Filmmaker Gabriel Murray traces the actor’s Kilkenny connections
A new documentary featuring Hollywood A-lister George Clooney’s father and his Irish roots is in the works. Kilkenny born filmmaker and historian Gabriel Murray will travel to Kentucky next month to interview Clooney’s father, Nicholas, in George’s childhood home.
The Belfast Telegraph reports that Murray is excited about the upcoming project with the Clooneys. “Nicholas [George’s father] has agreed to be in the documentary. He is a very positive man," said Murray.
Murray has been working hard going through parish records to dig up more connections about Clooney’s Irish roots. Most recently, Murray discovered a baptismal certificate which verifies that George’s great-great grandfather, also named Nicholas, was born in Tullahought, about 25 miles south of Kilkenny city.
Murray decided to search for the elusive baptismal certificate after Nicholas Clooney searched unsuccessfully through Windgap church for certificates during a separate visit.
Story has it that George Clooney’s great-great-grandfather was evicted from Ireland, though there is a “doubting Thomas mentality” says Murray about the truth in that tale. Many have a hard time believing that he was evicted in 1847 and headed for the States since “he was only worth £2 and two shillings” at the time.
There are still Clooneys related to great-great-grandfather Nicholas Clooney living in Kilkenny, Laois, and Clonmel, who will become part of the documentary. "We will be revealing how closely related they are in the documentary but we can't say too much before the film comes out," said Murray.
Murray hopes to have the film wrapped by April, just in time for George Clooney’s reported motorcycle tour of Ireland.
The Corrigan Brothers are in preparations for the big Clooney visit this spring as well, and have penned a song ‘Welcome Home George Clooney’ for the occasion, which will be included in the documentary. Check out the tune below!
Next Friday, Kilkenny will be hosting a George Clooney lookalike contest, which will also be part of the upcoming documentary.

The Irish premiere of Gabriel Murray’s much anticipated ‘George Clooney’s Irish Roots’ documentary will be held at 7.30pm on Friday in the Greyfriars Art Centre, Waterford. It will open the Waterford Film Festival sponsored by Waterford City Council and Concept Design. Kilkenny man, Gabriel, an award winning director, shines his spotlight on the Irish root’s of one of Hollywood’s greatest stars, George Clooney.
Kilkenny city native, Gabriel began the documentary after he discovered George’s ancestral home in Tullahought village last November. The feature-length documentary was shot in four locations - Kilkenny, Laois, Waterford and Kentucky in the US. Gabriel traces the emigration of George Clooney’s Irish ancestor, Nicholas Clooney, from Kilkenny to Kentucky, during the Irish famine of 1845-50. The film features Fiona Clooney, who made contact with George’s father in 2008, when he came to Ireland in search of his Irish roots, and visited Abbeyleix and Kilkenny. Yvette Hoyle was the producer, ably assisted by executive producers Pat Power (owner of ‘Powers Pub’ in Tullahought village and Michael Watchorn (owner of the ‘Dylan Bar’ in Kilkenny). Andy Ring, of ‘Ring Publishing’ in Abbeyleix, was an associate producer. Director of photography Gary Finnegan shot the doc with David Stokes, and the editing was by Antony Kelly at ‘O’Ceallaigh Post.’
The feature’s a soundtrack’s with contributions from Rosemary Clooney, Finbarr and Roisín Clancy, The Corrigans, Abbeyfolk, Louise Florence, Peter Molly, and The Fenians. Local actor Donie Ryan recites a poem by John Locke.
There are also interviews with relatives of George; historians Joe Kennedy (Callan Historical Society) and the late Dr Walter Walsh; Bono, George Clooney, Donie Butler (Director. McDonagh Junction). Man of letters, Ned Egan, also put in an appearance. The voiceover/narration is by Mike Murphy, one of Ireland’s most respected and best broadcasters.
There is also a showing by Ireland’s most famous Clooney lookalike - David Glendon - who had over one million hits on Google after he won the ‘Lookalike Competition.’ Famous for looking unlike George. Jeremy Kenny makes an appearance as the man that actually look’s like George.
Th story explores the connections with the Clooney family in Ireland, the ‘Titanic connection,’ Sir John Lavery, the Izod Estate, and Captain Patrick Clooney of the1798 Rebellion, A vast canvas of historical research and forgotten history is now brought back into focus. Another fascinating connection was uncovered, indicating that the famous Clancy Brothers were related to George Clooney. The documentary took one year to make and has over 1500 files of old photos, movie clips, presume lost footage and maps.
‘The Gathering’ Website has recently approved the George Clooney Irish Roots Festival in Tullahought to be held 27 July 2013. So it looks like the Clooney clan will be gathering in this beautiful hillside village in South Kilkenny, that has been re named by some locals as Clooney Country.

Fiona Clooney and Gabriel Murray working on the documentry in Morriseys Pub Abbeyleix
Published on Wednesday 30 January 2013 10:56
KILKENNY filmmaker Gabriel Murray will be premiering his documentary ‘George Clooney’s Irish Roots’ at the Dunamaise Arts Centre this Friday February 1 at 8pm.
Filmed on location in Laois, Kilkenny and Waterford, the film traces the emigration of George Clooney’s Irish ancestor Nicholas Clooney, from Kilkenny to Kentucky during the Great Famine of 1847. The documentary also involved an intensive search for George’s Irish links, as well as the discovery of his ancestral home.
Narrated by Mike Murphy, one of Ireland’s best renowned television presenters, the film includes interviews with George Clooney and Bono as well as local historians; Professor Walter Walsh, Joseph Kennedy, Mary Egan and Ned Egan.
