George Clooney really is like a fine wine he just seems to be getting better and better with age - and acting is not the only thing that he has got down to a fine art but directing as well.

And this autumn saw him return to the director’s chair for the first time since Leatherheads with political thriller The Ides of March.

The movie sees Clooney once again work with writing and producing partner Grant Heslov as they adapted the Beau Willimon play Farragut North.

Like all of Clooney’s directorial efforts before this he also stars in The Ides of March as he delivers another powerful performance as a politician who is not all he seems.

He is joined by an all star cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Evan Rachel Wood and Paul Giamatti.

This is one of the best movies for Clooney from a directing perspective - and it is also his first contemporary piece.

There are some great performances as you would expect but The Ides of March is a beautiful looking movie.

Clooney has captured some great images as he shows that sometimes silence is more powerful than words.

The Ides of March is one of the best political thrillers that I have seen this year as it tackles the modern day political system, betrayal, friendship put to the test as well as a hint of romance.

Clooney could well pick up a Best Director nod for his work on this movie and I expect to pick up a Best Picture nomination.

And Clooney will be back in front of the camera next year as he has teamed up with filmmaker The Descendants.

The Descendants is already surrounding in Oscar rumours - this is most likely to be the movie for which Clooney picks up another Best Actor nod.

I really think George is aiming for a best director Oscar. It would be a real achievement and he has said it is what he eventually wants to do full time. Although I hope he continues to be in the movies themselves as well. I would like it if he did something other then political thrillers!

@Dexter I agree! That's his goal... But like you, I hope he broadens his choices... one political... then... space it out and do something completely different... to capture all humanity instead of focusing on a few. That's how you get followers being a director. JMO

I haven't seen "The Ides"... but I feel it will most probably be "Best Actor" Oscar this time... Although "Best Director" feels like an awesome miracle, it might take a while before that(??)... Very Happy

Either crowns... prayers for the best Smile

With all the films out there, just to be nominated will be an honor for him. I know there's only 1st place, but it has garnered other awards so far too.

I agree Cinderella. It would also broaden his skills behind the camera. Some strong female roles would be good in his movies too. But he is doing a good job being taken seriously as a director so he is doing something right. Not sure if he will win this year but I do think it will be on the cards for him in the future.
