Clooney falls into Bin Laden's Trap (according to Fox)
Apparently Fox News has a 'culture' section. Who knew?

With the U.S. government and such scintillating strategic thinkers as George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Angelina Jolie, and Mia Farrow in the lead, the West is about to help rip Darfur and the rest of Muslim Sudan's oil-rich southern territories out of the country and create an independent, largely Christian state.
Under the guise of a "referendum" (set for 9 January 2011) that will be observed by a 110-person European Union team of imperial busybodies, Sudan's primarily Christian south will be severed from the Sudanese nation-state, setting the stage for a continuation of the decades old Muslim-Christian Sudanese civil war. The difference will be that henceforth - as is occurring in Somalia - the U.S. and the West will be obliged to protect the new nation they created by theft and oil lust with diplomacy, funding, arms, military training, and eventually troops.
And what is America's interest in becoming involved to the hilt and inextricably in Sudan? What is so vital to the United States in Sudan that President Obama is pressing the leaders of Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and the other states of the African Union to support "our intense interest in having a successful referendum" - read that as "our intense interest in carving up Sudan to suit our imperial purposes and corner access to Sudanese oil." (As an aside, one must admit Rudyard Obama is nothing if not an aggressive proponent of improving - that is, "Westernizing" - the lives of "our little brown brothers," although the blatant theft of Islamic land is a rather odd component for the kinder and more gentle "Muslim outreach program" Obama announced in Cairo and Jakarta.)
The answer is that Obama, our bipartisan political elite, the mainstream media, and the rich, immature, libertine, and anti-U.S. Hollywood set lead by Clooney, et al, want to feel good about themselves by doing "good" for foreigners. For these elite U.S. citizens-of-the-world, ordinary Americans and their kids can starve, freeze, live on the streets, fail to find work, and remain illiterate forever. In essence, they can rot while Washington spends their taxes on Darfur - a place where absolutely no genuine U.S. interest is at stake.
Now, that's a bit harsh and in one aspect even wrong. The Democrats and Republicans must ensure that ordinary Americans are kept well-off enough to keep having children who will join the U.S. military that will be used to fight the wars their interventionism start. And there can be no doubt that Washington's leading role in championing Darfur's secession from Sudan will intensify America's war with Islam and the evolving Islam-vs-Christianity war in Africa. And, not surprisingly, the ever-adept Osama bin Laden began setting this trap for the United States over the course of the last decade.
Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Abu Yaha al-Libi, one of al-Qaeda's leading theologians, have spoken publicly and on multiple occasions about Washington's intention to intervene in Somalia and Sudan to halt the spread of Sunni Islam in the Horn of Africa; to eliminate the Islamic regime in Sudan; to champion the spread of Christianity in Africa; and to ensure Sudan's massive oil reserves are in pro-U.S. hands. Obama's administration, with full Republican support, is about to make these three al-Qaeda leaders appear omniscient to the Muslim world.

Rupert Murdoch and republican Roger Ailes (something like that) started Fox New showing a conservative approach to the news.

