How to Make Daylight's Clooney Cocktail

How do you capture sunlight in a glass? Tequila’s a great place to start. The spiky leaves of the blue agave have been soaking up Mexican rays for more than a decade, feeding the piña that, when roasted, mashed, fermented and distilled (to condense a centuries-old process down to a sentence), is tequila, ready for aging or not. In Las Vegas, the Light Group favors Casamigos as the company’s official tequila brand.

Owned by actor George Clooney, restaurateur Rande Gerber and partner Mike Meldman, Casamigos wants to be taken seriously, and downplays its founders’ celebrity. The website shows a scruffy Clooney applying the closure to a bottle while an equally casual Gerber looks on. I’m not saying that the guys didn’t get their hands dirty in the process of creating their brand—I once “helped” harvest an agave plant—but awesome as it sounds, I don’t imagine they’re in the fields harvesting piñas or in hairnets working the bottling line between gigs.

What matters is that they have secured great partners who are making equally great tequila. Appropriate to its name, Casamigos is friendly, lovely for sipping, and amiable in delicate cocktails that let it shine. At Daylight Beach Club, the Light Group’s corporate mixologist and San Jose, New Mexico, native Michael Monrreal uses the blanco as the base for The Clooney, a superbly refreshing cooler also made with ruby red grapefruit juice, agave nectar and fresh lime—available by the glass or by the pitcher.

The Clooney
As served at Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay, $17 small, $35 large, $75 pitcher

In a mixing glass, combine 1½ ounces Casamigos blanco tequila, 1 ounce ruby red grapefruit juice, 1 ounce agave nectar and ¾ ounce fresh lime juice. Add ice, cover, shake and strain over fresh ice into a 12-ounce highball glass. Fill with San Pellegrino Pompelmo, give it a little stir and garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Sounds very refreshing, alas I still haven't been able to find out if it is gluten-free.

Well Mazy think you should make a suggestion to the Casamigos team, seems to me if not gluten free, they are missing out of a huge market there.

I never thought about alcohol being gluten free...

Oh and did you see the price of the drink???? How many does a large serve? I don't know if I could even afford the small....

It's pricey per bottle too so I think lots of sipping required so it lasts longer!

Yes in order to receive at church they have to be using wine that is only made in California. My priest and the Bishop had to check it all out for me.

I wouldn't be drinking it much I would just love to taste it, I know they now have a beer that is gluten-free.

I googled it....according to this article good tequila is naturally gluten free. It is only if it is cheaper varieties that might have some...and if they are flavored. Hope this helps:

Question: Is tequila gluten-free?
Answer:
Tequila made in the traditional way entirely from the blue agave plant is naturally gluten-free. However, some cheaper brands of tequila are considered "mixto," or not entirely from the blue agave plant, and these might contain gluten — you'll need to contact the manufacturer to ask.

If the tequila bottle does not state "100% agave," then it's mixto, and contains added sugar and potentially gluten as well.

Realistically, even most cheaper tequilas will not contain gluten. But if you're particularly sensitive to gluten cross-contamination, you may want to stick to the higher quality (and unfortunately more expensive) 100% blue agave tequila — those tequila varieties should be completely gluten-free.

This just lists different types of Alcohol:

Thanks for that link too.
At least champagne & red wine are gluten free.
So, I'll gladly include those in my diet in moderation of course. Very Happy

On another note, I remember a cocktail at Cipriani's named after Clooney.
I wonder if they'll develop a new one now that he launched his own product.

Here it is:

The Drink

The Gabbiano Bar’s Bellinis are famous, of course (and always made with fresh peaches), but guest George Clooney worked with bartender Walter Bolzonella to concoct the Buona Notte. It’s named after Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck and made with cranberry juice, vodka, lime and bitters. Clooney’s handwritten makeshift recipe is on display.

Thanks Juliette, that's definitely one drink I'd like to try, real fan of lemon/lime bitters and the odd tequila of course.
