A LARGE list of potential royal baby godparents exists for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s expectant child - but will the parents opt for Jessica Mulroney or Amal Clooney as a godparent?

As Meghan Markle’s due date rapidly approaches, speculation is rising as to whom she and Prince Harry might choose as godparents for their first royal baby. Royal infants traditionally have more than the Christian stipulated standard number of three godparents. Prince Louis has six, future king Prince George has seven and Princess Charlotte has five. But royal expert James Brookes has exclusively told Express.co.uk he believes the non-traditional couple will opt for far less.

Mr Brookes, the communications director for Royal Central, said: “You still want the role to feel special and when you have seven, eight or nine people, it loses its meaning a bit.
“Harry and Meghan will wait to keep it special for both parties and their son or daughter.”
Harry and Meghan, who are friends with various A-list celebrities, will also have greater freedom in their choices as their child is not in the line of succession, Mr Brookes added.

So who can we expect as godparents? Will Jessica Mulroney and Amal Clooney be among them?

Meghan’s best friend Jessica Mulroney is “up there” as a favourite while fashion designer Misha Nonoo is also a “contender”, according to Mr Brookes.
Fashion designer Misha Nonoo is credited with introducing Harry to his future wife via a blind date.

George Clooney has already declared himself out of the running but lawyer wife Amal has not.
However, Mr Brookes says he does not see her as a “first choice”.
The royal commentator said: “When you put her in contention with one of the others it seems less likely.
Mr Brookes said if the numbers were larger then it would be possible for Amal to be considered, especially with her lawyer status and George’s Hollywood profile.
He said: “But the point of godparents traditionally is someone who can guide the child spiritually through their life and it has traditionally gone to some who has played a big part in their life up until that point.”

Who are the other possibilities?

Harry might choose Major Nicholas can Cutsem - a long-term pal of his and brother William - as he is already godfather to Prince Louis, Mr Brookes says.
Major van Custom’s daughter Florence was also a bridesmaid at the royal wedding and is Harry's goddaughter.
Mr Brookes added: “He is in a close circle of friends with Harry.”

Another family with strong ties to Harry and William are the van Straubenzees, so Charlie or brother Thomas are real possibilities.
Mr Brookes said: “Charlie has been friends with Harry since his school days, they are quite close.”
Thomas is also Charlotte’s godfather.
Another two potential names are Jake and Zoe Warren.
Their daughter Zalie was just two when she was bridesmaid at Harry and Meghan’s wedding last year.

Mr Brookes added the eventual choices will be a be a “joint decision” but Meghan “will have quite a big say in it, perhaps more than Harry”.
