United States and Japan sending aid to Sudan for floods

Sudan: International Assistance Beginning to Arrive for Sudan

The United States and Japan said on Monday that they are providing relief supplies to help alleviate suffering of people affected by the floods that hit different areas of Sudan amid heightened fears over forecasts projecting more rainfall in the next couple of days.

Since the beginning of the month, heavy rainfall and resultant flash flooding has now affected nearly 150,000 people across eight states in Sudan, including more than 84,000 in Khartoum.

The Sudanese Red Crescent Society and the Commission for Voluntary and Humanitarian Work estimated last week that 98,500 people had been affected in the first few days of August, but since then the numbers have continued to rise.

The heavy rains and floods that hit different areas in Sudan in the past few days have led to the death of at least 60 people and injured dozens besides destroying thousands of homes and public infrastructures.

The Japanese ambassador who extended condolence and sympathy to those suffering said hundreds of thousands of people are still in urgent need of essentials such as food, water, and tents.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that it was also providing, together with its partners, a range of emergency relief items, and that other emergency support was currently being mobilized for food, shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene and health services.

The Emir of Qatar has sent two planes loaded with 80 tonnes of urgent relief supplies to help counter the effects of the heavy rains and floods.

Sudan's Minister of Defence has issued a directive asking all military personnel in the Sudan Armed Forces to offer support for those affected and ordered provision of all possible assistance.

On Monday, the Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti chaired a meeting to consider how to obtain further foreign assistance which is said to be meager compared to the levels of help provided by the international community during the 1988 floods.

Sudan: UN and Partners Coordinate Aid for 150,000 People Affected By Flooding

United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners are coordinating closely with the Government of Sudan to assist close to 150,000 people get food, water and shelter following heavy rains that began early this month.

"More rains are expected in the coming days and the estimated number of affected people is likely to rise further as rains continue and as more information becomes available," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

At least 26,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed, OCHA said, noting initial estimates of the damage in the eight affected states.

The UN and its partners have provided a range of emergency relief items, including tents, plastic sheeting, blankets, water cans, buckets and mosquito nets from its emergency stockpiles in Khartoum state. They also provided mobile clinics, drinking water, and sanitation services.

"Other emergency support is currently being mobilized, particularly food, shelter, water, sanitation, hygiene and health services," OCHA said.

Over 150,000 people have already been affected by the flooding, according to the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, the Khartoum State Commission for Voluntary and Humanitarian Work, the Government's Humanitarian Aid Commission and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), among other sources.

OCHA stressed that the UN and its partners remain committed to assisting flood-affected communities and supporting the Government's relief efforts throughout the country.

The sad thing is that at this point that is a mere drop in the bucket at this point. Because they are all so messes up because they are stretched so thin because of all the fight. The camps are full and have no supplies to begin with. There is diseases getting a hold on the refugees from lack of sanitary water and conditions. They also need to send military to protect the people and the supplies from the rebels, they steal everything.

It is such a sad situation.
