GRAVITY

As a movie lover, I'd like as many people as possible can dsifrutar of all those great movies that have been filmed over its history. This has been one of the reasons for creating this blog you are reading right now. However, I am realistic and know that many of the films of which I speak are virtually unknown to the general public implies multiple and varied reasons that now I will not get to appreciate (not this time). So when I saw a few days ago in a cinema "Gravity" (2013, Alfonso Cuarón) felt double satisfaction. On the one hand I enjoy a movie that at once is a huge visual spectacle and get you hooked to your seat for all your footage as few have gotten lately.

Moreover, the fact that it was a Hollywood production starring two actors known to the public, such as George Clooney and Sandra Bullock will do, helped by word of mouth that this film to be seen by many people in worldwide.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The argument is as follows: During a routine mission a satellite repair American astronauts Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) and Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) are attacked, for their work in outer space, by a discharge of produced space junk voluntary detonation of a Russian satellite. This causes your ship remains broken and forced to find a way to survive in space, looking for another space station shelter.

No doubt the first thing that catches the attention of the film is its visual bill, which is simply stunning, supported by a technique of shooting absolutely wonderful and totally inexplicable technological quality (at least for me). The feel of the film the viewer, to be accompanying the astronauts on their space journey, is as realistic as I can enjoy a movie theater in my life (including special sessions are usually displayed in parks attractions).

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The film begins with a lengthy sequence shot already puts us in a position to immediately rolled so that the camera moves as if held by another astronaut who were also on a space walk on the outside of the ship. Thus, the feeling of weightlessness is complete and we get closer and closer to the action you see on the screen. This opening sequence alone already justifies the price of admission and is the best of the film, though not the only highlight of it.

Co-written by director Alfonso Cuarón and his brother Jonas, is very simple, to develop in a linear fashion. However, the viewer gets caught doing to remain clinging to the chair over scarce ninety minutes duration. The fact that the film barely reach half the time and helps the emotion does not falter at any time and the writers (thank heaven be thanked) have saved the feared (and used) own twists of Hollywood .

As I said before, the feeling of immersion in the story is complete, so that the camera performs throughout the story like a symbiont of the main characters accompanying them at all times during their fight for survival. This means we always onscreen at one or both protagonists, so that their work is very important for the proper development of the film. This aspect is where I had more doubts before seeing the film, and while I believe that neither deserves major awards for his performance, both George Clooney and Sandra Bullock do a good job, especially Sandra Bullock in the that can be his best performance to date.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
On the other hand, is in the character played by Sandra Bullock one fondness towards oblivion, but there is also a desire to return home lost (accidentally), reflected in the scene where he gets on one of the space stations and there sheds his astronaut suit and is momentarily in a very relaxed, almost in a fetal position.

The work of director Alfonso Cuarón is at its finest for having achieved combine perfectly in the movie the great spectacle that is both visually and technically, to make a "small" film in the sense of being a simple story, filmed with personality and without losing his touch authorial amid absolutely absorbing visual effects present in the film.

With all this, we can say that this is a great movie for the first time in a long time in American cinema, meeting a great show with a coherent script and outstanding leadership provided. No doubt, this is one of the most outstanding films that Hollywood has porducido in this century.

In closing I just want to make a recommendation. Is this a movie you must see in movies and in 3D, in any other format that you can watch movies (television, computers, ipads, etc..) Loses much of its appeal which is, I repeat again, its visual bill which, on the big screen of a movie theater and accompanied by three-dimensional format, impresses in a superlative way. That's it, you enjoy it.

A week later...

Almost $400,000,000!
#198 All time highest grossing films worldwide.
#124 US highest grossing.

George's highest so far has been Ocean's 11 at #143 worldwide rank.
What's the bet Gravity passes that in a week, after UK release?

It'll make Top 100 in no time.
Rocketing up the charts. Very Happy

Post by Butterfly Sun 03 Nov 2013, 21:13

I watched Gravity two days ago (sorry George for being so late Embarassed , but I honestly did not have time to see it earlier).

