George Clooney is one of the most famous actors in the world today. Three golden awards and two academy awards later, the suave man is gearing up to embrace fatherhood with his gorgeous wife. However, there is a side of this amazing actor that not many know of.
Besides being an actor and a producer, George is also a human rights activist. Founded in 2010, the ‘Satellite Sentinel Project' was conceived by Clooney and John Prendergast , who is also the co-founder of the ‘Enough Project' when they were on a trip to Sudan in 2010.
The idea was simple but great. George realised that if Google Earth could locate anyone's house then why couldn't space imagery be used to locate human traffickers? The satellite clicks images of target areas, send them to research analysts and the findings are made public for everyone to see. In 2011, the Satellite Sentinel Project was able to capture the images of grave sites in the Southern Kordofan state of South Sudan. The project is also trying to investigate the source of funding for the illegal trade in diamonds, gold and ivory.
In a speech explaining the whole idea behind SSP, Clooney explained, "Genocide and other human rights crimes are never just spontaneous events. They require planning, they require financing, and they require international indifference to succeed. Where is the money coming from, and where is it being hidden? To the extent we can, we want to make it more difficult for those willing to kill en masse to secure their political and economic objectives, and we want to move the needle away from indifference and inaction." The two NGOS that are the running mill behind this project are ‘Enough Project ‘ and ‘Not On Our Watch' (George is a co-founder of this as well, and other co-founders include Don Cheadle, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.)
The project has gained immense exposure, with many international organisations supporting the cause. However, this stellar project has been openly denounced by Sudanese leaders like Omar al-Bashir, but that is not stopping Clooney from continuing this generous deed. The findings, current research and everything that the project is covering is accessible at the website, Satellite Sentinel Project. Do check it out!
