I'll give credit to Daily Mail on this one. It was wonderful hearing Nick gush over his grandchildren.
George does have a really nice nose. So that's a plus.

That's not their interview, click into the link they're just quoting FOX 19 on a phone interview. Nick sounds so excited.

Nick and Nina met their grandchildren via Skype? How sad. Grandpa Daddy should have flown them in. Shameful, me thinks.

Do you think that bit is true, 11,000 dollars a night!!!....And they booked it for a week...
All babies are adored....all Mothers are amazing.....Let's remember the real world is still out there and watching....
Birth and death are the great equalisers....Everybody feels the joy of a birth....try not to give the babies a calling card they don't need and never asked for.....Try not to separate them or differentiate them from all the other beautiful babies born this week......Let them breath for awhile, give them air and cuddles and loving Mum and gentle Dad.....Leave SuperWoman to the movies as that's where the world his wife and their baby expect to find her.....

Smitten Grandpa Nick Clooney Says George and Amal’s Twins Are ‘Perfect, Picture-Postcard Babies’
BY ELIZABETH LEONARD•@LIZZLEONARD1
POSTED ON JUNE 8, 2017 AT 7:49AM EDT
When George and Amal Clooney introduced newborns Ella and Alexander to their paternal grandparents on Tuesday, via Skype, George’s dad Nick was immediately wowed.
“What I saw were these two perfect, picture-postcard babies,” Nick Clooney tells PEOPLE from his home in Kentucky. “They were two great-looking babies!”
The stars welcomed their new little ones earlier this week, with a spokesman for the couple saying in a statement: “Ella, Alexander and Amal, 39, are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George, 56, is sedated and should recover in a few days.”
As Amal, who Nick describes as “remarkable,” held the twins in her arms while sitting up in her hospital bed, the new parents proudly shared sweet moments with Nick and Nina, and George’s older sister Adelia, who lives nearby.
“Amal looked great. George looked more harried than she did,” says Nick, who adds that the newborns are “stunning”, with dark hair and lots of energy. “They were both very active!”
Although the couple didn’t reveal the twins’ names to the family until after they were born, Nick said he loves the choice. “We didn’t know until [meeting] the babies, but they’re beautiful names, aren’t they?”
Until the elder Clooneys see the little ones in person, Nick said he is simply thrilled by their first meeting. In fact, he tells PEOPLE, “It was perfect.”
Sources confirmed in February that the Oscar-winning actor-director and the international human-rights lawyer were expecting. George, Amal and their families were “all very happy,” a source said at the time.

WWHS, yes, I do think it's true that it would cost about £8500 a day. And the NHS benefit
Crikey, in somewhere like the US state of Alaska it costs $40,000 for one birth and that's only if it's uncomplicated. A caesarian? Add another 20,000. And that's without the luxury of others staying etc

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
The price probably correct, this was not a regular hospital room this was designed for the rich. Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles has a special wing for wealthy parents and from what I have read it costs just as much if not more.
Celebs and the wealthy aren't sharing a room with strangers and want their births to be private with all the luxuries they are used to having.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
Though I think it seems excessive to most of us I don't think they're paying for luxury so much as for a guarantee of privacy and security. Can you imagine the circus if a celebrity of Amal's status gave birth in a regular maternity ward? Photos of the birth would probably show up in the media before the delivery was even done!
PAN - Where did you hear it costs $40,000 to have a baby in Alaska?! I can't believe that's the standard fee for childbirth there. It has to be the cost of an exceptionally difficult birth or of meeting the demands of an extremely over-privileged mom.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
I still think it's possible she delivered without cesarean.
My mom had to rest and suffered for a few days after the cesarean surgery and wasn't allowed to hold me until a week later.
Amal seems to have been fine and conscious enough two hours later to do a Skype conversation, with holding two babies around her arms!
It sounds like a pretty normal and smooth delivery to me. Good for her.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
And she seems to have sat up in bed with the babies in her arms, I wasn't able to sit up after my cesarean so I guess you're right, Sevens. It sounds like an easy and smooth delivery.
About the costs: Since I have a private health insurance, I saw the bill of my hospital stay and cesarean in 2001. The cesarean was about $8,000. A day in a two-bedroom cost more than $1,000, both would be probably be more expensive now, nearly 16 years later. And my roommate was a depressive, neurotic woman of about 60 who was crying and chatting nonstop, being visited by her husband and three sons plus neighbors and friends constantly between 7 a.m. and 22 p.m. while I tried to recover from my cesarean, not to worry too much about my twins' lives and health and tried to start breast-pumping. I'd given anything for a single room... I was so fed up that I left the hospital earlier than recommended by the doctors.
By the way: I remember the bill for the first two months of my twins' intensive care which was about $250,000 - each!

