Re: AOC Discussion for those who have seen it. SPOILER ALERT
Ok so I'll start.
I went to a screening last night of the film in West Hollywood and the screenwriter, Tracy Letts was there afterward for a Q&A.
Unfortunately, I was so tired from a very long and busy two days that I did not stay long for his Q&A.

- Spoiler:
- Generally my impression of the film was that it was uneven for me. I never really cared about the characters so I never got wrapped up in their stories. About the only character I felt any empathy for was Ivy, the sister who stayed and in the end resented it. I also felt for her predicament - she was nearly 50 and thought she had finally found a man with whom she could live the rest of her life. The twist (which I will not divulge) made me really sad for her character - she was reminded that she had again pulled the short stick in life.
But the rest of the characters - really found nothing of interest in any of them. Meryl seemed to be (I know I'll be stricken down for this) overacting. And Julia, her stoic expressions - perhaps the character's true demeanor - made me feel that perhaps whatever life threw at her she deserved.
So would I recommend the film? Wow this is a tough one. There are some funny moments, but not many and the rest I just felt like the mood of the film I guess - it was dark and worse - it was boring

OK I watched the film.
I like the way Meryl played the role. She was really good. Very depressing ending.
I didn't like Julia's role. She played it a bit too harsh, too mean for me.
In general the film is too dark for me. Makes you depressed. Kind of
Not sure Lorna if I agree with you that Maryl was overacting or she was just too good. mmhh could be both...

Gosh, I FINALLY got to see the film. Thought it was ok, but not sure what all the fuss was about. Loved Meryl and Julia, in fact, loved all of the cast except (forgive me, Joanna) Benedict Cumberbatch who just seemed really shaky on his accent.
I know what you guys mean about Meryl overacting because at first I was a bit 'hmmmm' about her but then she took the wig off and I suddenly realised that the character she was playing was acting (if that makes sense) and wow, was she ever good!

Katie I forgive you....as it's your Birthday week.
I haven't seen it yet.
Recently Benedict has been the subject of a lot fun because he did a voice over on a DvD about oceans
and he can't say Penguins....it keeps coming out as Penwins.
But he's taken all the stick with good humour,
of course. LOL.
