Bedside reading
Long day ahead tomorrow and have to get a good night sleep... difficult....
I am trying to with these ones: Milton Friedman& Anna Schwartz: A Monetary history of the United States OR Charles Kindleberger: The World in depression 1929-1939 OR Barbara Tuchman: The Guns of August
I am not going to touch: Art Lover: A Biogaraphy of Peggy Guggenheim (because every sentence makes me feel like I am wasting my life by sleeping)
Maybe you have better ideas for more boring books....I need advice I have trouble falling at sleep

Maybe a biography on George's romantic escapades. That should bore you to death. (or not)

Re: Bedside reading
Are you looking for something boring to sleep to? or do you just want a good book?
The best book I have read this summer is The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman... I have always loved her writing but this is exceptional.

Re: Bedside reading
Thanks Silly girl: I know the writer but haven't read the one you mentioned, so it's in my list.
This summer I read A thousand Splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini ( moving book and fits any society, anytime)
I was on a ferry over a year ago and there was a woman who started talking to me ( we shared a table because of the crowd) she was a literature professor at the university and asked me what was the best book I have ever read - I told her what it was and then she named this book to be hers.

Last night I was reading and laughing aloud in bed doctors' dictations " cured beside the treatment" it is not in english.
Maybe I will translate best parts someday here... I read the whole book. Too hilarious

Re: Bedside reading
He hee I nearly have own thread here
Haven't decide yet which category my tonight's companion falls... "the road ahead" by Bill Gates and it's about digital age...
As we know, anyone can write these days and have a big audience. Anyone can have a blog and write what ever there. But the rule that applies is that It has to be extraordinary, fascinating and exciting. If you have a blog about needle work and knitting. You might have 10 or max 100 readers/followers. But if the same person writes a blog about how she e.g. worked as a prostitute for a year to make money to go to the around the world trip and she is inviting everyone with her (couch traveling). Depending on her writing skills she could easily have 10 million readers.
Her flashbacks to previous year with revealing pictures and entertaining traveling and sightseen tips & stories would ensure that. And contrast, picture it:
She would be in Taj Mahal, symbol of eternal love, but she would write that she likes the swans better. And just how many wedding invitations have picture of taj mahal in them and how many swans? She would advice you to leave your best pair of shoes at the hotel, because you would have to take them off before entering. So there you would leave your shoes, into what would seem like a sea of crocks. On her blog would be a picture of these crocks, I mean shoes.
Or she would be in Venice, San Marco to be precise. “Watch’s out those birds, they’ll snap your gelato!” And here is a picture of big building; so monumental it only fits partly in the pic. It is a church, because it has a cross on the roof, which you are not able to see from this camera angle. Inside you will see a lot of pastel color fat angels flying around.
And then finally, gondola, make sure you have someone to kiss underneath the “ponte dei sospiri”.Yes, gondolier will do just fine. He has to stop singing first. Kiss means you will never part, but you definitely will, because this gondola tour lasts 30 minutes, not a minute longer. In the loading place there is already Chinese group waiting to get on a tour to the canals, some of them wearing respiratory masks and nearly all have umbrellas. Everyone is taking pictures of everything. You will never know how many photo albums have picture of you in them.
And so on… boy I am tired, but not enough to sleep

Re: Bedside reading
My neighbor gave me this little book (90 pages) about Traditional Chinese medicine and healthy life (their methods) Xin is heart, Fei is lungs, Gan is liver and so on... Interesting. But while we ate the dinner and talked I had some wine too, and had a class while preparing the dinner... And I think I am a little, how do you say it ...

Re: Bedside reading
I bought yesterday three books from the garden party (can't tell you the cause) Ernest Hemingway For whom the bell tolls (already read in my language long time ago), Sylvia Plath Selected poems and Wife in the north.
But now I must wonder why on these pages there are 3 active topics on SK, one for GC and rest are games or likes = like me can't participate (language challenged...) ?

It doesn't change the situation...
Well, I would be happy to read SK's last tweet here, but not the latest... if you know what I mean
