bear Stearns stock literally DAYS before the stock crashed.  People lost everything on that guy.  (Google Jon Stewart/Jim Cramer for a good summary.  The Daily Show did an amazing take down of the guy - apparently Jon Stewart's mother lost all her savings on his tips.)

Anyway, I see that character as the bad guy and the guy who lost everything (although making a poor life choice with the hostage-taking and murder threats, I'll grant you) as the sympathetic character.  I can absolutely see Matt Damon playing that sort of desperate everyman at the end of his rope. Although now that Joh  Goodman is on the table, that's the only person I want to see do it.

Not to quibble too much, but I would like George to take on a role we think doesn't suit him and then win an Oscar. Might quiet some of those who question his acting chops and/or say he mostly plays a certain type.

I think the people who still make that "he always plays the same character" accusation haven't been paying attention for the last 6-8 years.  Take out the Ocean's films, and even Up in the Air since that character could be argued is pretty close to George himself, and you have Syriana, The Descendants, Michael Clayton, even Monuments Men.  Those are pretty varied and definitely not the "I'm charming, gorgeous, and have the world on a string" characters he played early on.  He's been broadening his horizons for a while.  Would still like to see him play a straight up psycho though.  

Ditto Missa when I said about it suits him, it's more like I think that character has more depths and layers in it, and I could see George pull all that off.

Missa - Straight up psycho? Shame on you!   Didn't you see From Dusk Til Dawn? You can't get much more psycho than that (except for the Quentin Tarantino part). And George was GREAT in it! If you haven't seen it, you really should - it's a hoot!

BTW, as far as I know John Goodman isn't attached to "Money Monster". I was just suggesting him as a possibility.

Lizzy - 20 years is too long to go between playing psychos, he's due for another one. He's pretty good in FDTD, but he's got too many of his old tics, it's distracting now that he's grown our of them.

I know John Goodman isn't officially attached, but it's a great idea, and if Jodie knows what's up she'll be checking here for suggestions.

Just checked the IMBD page for Money Monster. No other cast listed except for George, but he and Grant are also listed as producers. If it doesn't get him an acting Oscar it could get him one for producing.

Sometimes actors make great directors. Ron Howard, Kevin Costner, George Clooney and Jodie Foster can all attest to that fact, as they've all directed and/or starred in films that would go on to become Academy Award nominees, if not winners. An actor being directed by another actor is pretty special, and can lead to some really great work. But an actor/director supervising someone else who occupies that rarified air? That could be something to behold, especially considering the last two names on the above list are collaborating on an extremely timely project that screams awards season.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the pair of Academy Award winners are pairing up to make the film Money Monster, with Foster directing and Clooney starring as Lee Gates - a TV stock analyst who is taken hostage under dire circumstances and killer ratings. His captor lost all of their money thanks to a bad investment tip that Gates provided on his show. The gunman demands that the host make his stock jump 24 points before the closing bell, and in the process reveals some very big secrets about the company in question.

There are parallels that can be made between Money Monster and classic thrillers like Dog Day Afternoon and Network, but another movie came to mind when I read up on this film is Joel Schumacher'sPhone Booth. The film already has the claustrophobic atmosphere, and the gasbag who's always "in control" being turned into the one who's being controlled. All that's missing is Kiefer Sutherland as the guy holding George Clooney hostage. (Note to Jodie Foster: PLEASE cast Kiefer Sutherland!) If this film can nail the satirically dark tone of Network and marry it with the tension of Phone Booth, I honestly think we'd have a hell of a flick on our hands.

Considering Jodie Foster has been directing episodes of Netflix originals like Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards, it's safe to say that she's far from rusty when it comes to her directing skills. However, the last feature film she directed was the Mel Gibson starring puppet comedy The Beaver, which didn't seem to be that good. Or at least it wasn't a good enough movie to help people overlook Gibson's then recent spate of bad behavior. Regardless, it'll be interesting to see Jodie Foster and George Clooney working together as director and actor, respectively.

Money Monster is looking to start filming at the beginning of 2015, which means we could be looking at a prestige friendly release date in the Fall of that year. Seriously, call Kiefer guys!

‘Unbroken’ Star Jack O’Connell and Julia Roberts Join George Clooney in ‘Money Monster’

Jack O’Connell and Julia Roberts are in negotiations to co-star with George Clooney in TriStar Pictures’ “Money Monster.”
Jodie Foster is directing, with Tom Rothman’s TriStar financing the pic.
Clooney stars as Lee Gates, a bombastic television stock huckster, whose program (titled “Money Monster”) and life are taken hostage by an outraged gunman (O’Connell). As the world watches, Gates must stay alive and uncover the truth behind a tangle of big money lies, with help from the show’s producer (Roberts). “Money Monster” unfolds in near real time.
Producers are The Allegiance Theater’s Daniel Dubiecki, Lara Alameddine and Smokehouse’s Clooney and Grant Heslov. Jamie Linden penned the script; Alan DiFore and Jim Kouf wrote the original draft of the script. Production will begin in the spring.
This marks a reteaming of Roberts and Clooney, who worked together on the “Ocean’s Eleven” films.
Studios have been circling O’Connell ever since the young British actor landed the role of Louis Zamperini in Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken,” which bows this Christmas. Universal has already locked him in for their MI6 origin tale “Section 6,” and the actor is also expected to star in “Tulip Fever.”
Roberts has a handful projects in development including a remake of “The Secret in Their Eyes.”
Besides “Money Monster,” Rothman’s TriStar continues to line up a healthy slate that includes “The Walk,” directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Joseph Gordon Levitt; “Ricki and the Flash,” which stars Meryl Streep with Jonathan Demme directing; an untitled comedy by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo; and an adaptation of Alan Bennett’s “The Lady In The Van ” with Maggie Smith.
O’Connell and Roberts are repped by CAA.

Looks like he likes to work with Julia and Sandra only for his future Projects LOL....

Would be nice to see him with Julia on Screen again but I must say I would like to see him with different female actors and not always the same people.....But well....I#m sure it will be good with Julia too

Haven't seen anything with Jack O'Connell before. Anybody else familiar with him? Looks like he's got a major part in this movie.

Jack O'Connell is the leading man in Angelina Jolie's Unbroken. A Brit who was seen in This Is England and Skins on tv here. Seems to be having a meteoric rise for a guy of 24
