Amal Clooney to Head Back to Lecture at Columbia Law School spring 2016

Looks like Amal Clooney is looking to spend more time stateside. It was announced today that the lawyer to the imprisoned former Maldives president,Mohamed Nasheed, whose human rights bona fides also include being senior adviser to Kofi Annan, will be teaching this spring. According to the press release, she’ll be lecturing in human rights law (what else?) at Columbia Law School:
Amal Clooney, a London-based barrister specializing in international law and human rights, returns to Morningside Heights this spring to lecture on international human rights law at Columbia Law School. Clooney will lecture in Professor Sarah H. Cleveland’s Human Rights course and speak about human rights litigation strategies to students in the Human Rights Clinic, directed by Professor Sarah Knuckey.
New York really is lovely in the spring. Clooney was previously a visiting faculty member at Columbia, so it isn’t a surprise that she’s decided to go back to the prestigious institution, and they, in turn, are gushing about having the legal superstar back on campus:

“We are privileged to have an international human rights practitioner of Amal Clooney’s stature join us again at Columbia,” said Cleveland, the Louis Henkin Professor of Human and Constitutional Rights and faculty co-director of the Law School’s Human Rights Institute; she also serves as the U.S. independent expert on both the U.N. Human Rights Committee and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. “Professor Clooney’s deep experience advocating before U.N. and regional human rights mechanisms complements our existing offerings and enriches the experience of our students,” Cleveland observed. “She brings invaluable insights to the classroom regarding subjects from international criminal law to free expression, as well as practical challenges in the promotion and protection of human rights.”

Lots of upper-level law school classes have issues with attendance, what with the majority of students at a school like Columbia having already secured full-time jobs after graduation, but bringing in a heavy hitter like Clooney is a surefire way to put asses in seats. But here is the real $100,000 question: what ring will she wear while teaching?

PAN - It's now in the US as well. It sounds to me like "Professor" Clooney will be guest lecturing in Sarah Cleveland's course, so she could show up whenever it's convenient for her for a day or two at a time.

Mm, I saw the Professor bit - can't argue with that, don't know enough about the qualifications........certainly many of her colleagues and friends with the same status and qualifications do the same at different universities....

Ideal I guess if you're diving between Europe and the US West coast........

NB Samantha Barrie CNN social media, friend and attendee at the wedding is currently involved in a journalism course there according to her Twitter account.....

I always thought that you had to actually teach at a particular university and publish in your field to attain tenure before you could become a Professor. I guess if you're a celebrity you can become an honorary professor for bringing attention and money to the school.

I believe teaching isn't necessary and the publications by your name is most important. As a postgraduate student, I've never seen my tutor and professor been in a classroom. Only the vice-professors occasionally teach courses. At least that's the situation here in China.
Amal has wrote more than one book and countless articles on the high-profile publications...which makes it easy to meet some of the qualifications for a professor title I guess.

I think amal is very good in her field therefore they want her there if she was not good celebrity or not she would not be allowed to to teach . Who knows why this person called Amal a professor I think the term was being used loosely we know she is not a professor.

Since she and George build their schedules around each others work, I wonder if George will be here working as well.

Remember when it was discussed here that George had bought a condo in NYC last year. Wonder if that's a fact? I think someone's Twitter account mentioned that George was going to be a neighbor? Who knows.

I think it's terrific that she'll be lecturing at Columbia again. I hope we will get to see George too. Between the two of them they must have very interesting scheduling books.

I would love to see their schedules - I guess they don't use books but their iPhones Wink

If you just think coordinating everything inbetween premieres, red carpets, press work, shootings, Casamigos dates (although I guess that's more Rande's job) on his hand, meetings with clients (Azerbeijan?), office in London, courts, teaching in New York, joining him for events and red carpets, they both meeting with friends, families, vacations. Houses in L.A., Sonning, Cabo, Como, appointments all around the world...

I couldn't deal with that...

Oh, I think their diaries are probably bonkers.

Just think of the number of cases she has - the British government, the Northern Ireland case, stuff at the ECHR, Nasheed, a book to launch, the new journalist's case, Armenia, the Philippines and more I'm sure. Oh, and now Columbia. And Doughty Street now has an international office in the Hague

And that's not to mention all of George's charity work on top of everythng elsei (RTL next week - via NYC maybe?) Maybe he's been in Washington with John Prendergast. Wonder if Cabo has sold............

They're very compatible in that way - used to travelling all over the world.....

Lizzy, I think you could be a "visiting" or "adjunct" professor without jumping through any hoops. Plus she has a doctorate, so I don't see any impediment to her teaching anywhere that wants her.

Well, about the discussion of using the term 'professor':
I guess somebody as Sarah Cleveland, with all her expertise, might know if she should call Amal 'professor'. So I just guess that she used it correctly.

She certainly has a lot on her plate it is great that after marrying George she kept her job and is doing the job she loves. I can understand why George is so proud of her.

I absolutely agree with you. She could easily say: "I'm too busy supporting my husband so I'm concentrating on humanitarian efforts" and nobody would blame her for that...

One thing I would like to add:

Amal has the luxury to decide how much time she wants to spend on her cases, where she wants to work and which cases interest / challenge her.

