A LESSON IN CHARM FROM CLOONEY

Tuesday 8 April, 2008: The whole of No 10 is in full-on swoons at the visit of George Clooney, who at the start of this year took up a role as a UN ‘messenger of peace’.

He and his colleagues arrive before 9am to meet Gordon and get right down to a discussion about what action can be taken on Darfur, using Gordon’s international contacts and Clooney’s megawatt media power.

I am not trying to be cool, but I am not part of the meeting and so stay in the flat with the boys. Then, I get a call from Gordon’s diary secretary, asking if I will take the boys over to say hello to George.

Of course, Mr Clooney is very charming, and a properly professional famous person. By this, I mean that he has that way of paying attention to everyone who walks into a room, looking to control what happens so that the experience works well, that conversation is good, that he is liked.

It is not a bad thing, it is just noticeable among very famous people, and Mr Clooney seems to be among the best at this
