Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” is expected to cross the $500 million mark globally on Saturday, becoming one of the most successful sci-fi movies of all-time and the biggest box office hit of both Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s careers.
The 3D sci-fi smash, which is being tipped for a run at the Oscars, has earned a boffo $235.9 million domestically and over $261 million overseas. Last month, “Gravity” became the highest-grossing live-action feature in October history with over $400 million worldwide.
Bullock’s previous highest-grossing film was “Speed” ($350.2 million) while Clooney’s benchmark was “Ocean’s Eleven” ($450.6 million).
“We know what we have here,” Warner Bros distribution president Dan Fellman recently told Variety. “This is a phenomenon where people are asking friends and family not only if they’ve seen the film, but where.”
The $100 million space odyssey largely benefitted from premium 3D and imax ticket prices as well as repeat viewings.
Greg Foster, chairman of Imax, called “Gravity” an “early Christmas resent” for studios and theatrical exhibitors. “The habit of going to the movies is created when you have a great experience,” he said.
Co-financed by Warner Bros. and RatPac Dune Entertainment, “Gravity” is expected to remain in theaters through Thanksgiving.

Wow....I know it is considered Science Fiction but it isn't the typical SF type of story....I guess Alfonso can write his ticket now...wonder what his next project will be.

I was really surprised yesterday, talking to two 12 year old girls who were off to see Gravity. I just didn't think it would be their thing.... So even the Hannah Montana generation are going ... Boys I could understand, but to see two over excited wee girls was charming ...

And on that subject [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and a chap called Tony Hetherington has a story entitled, I think, George Clooney and the horror movie offer, about somebody looking for investment in a film, and the potential sign-ups are Our Hero, DeCapprio, Hanks etc......
Sounds like a maybe to me, but interesting how all this stuff gets off the ground

Just a PS, to my earlier post above...
Bumped into same two girls this morning.... So I asked how did they like Gravity ?
They replied that they have to see it AGAIN... because one got a lot more out of it than the other, so they will go again, I said why not wait for dvd ...Ooh no you have to see it 3D! They also said while they wait they are going to "read the book" .... When I told them there was no book, they were horrified! (This knowledge upped my street cred )
Maybe another revenue stream for Mr Couron ?

Didn't George replace another actor? Or was that just something my brain made up?
But if so, do you think that other actor is kicking himself? Especially if back end and DVD points were offered?
Hmmm

I think initially Alfonso wanted Angelina and Robert Downey Jr. They both declined, so Sandra and George said "yup" all the way to the bank!!

I read Angelina Jolie fired her manager in part because he told her to turn down the role in "Gravity". I bet she's kicking herself for listening to him - and I bet she'd really like to kick him! - I'm glad he gave her that advice, though, because I don't think she'd have been anywhere near as good in the role. Sandra Bullock rocked that part!

Money is great but it is also the gauge many use to judge a movie so that is even better. I truly how George did his usual and took little up front, and the rest at the end.Carla97 wrote:Money money money

Gravity is now No. 90 in all time world wide box office according to box office mojo. That's as of Nov 27 2013. Can't wait to see where it ends up.

It combines so many universal factors that appeal:
They all deserve Academy Award nominations for this.
- Spoiler:
- And of course the massive Chinese, Indian & Russian markets, apart from the American one.
A little for everyone.
Above all, panoramic visual imagery.
Quest for survival.
Hope.
Humor. If only you could hear the laughter in the theater when Kowalski reappeared in the Soyuz...even as an apparition. Clooney's character provided the comical relief from that escalating tension. Gave Stone the strength to survive.

Now it's positioned at 77 highest grossing films of all time worldwide, one week later.
The domestic market slid up from 80 to 79.
At this rate, it'll probably end up Top 50 at least.
This reflects Box Office figures.
It's one to own on dvd too.
Imagine the figures in those sales.
