He should know by now not to mess with the TV when theres a possibility of a George sighting. He got lots of laughs when he told all the guys at work how he was chased out of the house!

I think Seth M was hit-or-miss, at times trying too hard to be edgy; other times nailing it just right. But I think if you're going to do insult humor, either towards an entire ethnicity (Jews running Hollywood, a tired cliche I hate) or an individual (George or Quentin T), you'd better be sure the jokes are original and top-notch funny. His weren't, so he came off as just mean and self-important a good part of the time. He should stick to parody and song-and-dance, IMO.

The Academy Is Encouraged to Disavow Seth MacFarlane’s “Degrading” Oscar Material

By Julie Miller

FOR: Editor Choice

In addition to being blamed for giving America a bloated, unfunny, and self-indulgent Academy Awards this year—which was still, however, better than James Franco’s telecast—Oscars host Seth MacFarlane is also being taken to task for his aggressively sexist material. The first offense was the “Boobs Song”—a tasteless opening number framed as a skit that alternate-universe MacFarlane would have performed if Captain Kirk had not interceded to save the telecast. Despite the fact that Sunday night’s MacFarlane would hypothetically not sing the offensive number, it was still performed in full length. The sketch effectively reduced various actresses’ Oscar-nominated (or Oscar-winning) performances down to the fact that they showed viewers their “boobs.” Backed by an upbeat tempo, MacFarlane enthusiastically rattled off names like Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson (whose “boobs” were seen after a Florida man hacked into her e-mail and leaked her private photos), and Jodie Foster, who bared her breasts, as Jezebel’s Lindy West points out, in a simulated gang-rape scene in The Accused that was most likely not filmed for MacFarlane’s smarmy enjoyment.

On top of the “Boobs Song”—MacFarlne’s misogynistic jabs included, but were not limited to, defining nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis in terms of how many years George Clooney has to wait until he can date her and explaining that Zero Dark Thirty is about “every woman’s innate ability to never ever let anything go.” (For a complete list of the Sexist Things That Happened at the Oscars, visit Buzzfeed. For thoughtful reads of MacFarlane’s brand of sexism and what it means, visit The New Yorker and New York magazine.)

Now, the Associated Press reports that California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal have appealed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences demanding that it acknowledges the degrading aspect of MacFarlane’s material. In a letter sent to Academy president Hawk Koch on Tuesday, the women, who lead the Legislative Women’s Caucus, wrote:

“On Oscar night, when Hollywood seeks to honor its best, Seth MacFarlane’s monologue reduced our finest female actresses to caricatures and stereotypes, degrading women as a whole and the filmmaking industry itself. . . . This should be a celebration of artists in the filmmaking industry, not an offensive display of disrespect toward women that sets the fight for gender equality, dignity, and respect back decades.”

In addition to noting “a disturbing theme about violence against women being acceptable and funny,” the women ask that the Academy disavow MacFarlane’s material, and use better judgment when deciding hosts and material in the future. During her “live-snark” of Sunday’s telecast, Nikki Finke also called for action from the Academy, albeit via less formal wording:

Thank god Academy President Hawk Koch can only serve a year. And AMPAS top exec Dawn Hudson should be fired immediately. Presumably they both thought this was riveting stuff. How can everyone associated with tonight have such awful taste in material?

Girls creator Lena Dunham also commented on the matter via two Twitter messages, the first of which was a defense of best-supporting-actress winner Anne Hathaway. “Ladies: Anne Hathaway is a feminist and she has amazing teeth. Let’s save our bad attitudes for the ones who aren’t advancing the cause.” In a later tweet, she adds: “‘The ones who aren’t advancing the cause’ I mentioned aren’t always, or mostly, women. Case in point: I saw your boobs.”

Thankfully for everyone who shares this opinion about MacFarlane’s distasteful material, the Family Guy creator has already said that he will not be returning to host the Academy Awards: “No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though.” Clearly.