Re: Clooney falls into Bin Laden's Trap (according to Fox)
A few valid points but the opening paragraph says it all about how well informed the author of this half baked rant is.
Darfur is in the North not the South , it will still be right under al Bashir’s thumb when the South splits from the North and then the Darfuri’s lives are likely to get worse (if that’s possible). In fact he threatened a few weeks ago to make their life hell by formally instituting strict Sharia law throughout Nth Sudan if the South votes for independence.
On the other hand I do believe the reason the US and others are pushing here is not entirely humanitarian they want Oil and Mineral concessions in the South’s so far untapped oil and mining regions where practical ‘help’ will no doubt be provided for a price. There is also a western agenda to keep China’s involvement in the area under control. Israel is also deep in the mix here stirring the pot for their own Middle East agenda. We are not seeing the same kind of effort in The Congo or Eritrea where the oil and mining rights are not up for grabs, in fact the west already has major interests there.
To cap it all off the Sth is being clandestinely armed by western interests on credit, oil resource concessions in the future will pay the bill for these weapons. Its all very well to help them defend themselves and become independent of the North’s control but honestly, has no one learned from previous dealings with Mugabi and Hussain , the ‘freedom fighter’ you help today often turns into a corrupt tyrant down the line, hopefully the South’s president and government stays honest and truly puts their people first but history tells a different story when vast amounts of money come into play. Even if the people in power there now are honest it won’t be long before the con men out to line their own pockets wheedle their way into positions of authority. Every government on earth suffers from that particular disease in some degree but it is exponentially magnified in African countries with any kind of natural resources and Southern Sudan is the proverbial pot of gold.
BTW…did anyone read that al Bashir is suspected of having socked away between 6 and 9 billion dollars of his countries money into personal bank accounts in the UK. Of course the bank (Lloyds ) denies it, but I can believe it, here are certain elements in the west happily helping the present Sudanese regime regardless of their human rights abuses, as they will happily help a new Southern Sudan if/when it comes into being. Playing six sides of the fence all at once when money is involved seems to be normal for politics and big business today. When the dust settles South Sudan will be carved up just as the author of this piece says but it won’t be by foreign governments it will be by soulless multinationals.
George is just the swan on the lake in all this , distracting the viewer from the mud and slim beneath. I do believe George is doing what he thinks is right and just, with no ulterior motive or agenda on his part but I also believe he is being used by vested interests to simplify the situation for the average uninformed viewer/reader and encouraging them to believe its a simple case of good guys v bad guys, feeding the Christian v Muslim take on North African politics.
I hope it all goes peacefully and the South does get its independence but it will hardly be a sudden cure for the ills of Sudan, I think it will just be the beginning of a whole new set of problems.

Why wouldn't he be ok? I think we're worrying over nothing. He'll be back on Friday with some interesting stories to tell and possibly one or two adventures but he wouldn't be going unless he was fairly sure he'd be safe.

Jet lag is not dangerous! And neither is Sudan. It's not totally safe, true, but if it were realistically a dangerous place he wouldn't be going.
He's taking a calculated risk, as we all do every day, that he'll come back safe and unharmed. Assuming, of course, that he stays away from the curried goat.

Re: Clooney falls into Bin Laden's Trap (according to Fox)
Em, thank you for that thorough overview of the situation. Caged had sent me links to follow up on the details but you've really laid it out concisely and made it easy to understand the true dynamic behind this situation.
I agree wholeheartedly that George's involvement in this situation is coming from an authentic desire to help and a more altruistic part of his nature and not in any way a ploy for good PR, etc. which he's been accused of in the past by some. And I also agree that you can't ever be sure of the political motivation of ANY government involvement, no matter who that government is and it would be naive to think otherwise. They LIED us into the Iraq War for profit by a few American companies and mercenaries and what makes me laugh out loud is their nasty little plan backfired and they DIDN'T get the oil field contracts that we went to war to get in the first place. KARMA! It's a bitch when it bites back at you!
Wanted to add that I don't doubt at all that there could be unscrupulous politicos quite willing to use an unwitting George as a pawn to their full advantage. That's WHAT they do best!

Em thanks for your comments. I too wonder if George is being used by those with non altruistic interests in the region. One would hope that he is aware of all the conflicting vested interests and has decided his reasons (which I do believe are truly altruistic) are still compelling enough for him to continue.

Re: Clooney falls into Bin Laden's Trap (according to Fox)
No not at all fake, in my opinion. George continues with this fight because he was taught by his parents at a very early age to stand up for what's right even when it's uncomfortable. He's told stories about eating dinner fast when they went anywhere because of his dad's tendency to get into verbal altercations over things that offended his sensibilities and often they would have to leave during dinner, if someone had upset Nick's very strong sense of right and wrong.

Lighterside, you are right about his strong sense of right and wrong, add that stubborn streak he's got and he can't back out no matter who he's got himself involved with or what their motivation might be!