So glad that it seems Amal had a normal labor and delivery. I'm guessing that there were no issues with the babies' weights or underdeveloped lungs. And if Amal didn't have a C section would she be able to go home by this weekend?

Donnamarie, I've seen a lot of women get home two or three days after the labor. Amal won't want to stay in hospital for any longer...supposing that they had moved there in advance.

The days of staying in hospital for a long time are well and truly over. In the NHS (which George and Amal didn't use), they'll see if the mother can go home the day of giving birth. After a caesarian, then three to four days after.

Lizzy, I heard about the cost of having a baby in Alaska from a Town Hall meeting for its senator/congressman on Youtube. A woman who worked in healthcare there asked the guy running the state if he had any idea of cost!

Katie, it's at most 1-2 days stay in U.S. hospitals for normal births. But I didn't know the standard stay for C section births. So can we assume that the Clooney family is at home now?
I could imagine almost everything costs much more in Alaska ... except possibly fish :/

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
Okay, I can understand and overlook a little hyperbole on the part of wonderstruck grandparents, but, you know, enough with the "great parents" and "Superwoman/mom" stuff. The babies are less than a week old, and there's nothing super about feeding and changing them and making sure they're warm. Amal gets to take six months off work, if the mags are to be believed, and then she will be able to largely work from home. A very large, elegant, and well-staffed home. George sets his own schedule. If either of them ever has to parent without the other, and get up at 5am to take public transportation to a day care and then make it to a job by 7am, and does that five days out of seven for years, and manages to raise healthy, happy children, then, yeah, let's give them their due. But arranging a Skype visit from a private high-end delivery suite doesn't begin to qualify for superlatives.
And, no, I'm not sour or negative, and I'm happy George is thrilled to be a father and most of all that the babies are healthy. But good grief, some of this hype is ridiculous.

Hey, Katie, my second granddaughter was born in the soothing warm water of a suite in a birthing center, attended by a midwife and a doula, and was home before she was six hours old.

PAN - This has been bugging me since you posted it but I didn't have time to google it until now. According to a study done for the March of Dimes the average cost for hospital deliveries in the US is $3,500 per stay for an uncomplicated birth. With pre-natal and post partum care the cost can rise to $8,802. Of course costs can go much higher if there are complications with the pregnancy or the birth.party animal - not! wrote:WWHS, yes, I do think it's true that it would cost about £8500 a day. I'm sure location and other factors affect the cost, but $40,000 to $60,000 sounds like the kind of luxury option only the 1%-ers would choose.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
Hat's off to America's Micheal Flatley...The Lord of The Dance had his one and only son delivered in the local Maternity hospital, here in Ireland (there are swanky Dublin Hospitals too)....After the event the new father donated a six figure sum....and also paid for a Tranquility and Contemplation garden to be built in the Hospital Atrium (that had been a rather bland area)....A fabulous and much used addition......
He went on the sell pictures to Hello and donate that money also to the Maternity unit....ten years later he will drop everything if he is needed......
I always thought of him as a showboater....but in fact he is anything but....
BTW....his son attended the local Christian Brothers School....No crap....RESPECT....
YOU GOT TO ADMIT THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT.....XXX
BTW...They do allow you to bring your own bottle of bubbly in on the QT, as long as you take your dirty glasses home....

