First set pics of Tomorrowland bring back the world of yesterday

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The images, taken by photographer Bob Glassford for VCF, show (we're assuming) the early world of George Clooney's movie. Allegedly about "a teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth." Ha. This is still is pretty confusing. Here's what Glassford had to deduce about that site:

Based on the what has been prepped so far, it looks like this scene will be set in 1964 at the New York World’s Fair. The set includes various landscaping elements, retro-looking food booths, and a giant billboard advertising “Sinclair Dinoland” which was a feature attraction at the '64-'65 New York World’s Fair. A medium-sized inflatable green screen was placed at the far end of the set, but not blown up yet.

Tomorrowland will hit theaters in late 2014; should be interesting to see what the alternate dimension looks like — unless it's all greenscreen, and we have to wait until the release.

The Vancouver set of Tomorrowland is under construction, while the viral campaign for The Optimistic concludes his journey into Walt's Haunts and sowing different secret messages which should lead to a surprise at the D23 Expo ...

Thursday, August 8 will begin in Vancouver filming the sci-fi film Tomorrowland . We should wait another few days for the arrival of  George Clooney and Hugh Laurie , but in the meantime have already appeared online the first pictures taken on the set near the campus of British Columbia (UBC), near the end of Main Mall.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It seems that the very first scenes to be filmed on the set has to do with the famous World 'Fair held in New York from 1964 to 1965.

Who is following us with the viral campaign, here and here , you can read what happened up to this point, he knows that the World's Fair of 1964/65 plays a very important part in the history of the virus, and the film. We also note the presence of Dinoland, quoted in the secret message of the table of Walt Disney and the Unisphere, which we are curious to know if it will be completely rebuilt or made of CGI.

Meanwhile, the viral campaign through the game The Optimistic, continues to proceed. There were still two stops in the hunt for clues based on the map of Wallace. On Sunday there was a special opening of Walt Disney's Carolwood barn , a barn used by Walt as a workshop for miniature and toy trains, now the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum , which Walt helped to found.

After taking a picture with the flash inside the cab Redlaw 1 , appeared a new secret message that pointed to the telegraph to New Orleans Square in Disneyland .

Where players were able to hear this message:

Normally this is done listen to the speech of Walt made on the opening day of Disneyland, instead in its place was put this new message in morse code:
. -. . - .. -. -. -. / ... -. -. .. . -. - / -. - .... . -. ... / - .. -. . / ----. - .... - .... /. -. - .. / - .. -. -. / -. . . - / .. -. - .. .. -. -. -. . /. -. - .. - ...

"Welcome to the 1966 members of society and to our new recruit RDB".

But who is RDB ? The most popular hypothesis is the science fiction writer Ray Bradbury , a frequent collaborator in future designs of Disney. As for now, we currently have no idea what it could refer. At this point, the last place in the map 'Walt's Haunts', the bench which is currently located at the entrance of the' Opera House in Disneyland.

There, the players have met a special guest Wallace!

Wallace has promised that soon would share a new design of Edison Square , an area of Disneyland that was designed but never built. At this point the players were taken on a tour of Walt's private apartment above the barracks of the fire of Disneyland. Below you can see a video tour made earlier by Inside The Magic.

During the visit has been given much attention to the phonograph Walt and his wax cylinders, one of which you could see the Eiffel Tower, which appeared earlier in the visit to Club 33 .

Disney Reveals ‘Tomorrowland’ Logo; More Details on the Project’s Tone and Origins

by Sandy Schaefer

Disney previewed a handful of projects at the 2013 D23 expo, with a lineup that includes upcoming franchise sequels being distributed by the Mouse House (Thor: The Dark World, Muppets Most Wanted) and the studio’s latest installments in its series of live-action fairy tale movie re-imaginings (Maleficent, Cinderella) – in addition to Saving Mr. Banks, a biographical film that partly explores the man behind the legend that is Walt Disney. However, Star Wars: Episode VII was not the impending Disney sci-fi project that left a strong impression – or even made any appearance at all – during the expo.

That honor instead went to Tomorrowland, which is a film inspired by the real-life exploits of Mr. Disney – without the realism found in Saving Mr. Banks – as is being co-written and produced by Damon Lindelof (World War Z), with co-scripting and directing duties handled by Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). Bird and Lindelof were in attendance at the D23 event; there, the duo continued to tease their mysterious new collaboration, by unveiling an official logo and more real-world material than inspired the fantastical project in the first place.

Bird and Lindelof started to get people buzzing about Tomorrowland - back when the project was still referred to as 1952 - as they used their Twitter accounts to unveil photos of a mysterious suitcase containing real-life historical memorabilia. Lindelof has since then clarified that the box was taken from the Disney studio archives, referring to its previous storage location as being “like that Ark of the Covenant room [in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark']“ – one of many similar rooms that are located in Burbank, where material from the studio’s past is kept and preserved. The suitcase was brought to the D23 event, so as to allow those in attendance to get a better up-close look at its contents.