The documentary focuses on Fiona Clooney from Abbeyleix and her search for her connection with the Kentucky Clooneys. Fiona originally made the initial contact with George’s father Nicholas in 2008, when he came to Ireland in search of his Irish roots. He was inspired to make this visit, because of letters from the 1930’s, between Fiona’s Gran-aunt Sarah Clooney and Rosemary Clooney.
Speaking to the Leinster Express, Fiona said that the year long experience was brilliant.
“It was really interesting and I met some lovely people. We also found that we had a Titanic connection - my great great grand aunt Sarah Clooney worked in the carpet factory in Abbeyleix which supplied the carpets for the Titanic. I didn’t know a lot of the stories before doing this”, she said.
Fiona said that she is nervous and excited about showing the premiere this weekend and is hoping for a big crowd to turn out on the night.
She also intends to send George Clooney’s parents a copy of the film in the coming months, as she is been regularly in touch with them to keep them updated on the story’s progress.
The documentary which was produced by Michael Watchorn, Pat Power and Andy Ring, contains several soundtracks featuring contributions from Rosemary Clooney, Finbarr and Roisín Clancy, The Corrigans, Abbeyfolk, Louise Florence, Peter Molly and The Fenians. Kilkenny actor Donie Ryan recites Dawn of the Irish Coast by John Locke and Director of McDonagh Junction, Donie Butler also explains the discovery of unmarked famine graves, where some of the Clooneys perished.
To add to the vast collection of research on the film, the director also includes material on Ireland’s most famous Clooney lookalikes Jeremy Kenny and David Glendon, the latter who received over one million hits on Google after he won a ‘George Clooney Lookalike Competition’.
In this documentary, an array of historical research and forgotten history has been uncovered featuring over 1500 files of video clips, maps and archives that have been lost for generations and link George Clooney to his lost ancestors. A sub-section in the story explores the Clooney family’s links with the Titanic, the Izod Estate and Captain Patrick Clooney, prominent in the 1798 Rebellion.
Tickets are priced at €10 and are available from the Dunamaise Arts Centre Box Office at 057 86 63355 or at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Obama who? Now George O'Clooney is our favourite long-lost son. . .
Saturday February 02 2013
Deirdre Reynolds
In The Descendants, George Clooney follows his family tree back to the Hawaiian island of Kauai. In reality, it turns out that Gorgeous George is from Kilkenny.
A new Irish documentary has traced the Hollywood star's ancestry back five generations to Tullahought.
But the Oscar-winning actor reveals how he's always felt like a Cat.
"Our family is very Irish still – Irish Catholics," says Clooney (51). "[I'm] an 'O'Clooney'!"
"I've only been there a couple of times, which is the funniest thing to me. I should spend much more time there."
In George Clooney's Irish Roots: The Real Descendants, which premiered at Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise last night, it emerges that George's great-great-grandfather Nicholas Clooney emigrated from Kilkenny to Kentucky during the Great Famine of 1847.
Now it's hoped that the star will return to his ancestral home during a George Clooney Irish Roots Festival, being held as part of The Gathering this July.
"I swam here the whole way," jokes the actor, who grew up in Maysville. "My family's really funny about that, you know – very, very proud. I had grandparents who [were] still mad at the English – it's that kind of deep-seated thing."
The Clooney connection first hit headlines when filmmaker Gabriel Murray discovered Nicholas Clooney's baptism certificate in October 2011.
And the director – who was also behind documentary Obama's Irish Roots – spent the past year painstakingly piecing together Clooney's 300-year Irish history.
"Most women would probably love to spend 14 months studying George Clooney, but it was a huge challenge," laughs Gabriel.
"George's dad Nick actually came over here in 2008 searching for the ancestral home, but couldn't find it.
"After learning a lot about genealogy on Obama's Irish Roots, I decided to have a go.
"First, I found Nicholas Clooney's baptism cert from 1829 and bought a copy for €3. From there, I was able to pinpoint exactly where the house was."
Featuring never-before-seen family snaps and documents, the documentary also reveals how Clooney could be related to everyone from Lord Byron to The Clancy Brothers.
"George knows all about this stuff," says filmmaker Murray. "The link to Lord Byron could even be where he gets his good looks.
"I'm meeting George at a screening of the documentary at the Berlin Film Festival next week – hopefully it will encourage him to come over and explore his roots.
"I've also been asked to present him with an invite from the Lord Mayor of Kilkenny, Sean O'Hargain, to accept the Freedom of the City.
"I'm sure the women of Ireland would love to see him over. Although, the men mightn't be too happy!
"I'm amazed at the interest in this guy – there seems to be even more interest in him than there was in Obama. He could run for president."
Murray adds: "Already, they're calling it 'Clooney Country. It's not a bad thing for rural Ireland."
Sure enough, locals are hoping the claim to fame will help do for Tullahought what the Obama bond did for Moneygall.
Current owner of Clooney's ancestral home, farmer Peter Purcell recalls: "Some years ago, a person drove in the farmyard while [I] was working and asked me about George Clooney.
"It's great for the area. It will be great really for everybody in the community, so long may it continue."
But if Gorgeous George isn't available for The Gathering festival, Dublin lookalike Jeremy Kenny says he's happy to take his place.
"I'll happily step in for George if he can't make it," says Tolltreats.com director Jeremy, who's also investigating a lead that he could be related to the actor. "It would be an honour.
"Over the years, I've been mistaken for George hundreds of times," adds dad-of-three Jeremy.
"It would be great to finally meet him in person.
"And if he ever needs anyone to look after his pad on Lake Como, too, I'm sure I could move my diary around!"