I love space and I am glad that GC did a movie like this. However, being a fan of Star Trek (only The Next Generation with Jean Luc Picard Cool ), the technology in Gravity seemed so outdated Rolling Eyes    Ok, ok, I know this is realistic and not SF. This is just my naive first impression.Wink

Secondly, what I obviously did not like about the movie is: I did not see much of George Sad

Thirdly, I loved the message of the movie. I think it was well presented through dialogues between George and Sandra, and her life story. We should not feel down or get depressed because of our failures, mistakes or unfortune. Instead, we should always seek life and light in the darkness. If I remember correctly, I think Sandra said sth like:"No regrets for trying".
I think that George symbolises life in a movie.

Also, I must say that Sandra looks great, like she is 20 not 50. Very Happy I would like to read somewhere her diet and fitness regime.

What do you guys think about the movie?

I saw Gravity yesterday and thought it was brilliant
visually. Sandra's acting was wonderful....such fear in her eyes at times.
I loved the music too and the last ten minutes or so was the most moving ending I've ever seen in a film. Then the combination of the visuals and the music was totally overwhelming and brought tears.

The sound system wasn't so good at the cinema so I didn't pick up on the scene between them both.
I'll be waiting for my Bluray copy when I can watch it again with sub titles ! Lol

I hope it gets some well deserved recognition during
the awards season.

An afterthought....I can now understand why the journalist asked "What was it like filming in space ?" At times it looked so real and just like the documentary's I've seen
filmed there !

GRAVITY Empty Gravity

Post by fluffy Thu 14 Nov 2013, 13:45

I too saw the film last Friday when it came out over here. It was in 3D with a big screen for max effect. Luckily because of the time of day there wasn't that many people around to disturb the ambiance, and popcorn rustlers were soon silenced as they fogot to eat what they had bought!

The film - loved the opening with George just flying around doing nothing particular. So George!!! They played country music while GC was flying around, his choice maybe?? Did anyone ask that question?! In actual fact GC was on screen a good 3/4 of the film time, something I was worried about, given that there was only 2 of them really as stars. It was nice to hear Ed Harris as mission control (he's cute too!). I did find the music a little too loud in places so some of the dialogue couldn't be heard, aslo when the 3D was "applied", by spinning so much, it did go a bit blurry for me trying to take everything in, they could have slowed it down just a tad. But 3D George is COOL!!!! comin atcha! I wasn't affected by the motion. Loved the Looney Tunes Martian (the one that says you make me mad!), just floating by, (I'm sure GC had something to do with that??!). I can also see how Georgie must have been in pain in that suit given how restrictive neck movements are, not being able to look up only with your eyes. But technically, I think everything was there. Loved the "scene GC wrote", I won't spoil it for others but it's very funny and does make you think eh???? You have to see it on a big screen in 3D to appreciate the small things like Sandys tears floating towards you, and the odd bolt just missing your head!!

Well done to Alfonso, and lets hope it does bring forth awards, if it doesn't then they sure missed a trick! cheers

Sure, why not? Maybe post a 'spoiler' alert for those who don't want to see it.

======================

I'm going to buck the trend here and say that I think he was miscast in the film. I'm not sure what he was supposed to bring the the role, but he specialises in playing such lightweight jokey characters most of the time that it was hard to take his lightweight jokey astronaut seriously.

It probably was, but because he's done so many similar characters before, I found him to be unbelievable: it was like "George Clooney in space" rather than "jokey astronaut in space". If George ever went into space, that's exactly what I think he'd be like (except, hopefully, minus the country music) so it didn't feel like he was creating a character. I think they should have got an actor without that baggage to play the role.

Post by What Would He Say Wed 20 Nov 2013, 11:21

Spoiler alert...

Hmmm, the bit when he comes back onto the Chinese (?) spaces station missed the ummmm mystical element, but surely thats the directors job.  George, I think did an excellent job .......but it has to be the directors job to get the atmosphere right.

I liked that he was "jocular", especially in that scene. It set's it apart from Alien and other horror genre, which probably accounts for it's outstanding success.
but it could have done with better more atmospheric lighting in that scene.  George's tone was perfect... it was director or whoever is in charge of "atmosphere" that slightly missed a trick. But I suppose they were so wrapped in the BIGGER atmosphere of space they didn't appreciate that this scene would help catapult it over $500K mark, grab the imagination of the audience and make it a game changer.

Almost perfect is good enough....obviously