Among the items contained within said box was a record disc, which was dated back to November 1963. Disney’s team of specialists were able to extract information – in the form of animated footage believed to be over 50 years old – from said disc, which they then presented in a cleaned-up form at D23.

/Film has posted a description of the footage, which the site describes as having been shown in modern high-quality (despite being very choppy in structure) and having a very distinct retro (read: 1960s) feel:

It starts with humanity at the dawn of history, smashing together two rocks to make a fire and creative cave drawings, before jumping forward to ancient Greece and other cities. ”There is no such thing as fate,” proclaims a voice that resembles Orson Welles’.

Fast-forward to the World’s Fair in Paris in [1889]. Images of Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Jules Verne and Gustave Eiffel flit by, and they appear to be working together on a big, secret project. We also see pictures of various technological advancements including radios, cars, battleships, tanks, planes, electricity, the nuclear bomb, and the burning streets that followed the bomb. The implication is that technology is a double-edged sword — it has great potential for danger, but it also represents optimism for the future.
Empire interviewed Bird and Lindelof about Tomorrowland at D23, where the latter also teased the tone of the film:

“When we first started talking about it, the movie we were referencing was Close Encounters, so people incorrectly deduced that it was about some sort of alien contact, which we’ve ruled out. But that movie was about discovery. It was about that level of excitement of, ‘There’s something out there, and it inspires me and I can’t quite explain why it inspires me, but I need to know more about it. I need to get to it.’ That became the driving, fundamental feel behind it. We’re not trying to make a Spielberg movie, this is very much a Brad Bird movie, but I feel like that’s the vibe.”
The Tomorrowland cast includes George Clooney as the male lead, Hugh Laurie as the antagonist, and actresses Raffey Cassidy (Snow White and the Huntsman), Judy Greer (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) in either pivotal central or supporting roles. It’s not yet clear just how all the characters and story pieces will fit together in the final movie product – much less which (if any) of the plot tidbits and information that has been released (well, okay, leaked) ahead of production getting underway is accurate… and which ones serve the purpose of misdirection.

Having said that, the mystery buildup for Tomorrowland is certainly reminiscent of another project co-written and backed by Lindelof: Prometheus, which is the Alien spinoff/prequel that likewise had a fair number of false plot details “leaked” ahead of production. It’ll be interesting to see how the general reception to the final movie reveal compares between the two projects – all the more so because Bird is a filmmaker at the top of his game right now. (Translation: Tomorrowland has a decent shot of turning out better than the love/hate situation with Prometheus.)

What do you think about Tomorrowland so far? Are you intrigued by the rich history and imaginative real-world material behind the project – or are you worried that all this great inspirational content will end up being fumbled during the filmmaking process?

Quint tries to unravel the mystery of Brad Bird's TOMORROWLAND after the big D23 panel!

Aug. 11, 2013

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The biggest chunk of the Disney Live Action panel at D23 this year was devoted to Brad Bird's upcoming Tomorrowland... and I still am finding it hard to grasp what the fuck is going on with this movie.

Usually that's a good thing... Even though I've chosen this line of work, I don't particularly care to know everything about a movie before I enter the theater... but there's teasing and then there's this... It's funny that Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird have a literal “mystery box,” which supposedly was discovered in the old basement storage spot at Disney called “the morgue.” It's a box that has 1952 written on the front and is filled with crazy random weird imagineering pieces.

The main focus of the panel was Bird and Lindelof coming out and picking through some of the items in this box in front of everybody, showing off some of the pieces that “inspired” them to write this movie. It would be cool if they didn't have such a tongue in cheek approach to it. They know we're in on the joke and because they go super winky-wink it just seems like a whole lot of noise to me.

Maybe I'm getting tired and cranky in my old age, but I just want them to play straight with this. It felt like I was getting played the entire presentation, not teased.

Here are the items they pulled out of the 1952 box:

- 1 photograph dated April 1945 of Walt Disney and Amelia Earhart.

- 1 original vintage issue of Amazing Stories dated August 1928.

- 1 piece of cardboard with weird holes cut into it.

- 1 vintage folded blue print of the Disneyland park.

- 1 metal disc titled The History of Tomorrow, dated November of 1963.

Lets break those down. First up, the Earhart photo: They said that was weird since it was years after she disappeared. They looked into it and found out it was altered. They found the original photo and it was of Earhart and Cary Grant and someone pasted Disney's face on it. Imagineer prank? Nobody knows.

