George Clooney 'to star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
Seriously? Are there no other actors working in Hollywood these days??
From The Telegraph
George Clooney is in talks to star in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. remake directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The actor would play agent Napoleon Solo, a role taken by Robert Vaughan in the original 1960s television series.
Clooney is a long-time collaborator with Soderbergh on films including Out of Sight, Syriana, Michael Clayton and the Ocean's Eleven series.
The two have met to discuss the Napoleon Solo role, according to The Hollywood Reporter, although the project is still in the early stages of development.
The original series about two secret agents for the United Network Command of Law and Enforcement ran from 1964-68, with British actor David McCallum starring alongside Vaughn as Illya Kuryakin.
Ian Fleming, the James Bond author, was one of the early creators of the series and came up with the name of Napoleon Solo. He also suggested that the show have a Miss Moneypenny-style secretary called April Dancer. The name was used in The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., a spin-off starring Stefanie Powers as a female agent.
Warner Bros has been working on a big screen adaptation since the 1990s and Soderbergh is in early talks to join the project. He is currently shooting Contagion, an action thriller starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Kate Winslet.

I remember the TV show, even as a kid I loved it, had a big crush on David McCallum. Now I watch him on NCIS. I think George would be great as Mr. Solo. Still would like to see him play a bad guy again.

Matt Damon Says Steven Soderbergh's Retirement is Imminent
December 22, 2010
Back when we heard George Clooney was potentially up for leading Steven Soderbergh's adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. for the big screen, there were rumblings that the project was being viewed as the last film on which the actor and director would collaborate. Now it sounds like that train of thought may be taken a little further in that the adaptation of the 60's TV series may be Soderbergh's last film altogether. In speaking with Matt Damon, who's been working with Soderbergh's on Contagion, 24 Frames learned that the director has grown weary of cinematic storytelling and will likely make good on his talk of retirement very soon.
Damon says, "He's retiring, he's been talking about it for years and it's getting closer." Seemingly confirming George Clooney's collaboration with Soderbergh on The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Damon had this to say about Soderbergh's future in filmmaking:
"He’s kind of exhausted with everything that interested him in terms of form. He’s not interested in telling stories. Cinema interested him in terms of form and that’s it. He says, 'If I see another over-the-shoulder shot, I’m going to blow my brains out.' After this movie we’re doing ‘Liberace’ next summer with Michael Douglas, and then he might do one more movie after that with George [Clooney], and then after that he’s retiring."
However, Damon seems to be trying to convince him otherwise, and aspires to follow in his footsteps as a great director:
"After I worked with Clint [Eastwood] I went back and said, ‘Look, Clint is having a blast and he's going to be 80 years old.’ And Steven says back, ‘Yeah, but he’s a storyteller and I’m not,’ If you're an actor or a writer or someone working in film, it's such a waste. For me, I'm going to spend the next 40 years trying to become a great director and I will never reach what he's reached. And he's walking away from it."
I can understand Soderbergh becoming bored with the traditions of filmmaking, and he's been trying to shake things up with lower profile experimental indie projects like The Girlfriend Experience and Bubble, but apparently that's not enough. Some people just get bored with their current jobs, and no matter how creative or inspiring Soderbergh's work in film has been, we can't blame him for wanting to climb another mountain outside of the film industry. Personally, I hope The Man from U.N.C.L.E. comes together spectacularly so Soderbergh's leaves on good terms. We'll certainly miss him when he leaves. Anyone disappointed?

Am I the only one kind of happy that Soderbergh won't be making any more films?
I think I've sat through too many horrendous films of his (Sex Lies and videotape and something godawful with Julia Roberts in a wig?) to really miss him.

I DO like George in the part of Solo - it's played a little tongue in cheek and that fits his image and humor.
And Steven and George re-united. Makes sense in light of their friendship and George's sense of loyalty to long-time friends.

Re: George Clooney 'to star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
Soderbergh strikes me as a talented director, a good guy, and somebody that gained a lot of respect early on. People like GTC were happy to help him indulge in superartistic stuff that turned out, frankly, kind of boring. (I haven't seen the Good German yet.)
I wonder what he'll do next?
PS: Just saw Men Who Stare At Goats last night. Heslov is a good director! I hope he can stand on his own soon. Sparkly eyes! (Damn, that should have been my username!)