So of course she's in a very comfortable position, compared to all of us...
And that sometimes causes enviousness (although I'm always astonished when I read comments on Cindy Crawford's Instagram account how positive these comments are, there's hardly anybody jealous of them going on another vacation, staying in the best hotels in wonderful places all around the world, going there by private planes, their beautiful homes etc.).

I don't believe for a minute that Amal is any of those things.

Cindy doesn't have to say anything about amal it's just that simple.

George would never choose a woman like that I believe him and

his friends when they say she is a good person. I will never understand

the need to pit two women against each other. If they didn't like each other they

wouldn't hang out , which Cindy has said they do a lot of at home a way from the prying

eyes of the press.

PP the Instagram comment was about people in general not giving Rande and Cindy grief about their lifestyle. Not about Cindy saying anything about amal or her feelings for her on Instagram.

annemarie -Not arguing with you, but where did Cindy say that they hang out together a lot? She has said nice things about Amal, but I don't remember ever seeing that.

Actually, I think Amal is very secure in her relationship with George as long as they're in her world (ie. in Europe, involved in geopolitics and human rights work.) I think she's much less secure in his world, surrounded by his friends and family. I do think there is some truth to the rumors that she is trying to put some distance between him and his pre-marriage Hollywood crew. Normal for a newlywed, I guess, but she should be careful. These have been his friends for 30 years. If she pushes too hard it could come back and kick her in the ass.

HI Lizzy, Cindy said that in a People interview last year that is where I read it. I don't think she is trying to distance him they all come for the summer. I think the problem is we aren't privy to how often they see his friends or even hers for that matter. And assumptions are made from gossip and not really seeing that much of them.

Amal knows George and how important his friends are to him , I would imagine that is one of the reasons she loves him his loyalty and respect for his friends.

I think if she were so insecure she would be under him like a puppy 24/7.

To me she comes across as a very strong woman she would have to be secure to marry George with all the craziness and women that throw themselves at him.

Thanks, annemarie. I'll check it out when I have a chance. I think you're right. We aren't privy to their private life so we can't assume anything. Whether his friends continue to "come for the summer" will probably depend on whether they spend it in Como or Sonning and how busy they are - and whether Amal wants to be bothered playing hostess for company.

I also agree with PigPen. None of George's friends (no matter how they feel) are going to say anything bad about Amal in public, unless or until George leads the way and sanctions it.

Well, here's a vague list of things we know or have been said along the way.......

Ellen Barkin - Amal takes very good care of George and all his friends.

George in an interview with Kimmel, I think, said none of his friends have been shown the door, he's still 'allowed' to go biking, and nothing much has changed apart from a 'Really?' to the repeated wearing of a certain t-shirt.

Amal herself has said that the easy cases are not what drives her, tho I imagine the difficult ones are a huge amount of work, and all the briefs she has do not include the books - one of which is due for publication this year - various global human rights panels, the UN, British Govt etc.

And I think George thinks her job is much more important.

It was Cindy who said in Ibiza that Casamigos was being launched in London 'because that where George and Amal live now'.

For a very long time George was 'single' and I'm convinced that all his friends are delighted

Oh, and I don't think Amal decides how much she decides to work on her cases. You don't have that luxury. Once you take a case you follow it through to the bitter end however long it takes.

She might one day reduce the number of cases she takes, which is different but I think she's a pretty driven character much like him.

As he has said they are a couple who are interested in the human condition............

I didn't want to say anything negative about Cindy and Rande. What I meant is that I'm a bit astonished that there aren't any - or at least not many (I might have missed a few ones) - envying comments about their lifestyle. I often see negative comments - at least in German - because people compare their own lifestyle with the one they see there and start complaining.

sorry that I misunderstood your post about Cindy's comments. I was in a hurry when I read it so got it wrong.
I agree with you that none of George's friends would say anything negative about Amal, especially when they are asked about her during an interview.

So George's friends speak nice about Amal which leads to two conclusions:
a) They are forced to say nice things about Amal although they hate her because she treats them terribly and is a bitch.
b) They really like Amal and are just happy for George that he found the right person.

We won't find out if a) or b) is right. Concerning that George seems to be a very nice, loyal, polite and generous man (if I doubt that Amal is nice I could doubt this as well) I prefer to believe that he chose a like-minded partner.

If others disagree I'm fine...

George said in an interview that the visits and vacations are planned out, who is coming when that sort of thing. I think now they simply have more visitors with Amals family and friends. I think they also plan out time to be alone , like last years trip when they visited different towns in Italy. So I don't think they have guests every moment of their vacations.

As for the changes George did say nothing much has changed , and we know that the annual boys trips are still on.

Okay, so...

It was a joke. (Fava got it, at least.)

And the 'it's funny 'cause it's true' part is that a woman with Amal's background, education, and training who would not continue to pursue her own professional life to support her husband could be blamed for several things on several levels.

Now, as far as the 'envy' thing goes, I truly hope that is just an observational note, and not a response to my comment/joke. Except for the fact that Amal gets to spend three out of four weeks with a settled-down and mature but still sexy and funny George Clooney, I don't envy a single thing about her. Nor do I think her any more special (intelligent, beautiful, dedicated, whatever) than some women I know personally, who have accomplished so much in their lives without the head start and silver spoon. Except, again, hook up with George Clooney.

And now I'm remembering why I stayed out of the Amal threads...