I thought I'd get lambasted for my comment.
I got home from a volunteer day care shift at a women's center, where the common story is a single-mom family working two jobs and maybe going to school, and ran across a headline 'Amal is Already a Magnificent Mom,' and it really hit me.

Just to follow-up on this discussion I was reading a NYT article from 2013 about the cost of maternity care. It stated that on average back then vaginal births ran about $30,000 and C Sections upwards of $40,000. If a woman is covered by insurance her out-of-pocket expenses run around $3,400. Huge difference. The current outcry by so many Americans about repealing the Affordable Care Act goes to the huge dilemma of how many women currently covered would possibly lose their coverage and have to pay out these enormous fees.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
Not by me, anyway. Was thinking something along the same lines. I know Nick lays it on thick normally anyway (remember he called his grandson Nick something like 'the world's only grandchild' in a tongue in cheek way to acknowledge how biased grandparents are towards their own) but still, the whole 'superwoman' thing is a bit too hollywood for my liking.Way2Old4Dis wrote:I thought I'd get lambasted for my comment.
I've no reason to think she wouldn't be a great mum (and George a great dad, for that matter) but given their privilege and help they can get, I don't think they should be collecting awards for good parenting just yet.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
IMO we won't know what kind of parents G&A are until the twins are grown and out in the world. When we see what kind of people the twins turn out to be we'll have a better idea what kind of parents they were. I think, though, like everything else with George, we'll never really know for sure - how much will be their influence and how much will come from the other people around them? G&A may try to keep the twins "normal" but they may end up spoiled or entitled anyway, despite their parents' best efforts.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
For me it's obvious that grandparents aren't impartial, I hear it so often when my parents' friends talk about their own grandparents. They always are the most beautuful, intelligent and athletic kids ever (and when I look at them, talk to them and see them playing soccer etc., I usually think "Well, your grandparents must talk about another child then".
When my kids were small and I talked to other mothers, it was the same. Their kids were six months old when they slept the night through, gained weight as if it was an olympic discipline, walked at eight months and didn't need diapers anymore at 18 months. When I watched the kids, they actually looked like any other kid, and when I see them now, there's nothing to be seen which tells me he/she's an olympic champion-to-be ot Nobel Prize winner-to-be.
For George and Amal's twins the most challenging part will be to fulfill the high expectations many people will have. Of course they have to be beautiful and very intelligent kids, so George and Amal's job will be to strenghten their self confidence, telling them that they are great and loved the way they are, not the way tgey are suppised to be.

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
To be honest, if Amal had a natural birth and is now breast feeding the babies, given the privileged life that they have, to some that would be pretty amazing.
I would not be surprised to hear that that's the case. I think she's probably a really down to-earth type and we know that she's got a great sense of humour.
And I suspect George is being incredibly protective and no doubt quite emotional...given that they planned the wedding and the house together and all the work they've done together too, I reckon that's how it is.
Could be completely wrong of course!

Re: Nick and Nina met the twins over Skype
I'm sure it's a really emotional time for George and Amal. Being new parents always is. There's a big learning curve for both of them but I think they will be just fine. Lots of ups and downs to experience.
The grandparents' comments about the babies' births last week was just what you expect from grandparents. They are over the moon about the births and I think it's totally normal and lovely IMO. I wouldn't expect anything less. And I'm sure that George will also say many times what a wonderful and amazing mom Amal is ... when he is asked.

I think they will be good parent's and the kids will be well mannered and expected to give back in life.
I do think there will be some spoiling but I don't see them being entitled I don't think George or Amal would allow that.
george and Amal seem to know very normal down to earth people and I would expect the children's friends to be the same.

Yep, I'm sure that's going to become part of his standard repertoire - alongside jokey stories of how bad he is at parenting.Donnamarie wrote: And I'm sure that George will also say many times what a wonderful and amazing mom Amal is ... when he is asked.
He has to say that: even if he thought Amal was the worst mother in the world (and I'm sure she won't be), in public he can't say anything other than how great she is. He'll make fun of himself though, so hopefully that'll lighten up the stories a bit.