Steven Soderbergh Reveals Retirement Plan To Sportscaster
Steven Soderbergh has confirmed on a podcast with NFL Network's Rich Eisen that he will indeed retire. That will happen, he said, after he directs Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in Liberace, and possibly makes his swan song The Man From Uncle with George Clooney (he hopes). He'll soon open the action espionage film Haywire with mixed martial arts star Gina Carano and wrapped Contagion with Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard and Jude Law. As a fan of Soderbergh's work, from sex, lies and videotape to Out of Sight and others, my first reaction is that while there may be directors out there who might consider retirement, Soderbergh isn't among them. My theory: he chose to lay out his plans to a sportscaster because he's following the Brett Favre playbook. That starts with a tearful retirement announcement, and an eventual return whenever a good offer or boredom sets in. Since Soderbergh doesn't have to worry about being face-planted into the turf by 300-pound defensive linemen, he can retire and un-retire into his 70s. Sure, he had a setback with Moneyball, and Scott Rudin and Angelina Jolie's Cleopatra might eclipse the musical on the same subject Soderbergh planned to make with Catherine Zeta-Jones. But does anyone really think Soderbergh should hang it up?

From indiewire
[from an interview with Steven Soderbergh]
‘U.N.C.L.E’ is something he hopes George Clooney will star in. “That’s the hope,” he said, not wanting to count his chickens before they are hatched. “You know, we stay and touch and we talk obviously and he seems like the perfect fit for the role.”

George Clooney Dropping Out of Steven Soderbergh's 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'
EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that George Clooney is in the process of withdrawing as the star of Steven Soderbergh’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Still trying to get a clear sense of the reason for the exit of Clooney, who is Soderbergh’s former partner and did the Ocean’s Eleven films and Out of Sight with the director. I’m told that Warner Bros intends to stay on track for a February 2012 start for the movie, which is based on the 1960s light spy drama starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. Soderbergh is putting U.N.C.L.E. together as he prepares for the release of Warners’ Contagion, which stars Matt Damon and is being released Sept. 9.

Too bad if true. I thought it might be a fun flick for him to do and if done well, a fun flick for his fans.
Maybe there is a scheduling conflict. Or if I wanted to start a conspiracy theory... (hey if the kooks on IMDB can do it why not me? HA!) perhaps there is bad blood between George and Warners for dropping him?

"He said he just can't do the action and stunt scenes," revealed an U.N.C.L.E. source who's familiar with handsome actor's health situation. "In fact, I think he's planning on having another operation during the time he would have been filming."
Clooney's reps have not returned comment, as yet.
"But George knows this movie is all about action," continued the U.N.C.L.E. insider, "and he knows he's just not up to it. That's what this is about. It's nothing to do with Steven."
Soderbergh and Clooney have a long-standing relationship together, most famously from the Oscar-winning director's Ocean's Eleven franchise, which, admittedly, allowed George to thieve and plunder with gadgets and killer facial expressions more than the death-defying stunts that have apparently been written into the U.N.C.L.E. script.
Heal fast, George!

Casting open for U.N.C.L.E sidekick

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgard are reportedly battling it out to star in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
George Clooney has just dropped out of starring as Napoleon Solo in Steven Soderbergh's spy drama, but TheWrap.com reports Warner Brothers is busy seeking an actor in his 20s to play sidekick Illya Kuryakin.
David McCallum played the young spy in the 60s TV series, who learned from his partnership with veteran Napoleon, played by Robert Vaughn, as they worked together at fictitious secret international espionage and law-enforcement agency U.N.C.L.E.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. the movie is scheduled to start production in February 2012.
Warner Bros has been trying to get the film off the ground for several years, and the project is expected to give the story a "fresh start", reportedly focusing on making it abuddy movie between the two spies.
The three actors have all become big names, Joseph having starred in Christopher Nolan's box office smash Inception, True Blood's Alexander appearing in Lars Von Trier's upcoming Melancholia and Ryan Gosling winning rave reviews for Blue Valentine and more recently Drive.

Another replacement name. From Variety:
Bradley Cooper may cry 'U.N.C.L.E.'
'Hangover' thesp offered the Napoleon Solo role his CAA team fought for By Jeff Sneider
After a whirlwind casting search that has seen Matt Damon and Johnny Depp pass on the lead role vacated by George Clooney, Bradley Cooper has emerged as Steven Soderbergh's choice to star in Warner Bros.' spy pic "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."
Cooper currently has an offer to play Napoleon Solo, and the opportunity to work with Soderbergh is one that Cooper is likely to accept, considering how hard his team at CAA worked to position him for the coveted part.
Once he wraps "The Silver Linings Playbook" for director David O. Russell and The Weinstein Company, Cooper will segue into Alex Proyas' "Paradise Lost" for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. He's expected to wrap that big-budget epic by March, at which time he'd move directly to "U.N.C.L.E.," which Soderbergh intends to direct before helming a Liberace biopic for HBO.
Cooper is a fixture on the Warner Bros. lot, having starred in the studio's blockbuster "Hangover" franchise. He recently wrapped a pair of indies, "The Words" and "The Place Beyond the Pines." Cooper, who plays Lucifer in "Paradise Lost" opposite Benjamin Walker, helped power Relativity Media's "Limitless" to a $156 million worldwide gross.