The Amazing Stories issue and weird piece of cardboard go together. There was a page number and issue number scrawled on it alongside a weird insignia that looks like an H. This insignia is also on the outside of the box and marked on the important pieces within the box, so I'm sure it's a huge part of the viral narrative and probably the movie itself.

As you've probably guessed, if you put that piece of cardboard over the right page certain words fill the holes. The story was called Armageddon 2419AD.

Here are the words the cardboard codex revealed: “I have seen across the gap between. I began practical penetration into the world. Secret retreats needed. The perfection of mechanical labor and organized industrial resources at hand.” What does it mean? Does it mean anything at all? That's the question, isn't it?

The folded blueprint of the park looks like most copies you can find out there, but that strange H insignia is written on it. There's also a weird series of numbers that when researched was actually a spectrum of light rays, so they brought in a blacklight and realized there's a whole secret set of blueprints underneath sections of the park. The biggest room was labeled “Hold Room” and was square underneath the It's A Small World attraction.

This was my favorite of the pieces in the box, actually. Probably because it most strongly ties Tomorrowland and what happens in it to the park (aside from the title of course). That's the most interesting aspect of the project to me. And while it's mysterious, it's at least straightforward. Unlike...

The last object in the box was a metal disc kind of the size of a record, but thick like a 35mm film can and it somehow held information in its grooves for a “lost” cartoon. It was scratched up (almost intentionally, they said, as if there were parts of it someone didn't want anyone to see) but they pulled what they could off of it and we got to watch it.

The animation was definitely old school '60s era Disney style and it began with an image of a man drawn on a cave wall. Human hands are seen striking two pieces of rocks together, creating sparks. The stick figure turns into an Egyptian and it begins to move, throwing out seeds like a farmer. That guy morphs into a Roman and then we see a quick evolution of humanity until we're at a cityscape.

The voiceover sounds a little like James Mason and he's talking about mankind's belief in progress which can be seen going back through all of recorded history. “But progress has a dark cost. With every advance comes with great temptation to abuse the knowledge for domination. Innovation leads to destruction.” Naturally the wall paintings change along with the darker narration about innovation leading to destruction as Rome burns... then it skips to Paris in 1959 and says something about a World's Fair and skips again.

Four Disney animated men appear with this next skip and they're quite known... Edison, Tesla, (Jules?) Verne and a fourth I couldn't make out... the sound's not too great in the D23 Arena. Whoever he is, he joins that supergroup of smarties and the animation shows them overlapping and their heads turn into a lightbulb. The narration says these brilliant men form a brotherhood dedicated to “mankind's greatest resource: Imagination.”

There are flashes of the growth of corporate greed and with nuclear weapons the growing threat of mutually assured destruction and we see an animated bomb fall, detonate and a mushroom cloud grow out of it.

”And so, working in secret, free of the corruption of money, politics and power the greatest minds collaborated on...” skip.

”And that, fair traveler, is why you've been invited here. At long last, we have built that tomorrow. You are about to enter a world of miracles and wonders, a shiny beacon of hope for human kind. And in just 20 short years we will share this extraordinary place with the entire world. So, would you like to see it?”

If you sense shades of Andrew Ryan and Bioshock and a spiffy Vault 101 cartoon from Fallout 3 you're not alone. These promised utopias hardly ever pan out, but since this is a Disney film that prominently features the park (I assume), then it's logical to figure that it shares Walt Disney's unending optimism about a healthy, loving world of tomorrow.

But that also might make a much less interesting movie, so I don't know. I'm only 32, but I'm turning into a grumpy old man when it comes to these puzzle box things. All I know is I love Disney parks, I love Brad Bird and I don't have the hate-on for Lindelof like most people do. Clooney's one of the best working actors and he sees something here, so I have faith until they prove me wrong.

I just don't know if I want to take part in the viral crap. I just wanna see the movie. That said, they have a booth on the D23 floor that has even more mystery box items on display that I'll make sure to scope out tomorrow. I'm at least that interested.

Thoughts?

Woah! Immediately I see why the mr Nix would want to create a place where dominating corruption couldn't exist. Why he kept out the "imaginative inventors". Because the greatest minds used lots of it. And they were behind some of the biggest inventions of all time. And then deadly weapons came into being, like it said. The H bomb. That deadly mushroom cloud. Enough to make any poor scared mortal who could, want to plan a place where none of it could happen.

Thus, kicking out those inventors who def had loads of imagination. Nix is a self appointed Hero who wants to save mankind from the likes of the H bomb and deadly warfare by those in domination who could care less about what they actually do to real ppl.

Bet someone is either a girlfriend of Nix or wife, who tries desperately to protect him from those smart enough to get thru the cracks, and turn away their intentions to stop him, as she is going to see him as a hero, instead of someone who will destroy the real world.

Just what I feel about what I read there in that last article. But time will tell...
