George Clooney is coming to Boston to film a new movie this month, and he will reportedly be bringing Ben Affleck with him.
Clooney will be directing “The Tender Bar,” a drama adopted from the 2005 memoir of the same name by Pulitzer-winning author J.R. Moehringer.
Filming for the movie will take place in the Boston area starting Feb. 22 and will likely wrap up in mid-April, according to two sources familiar with the production.
“The Tender Bar” tells the story of Moehringer’s childhood living in Long Island without a father, a New York disc jockey who disappeared before J.R. could speak. Seeking a replacement father figure, Moehringer begins spending time at a bar owned by his uncle, where the regulars welcome him as one of their own.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck will play Moehringer’s uncle in the film, while Tye Sheridan (“Ready Player One”) will play Moehringer.
Representatives for Affleck did not respond to a request for comment.
Clooney will direct and produce the film through his production banner Smokehouse Pictures, with Amazon Studios handling distribution, according to Variety.
“The Tender Bar” would mark Affleck’s first time filming a movie in Boston since his poorly received 2016 movie “Live By Night.” The Dennis Lehane adaptation, which Affleck starred in, directed, and produced, was filmed primarily in Georgia, but also featured scenes shot in Boston, Lawrence, and North Andover.

I wonder if George is taking any roles in this one. I could see him as the owner of the bar, which is a smaller role, or maybe the role of JR’s father, although he might be too old for that one.
Missa- Clooney-love. And they said it wouldn't last

LOWELL — Golden Globe and Academy Award winner George Clooney was spotted in Lowell’s Belvidere neighborhood on Friday, directing a scene from his new movie, “The Tender Bar.”
According to entertainment news source Collider, the film is based on Pulitzer Prize winner J.R. Moehringer’s best-selling memoir, “which recollected the time he spent searching for unlikely father figures among the patrons at his uncle’s bar in Long Island.”
The Amazon Studio film will star Lily Rabe, Ben Affleck, as well as Tye Sheridan, who, according to Lowell resident Peter Aucella, was also on Parkview Avenue in Belvidere for the Friday morning shoot.
Aucella is the former assistant superintendent of the Lowell National Historical Park, having retired last year, and is one of the people who plans the Lowell Summer Music Series.

Aucella and his wife, Rosemary, who live across the road from the home where the scene was filmed, had an opportunity to chat with Clooney on Friday. Aucella described Clooney as “warm and personable.” The Aucellas were outside watching the film crew with their dog when Clooney approached them.
“He said, ‘Who do we have here?’ and he came over and pet our dog,” Aucella said.
Clooney then showed off a few photos on his cellphone of his own dog, a St. Bernard named Rosie, named after his late aunt, the actress and singer Rosemary Clooney, before getting back to work.
During Friday’s shoot, the crew hauled in several vintage vehicles for use in the scene. Aucella estimates the scene filmed on Friday will probably make up less than a minute of the film.
“They did one take of a car driving down the street, and then they immediately moved on and did four takes of five or six family members getting out of the car, taking their suitcases out of the trunk and walking into the house, as the lead character — played by Tye Sheridan — came out of the house and made his way down the driveway with the trash can,” Aucella said.

The Aucellas and other residents on Parkview Avenue were aware their neighborhood would be used for the film for several weeks. Aucella added that when he learned the movie would be shot across the road from his home, he purchased a copy of Moehringer’s book, which he has since read.
The crew is expected to be back on Parkview Avenue at some point in March.
Chris Byers, director of market and operations at New England Studios and a Lowell resident, confirmed the crew for “The Tender Bar” is using the Devens-based studio, as well as filming in locations around Massachusetts. They are set to wrap up filming in May.