Shame, as GC would have been perfect for Napoleaon Solo. Now Soderburgh and Bradley cooper have pulled out, it seems that U.N.C.L.E. seems destined to stay in the past.

I'm not convinced this would have been a good role for him. Thought I read somewhere a few years ago that he dropped out because he thought it was to physical a role for him. And just read as much above in this thread. Maybe for other reasons too. The casting of the main characters obviously has been an issue. Be interesting to see how good this film is.

Actually, I'm glad George dropped out of this one. I have a feeling it's gonna kinda suck. Not a fan of Ritchie as a director, and even less so as a writer. He does both on this movie.
But, I could be dead wrong, and this will be one that got away from our guy. Wouldn't be the first time -- for either of those things.

This might be a decent movie, although for me these kinds of adaptations don't usually live up to expectations. I know George said he bowed out because of back problems but somehow I don't see this as a good fit for him. I think the draw for him was to work with Soderbergh again. Considering all the changes that were made I'm glad he wasn't involved.

Re: George Clooney 'to star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
It seems to me this would appeal mostly to an older audience who were familiar with the original tv show and remember the cold war of the '50s and '60s. Younger audiences won't remember either the original show or the cold war, so the movie might not have much meaning for them.
I don't understand the need to constantly remake things that were well done to begin with. IMO you're asking for trouble because you'll probably never be as good as the original and people will resent that you tried and failed. It's as if the arrogance that lets you assume you can improve something that was already really well done sort of guarantees that you'll screw it up.
I don't understand the need to constantly remake things that were well done to begin with. Re: George Clooney 'to star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
I remember watching this show I just dated myself, I remember watching it every week. I don't know how well it will do as a movie though. It's like when the took the t.v. show the Avengers and made that a movie I don't know if that was a big hit .

Just as I thought. $14M opening weekend, and the reviews are not good enough to help it build. George would have been creamed if he'd been in this.

I tend to agree Way2. Tho the project went through numerous changes on its way to this end result. Different directors and stars. I think the script changed dramatically when Ritchie took it over. Think it became far more stylized and contemporary in its look and feel. The Washington Post gave it one star. Cavill and Hammer did not get high marks. Bottom line they were miscast.
If George had stayed in the project wonder if Soderbergh would have followed through to the end.

Neither Guy Ritchie nor cast were the cause for poor box office opening weekend, I believe.
Bond & Mission Impossible franchises are enormously popular in this genre & huge box office drawcards than this similar themed big screen adaptation of an American TV series from the 60s.
Contemporary audiences may not too familiar with it, or maybe inappropriate timing & marketing.
I think it may not appeal to audiences when currently clashing with more popular MI: Rogue Nation & soon to be released Spectre.

Re: George Clooney 'to star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
Also, here's the thing, Man from U.N.C.L.E coincided with the release of Straight Outta Compton. Not just up against the more popular action spy thriller MI:Rogue Nation, which is in its 3rd week.
$60million on opening weekend with a relatively unknown cast, but playing mega successful black rap artists who became iconic figures in American pop culture. Audiences love such biopics & it's a great film too according to ratings & reviews.

'U.N.C.L.E.' has a cast that was picked from page one of the international sales agents' handbook. But the script sucks, it's poorly paced, and Ritchie couldn't resist the urge to stylize in sacrifice of story.
Combine that with a questionable choice of source material -- a decades-old TV series that was itself a knockoff in the genre -- and you've got yourself a box office misfire. So happy George dodged this bullet.

Re: George Clooney 'to star in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
Oh. Forgot.
'Straight Outta Compton' is, no debate, a culturally important film, and I'm glad to know it's performing so well. But NWA was as misogynist as anybody could be, and Dr. Dre in particular lived that misogyny by his often physically brutal treatment of women. So I won't be paying to see this one. If and when it comes to a viewing venue that I'm already paying for, maybe then.
And as a baseball fan, I'm appalled at the White Sox cap that EazyE is wearing in scenes from 1986 -- that particular logo wasn't used until about 5 years later.

I heard about the physical mistreatment of women by Dr. See. It wasn't even covered in the film .... from what I heard. I have not seen it.
Nice pick-up on your point about the White Sox cap. Wonder how many filmgoers caught that one.
