These are not easy times for one of the most high-profile celebrity couples. Earlier this year the Clooneys’ £10m property on the Oxfordshire-Berkshire border was flooded when the Thames burst its banks after Storm Dennis. Aerial photography showed their tennis court and other parts of their grounds under water, even though they had shelled out £50,000 on flood defences in 2016.

So she only contributes 2million pounds to the pot? I would have thought she was worth more than that.

I'm thinking it is easy to estimate George's wealth there are many sites supposedly listing the numbers. I don't think Amals finances are public like George's. 

I may be wrong . George's numbers aren't facts no one knows how much he is really worth except him and his accountant and of course Amal.

I don't know how it works in the States, Lizzy, but given the amount of Pro Bono work she does, I am not that surprised - and for instance if she took a high profile paying case then it may be different. As it is she represents the British Government (salaries not known to be huge!)  and there is no onward tax to pay on property - you pay the Government a percentage of the cost of the house when you buy one and that's it. It's called stamp duty here and and different pay structures according to the cost of the house - so for the purchase of Mill House they would have paid the government 12% of the cost of the house....

PAN - I wasn't thinking in terms of taxes, although I would think George probably covered all the costs for the Sonning property. I just thought that coming from a relatively privileged family and working for a fairly high-profile legal firm, Amal would have been worth more in her own right than the article states.

Doesn't his money go into a corporation or foundation that he established a long time ago when he started making real money? (Not the Clooney Foundation for Justice.) I seem to remember something to that effect, but to be honest, I'm too lazy to look it up. Just a niggling thought at the back of my memory.

George has corporation , his properties are under the corporation as well. It may be Guilfoyle I think

it's Nina's maiden name if I remember correctly.

I think a few million for a barrister isn't bad, to be honest. Lawyers do make good money but not sure how many of them make millionaire status in the UK.

As I understand it, she doesn't work for a law firm. I think things in the UK are very different from the US and I'm going to ask PAN if she can explain as I don't really understand. From what I get, as a barrister, she's effectively self-employed, but they cluster together in chambers according to legal interests (in Amal's case, human rights). I assume they pay rent for office space and costs, but each barrister in a chamber goes out and finds their own business/clients and sets their own working hours and so on. They aren't employed by that chamber as it's not a legal firm, more of an association or something.

Absolutely right, Katie. And as I understand it, the difference between us and the States is that there are attorneys in the States for every aspect of the law. 

Whereas the UK has barristers for court cases and higher court cases  and obviously human rights, international tribunals and courts, and solicitors for things like wills, moving house, patents and companies laws.

It sounds like they are just joining together to save money. Doctors and dentists and the like do that over here. They form group practices so they can share premises and clerical staff. It saves them money. I guess lawyers can do that, too.

I think the difference in the legal field might be more semantic than actual. Where you have barristers who appear in court, we have defense attorneys and district attorneys. Other attorneys specialize in specific areas of the law the way Amal does and they might  also try a case in court. The lawyers you call solicitors we call attorneys or lawyers as well. Same work, different name.

Sort of I think, but barristers have to do a year of pupillage as well and have to become part of a chambers and it looks from this as if they do a different level of work with different qualifications - and of course it entails the wigs and gown in high courts
