LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook Southern California Monday morning.

The tremor struck at 6:25 a.m. and was “epicentered in the Santa Monica Mountains between Westwood and Encino, closer to the Valley side, about five miles below the surface,” Dr. Lucy Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Residents reported feeling the shaking from Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties.

Monday’s tremor was the largest earthquake in Los Angeles since the region stopped having aftershocks from the 1994 Northridge quake, Dr. Jones said.
The quake was initially measured at a 4.7-magnitude, but was downgraded minutes later by the USGS to a 4.4-magnitude.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was in earthquake emergency mode as crews surveyed the city by ground and air, however, there were no reports of any earthquake-related injuries or damage.
Dr. Jones said it was likely that the region would feel aftershocks throughout the day.

Oh boy this is scary.....Hope everyone is ok. Looks like it was a small one but California is always scary when you think about earthquake. Don't they still wait for ages for the big earthquake to come????? Or maybe it was SF....

Ive heard from Lorna and as I suspected, she's like "Earthquake, what Earthquake, didn't feel a thing" Im paraphrasing, but yep as I said - tough cookie.

playful told me it was biggest she'd experienced.
Her building "rolled" from side to side and things fell off the walls !

So the earth moved for her.

Well yes scary, earthquake, because you can´t do a damn thing about them. Hopefully it stays moderate and doesn´t exeed 6 richters magnitude. Then significant damages would be very likely. Can people living in the area follow this somewhere in advance, I don´t know if they can predicted it and for how long?

Meanwhile, the reasons of earthquakes are well understood. Many earthquake warning systems have been installed in almost any area with seismic activities. But till today it is not possible to make a dead-on prediction of area, time and strength of an earthquake for a long time before.

I've experienced several earthquakes in 2008 during that horrible Wenchuan Earthquake. People just slept outdoors on streets, squares,parks, parking lots or playgrounds. That was scary!

Well we just had two more earthquakes tonight. One about an hour and a half ago at 3.6 then followed about an hour later by a 5.3.

I definitely felt the 5.3 News said it was felt over a very wide area of Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

In my area it was just a rolling sensation and the chain on my ceiling fan started swaying.

Chances are only 5% that the 5.3 was a fore shock. The 3.6 must have been that.

Well it's never boring in LA I'll give it that!

Oh and now the police helicopter is flying overhead. Probably checking to see if anything is down.

You know after you live here a while (if you're prepared) it's not too bad.  It's a bit scary while it's happening but once it's over it's just business as usual.  

When it happens whilst at work it can be very funny to see the different reactions from people.  But then again, I have a bit of a warped sense of humor so that helps get through this stuff.

I still find George's description of what happened at his house during the Northridge earthquake pretty hysterical.  Max was still alive.

The stories at the link are pretty funny.  Here's the excerpt about what happened during the earthquake (or at least George's version of it!)

They are smart. Been in one-not fun.

Had a small one in NY last year - scary weird!
